Higher Body Mass Index Increases Risk of HeartMate II Pump Thrombosis But Does Not Adversely Affect Long-Term Survival.
CONCLUSIONS: Higher BMI does not reduce survival after VAD implantation but it does appear to increase the risk of pump thrombosis. Further studies to characterize the role of BMI in survival and thrombosis rates are warranted. PMID: 28003575 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clinical Outcomes and Bioprosthetic Valve Function After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation Under Dual Antiplatelet Therapy vs. Aspirin Alone.
CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with aspirin alone after TAVI had greater safety benefits and was associated with similar valve function as DAPT. These results suggest that treatment with aspirin alone is an acceptable regimen for TAVI patients. PMID: 28123149 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Left Atrial Appendage Thrombi Formation in Japanese Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation Patients During Anticoagulation Therapy - Warfarin vs. Direct Oral Anticoagulants.
CONCLUSIONS: LAA thrombi were found in 2.7% of Japanese NVAF patients scheduled for procedures despite ongoing oral anticoagulation therapy. Incidence of thrombi was similar for patients on DOAC and on warfarin. PMID: 28179613 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Ad hoc vs. Non-ad hoc Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Strategies in Patients With Stable Coronary Artery Disease.
CONCLUSIONS: Ad hoc PCI in stable CAD patients was associated with at least comparable 5-year clinical outcomes as with non-ad hoc PCI. Considering patients' preference and the cost-saving, the ad hoc PCI strategy might be a safe and attractive option for patients with stable CAD, although the prevalence of ad hoc PCI was low in the current study population. Association of Kidney Dysfunction With Asymptomatic Cerebrovascular Abnormalities in a Japanese Population With Health Checkups.
CONCLUSIONS: Decreased eGFR and proteinuria were independent risk factors for asymptomatic abnormalities on carotid US and brain MRI, which are surrogate markers for cerebrovascular diseases. Evaluation of these abnormalities may be useful for prevention of symptomatic cerebrovascular events in CKD patients. PMID: 28420817 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Assessment of Left Ventricular Function and Mass on Free-Breathing Compressed Sensing Real-Time Cine Imaging.
CONCLUSIONS: Despite underestimation of LV mass, FB CS cine MRI is a clinically useful alternative to BH standard cine MRI in patients with impaired BH capacity. PMID: 28515392 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effect of Anemia on Cardiovascular Hemodynamics, Therapeutic Strategy and Clinical Outcomes in Patients With Heart Failure and Hemodynamic Congestion.
CONCLUSIONS: Anemia had a direct effect on cardiovascular hemodynamics and thus can confound therapeutic planning in HF patients with HC. The novel hemodynamic subsets can be applied in daily clinical practice regardless of the presence or absence of anemia. PMID: 28626160 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Significant Prognostic Value of Acute Preload Stress Echocardiography Using Leg-Positive Pressure Maneuver for Patients With Symptomatic Severe Aortic Stenosis Awaiting Aortic Valve Intervention.
CONCLUSIONS: Assessment of preload reserve during LPP stress could facilitate risk stratification of patients with severe AS waiting for aortic valve intervention. PMID: 28659550 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clinical Significance of Pulmonary Arterial Capacitance Calculated by Echocardiography in Patients With Advanced Heart Failure.
CONCLUSIONS: Decreased PAC as measured by echocardiography, indicating elevated PAWP and RV dysfunction, predicted poorer outcomes in patients with advanced HF. PMID: 28679970 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clinical Features and Gaps in the Management of Probable Familial Hypercholesterolemia and Cardiovascular Disease.
CONCLUSIONS: Main manifestations of ASCVD in FH patients were premature, multivessel CAD with need for recurrent revascularization, associated with classical cardiovascular risk factors but not with peak LDL-C. In spite of intensive therapy with lipid-lowering agents, treatment gaps were significant, with low attainment of LDL-C treatment goals. PMID: 28701632 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Aging Modulates the Substrate and Triggers Remodeling in Atrial Fibrillation.
Abstract Aging plays a critical role in the genesis of atrial fibrillation (AF) and also increases the risks of cardiac dysfunction and stroke in AF patients. AF is caused by increased AF triggering from abnormalities of the thoracic vein and/or modulated substrate (atrial) with enhancement of AF maintenance. Clinical and laboratory evidence indicates that aging is significant in the creation of atrial electrical and structural remodeling that leads to increased susceptibility to AF occurrence. Aging is commonly associated with cardiovascular comorbidities, oxidative stress, calcium dysregulation, atrial myopathy ...

Clinical Characteristics and Long-Term Outcomes of Rotational Atherectomy - J2T Multicenter Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: This study has provided the largest Japanese dataset for long-term follow-up of RA. Although RA in calcified lesions appears feasible with a high rate of procedural success, a high incidence of MACE was observed. PMID: 28931790 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Cardiovascular and Bleeding Risks in Acute Myocardial Infarction Newly Treated With Ticagrelor vs. Clopidogrel in Taiwan.
CONCLUSIONS: In real-world AMI Taiwanese patients, ticagrelor seemed to offer better anti-ischemic protection than clopidogrel, without an increase in the rate of major bleeding. A large-scale randomized trial is needed to assess the efficacy and safety of ticagrelor in East Asian AMI patients. PMID: 29081474 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
