Risk factors, vascular lesion distribution, outcome and recurrence of strokes due to intracranial atherosclerosis: One year data from Hyderabad stroke registry
Conclusion: Risk factors, distribution of vascular lesions and high recurrence of stroke due to ICAS in this study is similar to that reported from other Asian countries. Aggressive medical management and risk factor control remains the best strategy for preventing recurrence.

“His Entire Body Was Shutting Down”: New State Rankings Show Gaps in High School Athlete Safety
By mid-afternoon on August 1, 2017, the temperature in Stockton, Calif. was at least 105 degrees. Thirteen-year-old Jayden Galbert complained to his mother, Shynelle Jones, about the heat, but didn’t want to skip preseason football practice and hurt his chances of making the freshman football team. Instead, he showed up, pushed himself to participate, and then collapsed on the field. “He started vomiting and he was shaking,” Jones says. “He couldn’t see. He was trying to focus, but he couldn’t.” Jayden was eventually airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center, where he was diagnosed with...

Even 1 Alcoholic Drink A Day Can Raise Stroke Risk, Study Says
This study uses a novel genetic approach to try to determine the effect of alcohol consumption on risk of cardiovascular disease,” said Tim Chico, professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Sheffield. “Although it has previously been suggested moderate alcohol intake may reduce risk of stroke or heart disease, this new study adds to recent evidence that finds no protective effect even at low levels of intake,” he added. “Sadly the hope that alcohol somehow protects against cardiovascular disease is probably unfounded.” David Spiegelhalter, a professor for the public understandin...

Association Between Levels of Serum Insulin-like Growth Factor I and Functional Recovery, Mortality, and Recurrent Stroke at a 7-year Follow-up
Conclusion The association for s-IGF-I with long-term post-stroke recovery persists after 7 years, which is also reflected in the mRS score distributions at all time-points. The effects are however modest, and not driven by mortality or recurrent stroke. Propensity of stroke in standard versus various aortic arch variants: A 200 patients study
Conclusions: Standard aortic arch Type 2, bovine aortic arch Type A, and Type B are associated with an early age at stroke presentation. During routine carotid evaluation by CT or MR angiography in stroke patients, it would be better to evaluate the aortic arch as well, especially in young patients.

Self-management programmes for people post stroke: a systematic review.
Conclusions:This review provides some preliminary support for the potential importance of self-management interventions after stroke. The most appropriate content and best approach for delivery of these interventions remains to be determined. Further high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to test the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of stroke self-management programmes. Correlation between serum neuron specific enolase and functional neurological outcome in patients of acute ischemic stroke
Conclusions: Serum levels of NSE in first few days of ischemic stroke can serve as a useful marker to predict stroke severity and early functional outcome. However, larger studies with serial estimation of NSE are needed to establish these observations more firmly.

HAT Score Outperforms 7 Other Hemorrhagic Transformation Scores in Ischemic Stroke Patients Treated with Thrombolysis (P3.109)
Conclusions: HAT score yielded the highest odds ratio among the 4 scores that accurately predicted sICH in our independent dataset. HAT score also had low computational complexity compared to other scores. Our results demonstrate the potential utility of the HAT score as a predictor of adverse clinical outcome for acute ischemic stroke patients undergoing IV thrombolytic therapy.Disclosure: Dr. Asuzu has nothing to disclose. Correlation of intracranial atherosclerosis with carotid stenosis in ischemic stroke patients
This study aimed to elucidate how the presence of carotid stenosis influenced the pattern of stroke and also how it interacted with other risk factors for stroke. Materials and Methods: Thirty-eight patients with ischemic stroke were included in this study and were investigated with carotid artery Doppler and magnetic resonance angiography for carotid stenosis and intracranial stenosis in the circle of Willis, respectively. Other known risk factors of stroke were also studied in and compared between the subgroups with and without carotid stenosis. Results: In patients without carotid stenosis, anterior cerebral artery was ...

Serum erythropoietin and outcome after ischaemic stroke: a prospective study
Conclusions The crude associations between EPO and worse stroke severity and outcome lost significance after multivariate modelling. However, in patients in whom EPO increased, the association with favourable outcome remained after adjustment for multiple covariates.
