The Association Between Sleep and Health-Related Quality of Life in Stroke Survivors
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends adults engage in a minimum of 7 hours of sleep per 24 hour interval to optimize health. Stroke recovery, with its foundations in neuroplasticity, is impacted by sleep. The purpose of this study was to examine stroke survivor data from the 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), and to compare self-reported measures of physical health (PH) and mental health (MH) for those individuals who met sleep guidelines to those who did not.

Agonistic analog of growth hormone-releasing hormone promotes neurofunctional recovery and neural regeneration in ischemic stroke Neuroscience
Ischemic stroke can induce neurogenesis. However, most stroke-generated newborn neurons cannot survive. It has been shown that MR-409, a potent synthetic agonistic analog of growth hormone–releasing hormone (GHRH), can protect against some life-threatening pathological conditions by promoting cell proliferation and survival. The present study shows that long-term treatment with MR-409...

Acute ischemic stroke in children & #8211; should we thrombolyze ?
KP Vinayan, Vivek Nambiar, Vaishakh AnandAnnals of Indian Academy of Neurology 2022 25(1):21-25 Ischemic stroke is a major cause of acute neurological symptoms in children with significant long-term neurological sequelae. Unlike in the adult population, the clinical presentation of strokes in children may not be stereotyped. Hence, many other differential diagnostic possibilities might have to be considered in the emergency setting. Due to this heterogeneous presentation and the resultant clinical dilemma in the early detection, acute thrombolysis even now remains as a very rarely tried therapeutic option in children. Man...

A Review of the Current Literature and Updates on Embolic Stroke of Undetermined Source (ESUS)
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe initial ESUS construct presumed that atrial fibrillation (AF) would be detected in a substantial percentage of patients, but subsequent studies have determined that the rate of AF detection is much lower than anticipated, thereby highlighting other potential causes of ESUS. To date, there is no clear consensus supporting PFO closure or anticoagulation in ESUS patients. In this review, we discuss the recent studies on potential causes of ESUS and related work-up as well as report the recent trials on the treatment of ESUS.Recent FindingsSome of the potential causes of ESUS are undetected AF, pat...

Tenecteplase and alteplase for thrombolysis of acute ischemic stroke within 4.5 hours: An efficacy and safety study
Conclusions: This study showed a comparable efficacy and safety profile of alteplase and TNK in thrombolysis of AIS throughout the 4.5 hours window period. Moreover, the ease of administration and better pharmacodynamic properties favors tenecteplase.

Evaluation of vascular cognitive impairment using the ICMR-Neuro cognitive tool box (ICMR-NCTB) in a stroke cohort from India
Conclusion: The ICMR-NCTB is a valid neuropsychological toolbox that can be used for comprehensive cognitive assessment and diagnosis of VCI in India. In addition, the Indian version of MoCA is more adept as a screening instrument to detect VCI due to its high sensitivity. The ICMR-NCTB will aid in early detection and management of many patients, thereby reducing the burden of vascular MCI and dementia in India.

Chemical reaction keeps stroke-damaged brain from repairing itself
(Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute) Nitric oxide, a gaseous molecule produced in the brain, can damage neurons. When the brain produces too much nitric oxide, it contributes to the severity and progression of stroke and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. Researchers at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute recently discovered that nitric oxide not only damages neurons, it also shuts down the brain's repair mechanisms. Their study was published Feb. 4 by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
