Stroke Prevention with Hydroxyurea Enabled through Research and Education (SPHERE): a Phase 2 primary stroke prevention trial in sub-Saharan Africa
CONCLUSION: SPHERE has built local capacity with high-quality research infrastructure and TCD screening for SCA in Tanzania. Fully enrolled, participants have a high prevalence of elevated baseline TCD velocities and splenomegaly. SPHERE will prospectively determine the benefits of hydroxyurea at MTD for primary stroke prevention, anticipating expanded access to hydroxyurea treatment across Tanzania.PMID:35977532 | DOI:10.1159/000526322

Prevalence, Incidence and Associated Risk Factors of Stroke in Older Adults in Havana and Matanzas Provinces, Cuba (P03.152)
CONCLUSIONS: Prevalence and incidence of stroke in this study is similar to that reported for Europe and North America, and higher than that observed in other Latin American countries. The risk profile identified includes classic risk factors plus anemia and APOE 4 genotype.Disclosure: Dr. Lombardi has nothing to disclose. Dr. Valhuerdy has nothing to disclose. Pain and other non‐neurological adverse events in children with sickle cell anemia and previous stroke who received hydroxyurea and phlebotomy or chronic transfusions and chelation: Results from the SWiTCH clinical trial
Conclusions: In children with SCA and prior stroke, monthly transfusions and daily iron chelation provided superior protection against acute vaso‐occlusive pain SAEs when compared to hydroxyurea and monthly phlebotomy.

Reticulocytosis and anemia are associated with an increased risk of death and stroke in the newborn cohort of the Cooperative Study of Sickle Cell Disease
Abstract Prior analyses of the Cooperative Study of Sickle Cell Disease (CSSCD) newborn cohort identified elevated white blood cell (WBC) count, low baseline hemoglobin and dactylitis between the age 1 and 2 years as markers of severe disease. Reticulocytosis was also associated with severe disease. Here we further analyzed data collected on enrolled CSSCD infants for the predictive value of those markers for stroke and death later in life. Three hundred fifty‐four CSSCD subjects were identified who had absolute reticulocyte counts (ARC) measured during infancy (2 to 6 months of age). Infants with higher ARC had signific...

Prognostic Value of Serum N-Terminal Pro-Brain Natriuretic Peptide Level over Heart Failure for Stroke Events and Deaths in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation.
Authors: Kuronuma K, Okumura Y, Morikawa T, Yokoyama K, Matsumoto N, Tachibana E, Oiwa K, Matsumoto M, Kojima T, Haruta H, Nomoto K, Sonoda K, Arima K, Kogawa R, Takahashi F, Kotani T, Ohkubo K, Fukushima S, Itou S, Kondo K, Chiku M, Ohno Y, Onikura M, Hirayama A, SAKURA AF Registry Investigators Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF) often coexist. The aims of this study were to explore the factors associated with the serum levels of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), and the association between prognosis and a history of HF or the serum NT-proBNP level in Japanese patients wit...

Renal safety evaluation of aspirin plus edaravone in patients with ischaemic stroke: a retrospective cohort study
Conclusions Our study indicated that edaravone in patients with ischaemic stroke didn’t increase the nephrotoxicity of aspirin, and even had a protective effect on mild renal deterioration. Nevertheless, there is a need to be cautious when patients are in bad pathophysiological conditions and at high risk of bleeding.

Moyamoya syndrome and stroke among pediatric sickle cell disease patients in Sudan: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Stroke is a common problem in Sudanese pediatric patients with sickle cell disease, with a very high frequency of Moyamoya vasculopathy among patients with stroke presentation. The burden of Moyamoya syndrome in Sudanese pediatric patients with sickle cell disease is underestimated due to the cost of the available screening and diagnostic tools.PMID:35734737 | PMC:PMC9206931 | DOI:10.1016/j.amsu.2022.103815

Safety Signal Evaluation of a Risk of Syncope and Dizziness Not Related to Bleeding or Stroke in Direct Oral Anticoagulant-Treated Patients
Clin Ther. 2023 Jan 16:S0149-2918(22)00416-7. doi: 10.1016/j.clinthera.2022.12.010. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPURPOSE: In clinical studies, rivaroxaban treatment has been associated with increased incidence of syncope not related to bleeding, anemia, or stroke. The study objective was to evaluate the occurrence of dizziness and/or syncope not related to bleeding, anemia, or stroke in patients treated with direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs).METHODS: A retrospective, observational, comparative study of adult patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and treated with DOACs was conducted using digital retrieval of medica...

The impact of low hemoglobin levels and transfusion on critical care patients with severe ischemic stroke: STroke: RelevAnt Impact of HemoGlobin, Hematocrit and Transfusion (STRAIGHT)—an observational study
Abstract: Purpose: Optimal management of hemoglobin (Hb) and red blood cell transfusion (RBCT) in neurologic intensive care unit (NICU) patients has not been determined yet. Here we aimed to investigate the impact of anemia and transfusion activity in patients who had acute ischemic stroke.Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis of clinical, laboratory, and outcome data of patients with severe acute ischemic stroke treated on our NICU between 2004 and 2011 was performed. Results: Of 109 patients, 97.2% developed anemia and 33% received RBCT. Significant correlations were found between NICU length of stay (NICU LOS) ...

Protective Effects of Spatholobi Caulis Extract on Neuronal Damage and Focal Ischemic Stroke/Reperfusion Injury
AbstractNeuronal apoptotic cell death plays an important role in many neurological disorders, including Alzheimer ’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and ischemic stroke. Spatholobi Caulis (SC) has been widely used in traditional herbal medicine for the treatment of cancer, inflammation, viral infection, and anemia. However, the protective effects of SC extract (SCE) against apoptotic cell death in the brain h ave not been reported. We investigated the protective effects of SCE against neuronal injury etoposide-induced neurotoxicity and in rats subjected to focal transient ischemic stroke middle cerebral artery occlusion ...
