Calycosin-7-O- β-D-glucoside reduces myocardial injury in heat stroke rats.
CONCLUSION: We thus conclude that myocardial injury can be a pressing need for the design of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for heat stroke. In particular, our data indicate that CG protects against heat stroke in rats by mitigating myocardial injury. PMID: 30245143 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Adipose tissue derived stromal vascular fraction as an adjuvant therapy in stroke rehabilitation: Case reports
Introduction: Stroke often causes residual hemiparesis, and upper extremity motor impairment is usually more disabling than lower extremity in those who are suffering from post-stroke hemiparesis. Cell therapy is one of the promising therapies to reduce post-stroke disability. Patient concerns: Three male participants were included in the study to investigate the feasibility and tolerability of autologous adipose tissue derived stromal vascular fraction. Diagnosis: All participants had hemiparesis after 1st-ever stroke longer than 6 months previously. Interventions: Under general anesthesia, liposuction of abdom...

Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on a Regional Stroke Thrombectomy Service in the United Kingdom
Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on the stroke admission numbers but not stroke thrombectomy rate, successful recanalization rate, or early neurological outcome. Internal delays actually improved during the COVID-19 pandemic. Further studies should examine the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on longer term outcome.Cerebrovasc Dis

Sedation Mode During Endovascular Stroke Treatment in the Posterior Circulation —Is Conscious Sedation for Eligible Patients Feasible?
Conclusions: In this retrospective study, EST of the posterior circulation under conscious sedation was for eligible patients comparably safe and effective to patients treated under general anesthesia.

Conscious Sedation versus General Anesthesia during Endovascular Acute Ischemic Stroke Treatment: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis EVIDENCE-BASED MEDICINE LEVEL 1
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with acute ischemic stroke undergoing intra-arterial therapy may have worse outcomes with general anesthesia compared with conscious sedation. However, the difference in stroke severity at the onset may confound the comparison in the available studies; thus, a randomized trial is necessary to confirm this association.

Proprioceptive illusion induced by tendon vibration on the upper limb in stroke patients
Conclusion TVR and usual movement illusion under tendon vibration are affected on the hemiplegic side after stroke. Any relationship or not on the observed deficiencies require confirmation with a larger sample.

Risk Factors For Stroke, Myocardial Infarction, or Death Following Carotid Endarterectomy: Results From the International Carotid Stenting Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Increasing diastolic blood pressure was the only independent risk factor for stroke, MI, or death following CEA. Cautious attention to blood pressure control following symptoms attributable to carotid stenosis could reduce the risks associated with subsequent CEA. Outcome Predictors After Successful Intra-Arterial Therapy for Acute Ischemic Stroke (P1.195)
Conclusion: Age, NIHSS score, use of stent retrievers, mode of anesthesia, and symptomatic ICH might affect functional outcome in stroke patients who achieve successful recanalization via intra-arterial therapy. Prospective studies, or a meta-analysis of sub-groups in the recently published prospective trials are needed to confirm the association between those factors, or others, and functional outcome.Disclosure: Dr. Noufal has nothing to disclose. Neuroimaging as a Selection Tool and Endpoint in Clinical and Pre-clinical Trials
AbstractStandard imaging in acute stroke enables the exclusion of non-stroke structural CNS lesions and cerebral haemorrhage from clinical and pre-clinical ischaemic stroke trials. In this review, the potential benefit of imaging (e.g., angiography and penumbral imaging) as a translational tool for trial recruitment and the use of imaging endpoints are discussed for both clinical and pre-clinical stroke research. The addition of advanced imaging to identify a “responder” population leads to reduced sample size for any given effect size in phase 2 trials and is a potentially cost-efficient means of testing interventions...

Isoflurane preconditioning inhibits the effects of tissue-type plasminogen activator on brain endothelial cell in an in vitro model of ischemic stroke.
In this study, we used oxygen/glucose deprivation and reperfusion (OGD/R) condition to mimic an ischemic stroke in vitro. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) activity was measured in endothelial cell media. Also, neuronal cell culture was performed to investigate the effect of pretreated isoflurane on the neuronal cell survival after tPA-induced injury during OGD/R. Isoflurane pretreatment prevented tPA-induced MMP-2 and MMP-9 activity and suppressed tPA-triggered LRP/NF-κB/Cox-2 signaling after OGD/R. Neuronal cells, incubated with endothelial cell conditioned medium (EC-CM) after tPA + OGD/R, showed upregulation of pro-apop...

Interpretation of Brain CT Scans in the Field by Critical Care Physicians in a Mobile Stroke Unit
CONCLUSIONThis pilot study shows that anesthesiologists trained in prehospital critical care may effectively assess cerebral CT scans in an MSU, and determine if there are radiological contraindications for thrombolysis.

Anaesthesia for Endovascular Treatment of Acute Ischemic Stroke: Still Controversial?
This article reviews recent research on anaesthetic management of acute ischemic stroke revascularization. With emphasis on the effect of anaesthesia type on outcome, we will discuss controversial discoveries and future perspectives.Recent FindingsA substantial number of retrospective observational studies have suggested that general anaesthesia (GA) compared to conscious sedation (CS) is associated with worse outcomes after endovascular therapy for acute ischemic stroke. In contrast, recent randomized trials reported no difference in outcomes in ischemic stroke patients receiving either GA or CS during revascularization w...

Behavior of stroke volume variation in hemodynamic stable patients during thoracic surgery with one-lung ventilation periods
ConclusionThe decrease of stroke volume variation values during one-lung ventilation with protective ventilatory strategies advices not to use the same threshold values to determine fluid responsiveness.
