Saliva-omics in Plasma Cell Disorders-proof of concept and potential as a non-invasive tool for monitoring disease burden and MRD status.
Salivaomics has exciting potential for the diagnosis and monitoring of malignancy, evidence of which has been reported in oral cancer, head and neck malignancies and ovarian cancer. It has been observed that approximately 40% of cancer, stroke and cardiovascular disease biomarkers are present in whole saliva. Salivaomics has become an area of great interest in disease diagnosis over the last number of years, following the footsteps of the other "omics ” based diagnostic tools. Saliva is a fast, inexpensive and non-invasive method of sample collection therefore it might be considered as the biofluid of choice for the diag...

Seizures during treatment of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia: A population-based cohort study.
CONCLUSION: Seizures are relatively common in ALL patients and occur most often in patients with PRES, SVT, or as an isolated symptom. Older children have higher risk of seizures. PMID: 32340855 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Respiratory Variations in Aortic Blood Flow to Predict Volume Responsiveness in Ventilated Children With Leukemia and Neutropenic Septic Shock*
Conclusions: Respiratory variation in velocity time integral of aortic blood flow and respiratory variation in peak velocity of aortic blood flow derived from transthoracic echocardiography showed only a fair reliability in predicting volume responsiveness in ventilated children with leukemia and neutropenic septic shock.

A Case of Multiple Sclerosis —Like Relapsing Remitting Encephalomyelitis Following Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation and a Review of the Published Literature
Complications involving the central nervous system (CNS) occur in 9–14% of patients following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), including stroke-like episodes, demyelination, encephalitis, and nonspecific neurological symptoms. Here we report a case of multiple sclerosis (MS) like relapsing remitting encephalomyelitis following allogeneic HSCT, which did not respond to disease modifying therapies (DMTs) and “domino” autologous HSCT. A 53-year-old male was treated with allogeneic HSCT for lymphoid blast transformation of chronic myeloid leukemia. Ten months later he presented with confusion, s...

Cancers, Vol. 12, Pages 1285: Genome-Wide Association Meta-Analysis of Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms and Symptomatic Venous Thromboembolism during Therapy for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and Lymphoma in Caucasian Children
Conclusion: This represents the largest GWAS meta-analysis conducted to date associating SNPs to VTE in children and adolescents treated on childhood ALL protocols. Validation of these findings is needed and may then lead to patient stratification for VTE preventive interventions. As VTE hemostasis involves multiple pathways, a more powerful GWAS is needed to detect combination of variants associated with VTE.

Mixed Lineage Leukemia 1 Promoted Neuron Apoptosis in Ischemic Penumbra via Regulating ASK-1/TNF- α Complex
This study aimed to explore the underlying mechanism of neuron apoptosis in ischemic penumbra via histone methyltransferase (HMT) mixed lineage leukemia 1 (MLL1) mediated epigenetic pathway. Mouse IS model was established by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Mouse primary cortical mixed cells were cultured and treated with oxygen–glucose deprivation (OGD) to simulate IS process. The expressions of apoptosis signal regulating kinase-1 (ASK-1), pASK-1, cleaved caspase-3, ASK-1/serine–threonine kinase receptor-associated protein (STRAP)/14-3-3 complex, ASK-1/tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) complex, and MLL1 in mo...

Prevalence of leukoencephalopathy and its potential cognitive sequelae in cancer patients.
In conclusion, leukoencephalopathy is well-documented for ALL patients (with a focus on methotrexate), but there is a lack of knowledge for other intravenous chemotherapeutics, other oncological populations, wider age ranges and possible risk factors (e.g. history of CNS event). Furthermore, the long-term neuropsychological impact and potential risk for neurodegenerative processes due to leukoencephalopathy remains inconclusive. Hence, large international databanks, epidemiological and prospective case-control studies are necessary to stratify risk groups for CNS-related side effects. Four-Dimensional Echocardiographic Evaluation of Left Ventricular Systolic Functions in Patients with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia Receiving Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors.
Abstract Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are established treatment for haematological malignancies. However, cardiac adverse effects, including the reduction in left ventricular ejection fraction and symptomatic heart failure remain clinical problems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the left ventricular systolic functions in patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia receiving TKIs. A cross-sectional and observational study was conducted of 37 patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia receiving dasatinib or nilotinib after imatinib failure. Left ventricular systolic functions were evaluated using four-dimen...

Severe, Fatal Methotrexate-related Neurotoxicity in 2 Adolescent Patients With ALL
Neurotoxicity is a well-documented adverse effect of methotrexate in the treatment of pediatric cancers. The spectrum of symptoms is broad, can include stroke-like episodes and seizures, and classically resolves within days. The majority of patients tolerate subsequent doses without recurrence of symptoms. The population of patients who experience persistent and irreversible neurologic symptoms is poorly described, with the existing literature suggestive of a relationship with radiation therapy. The authors present a case series of 2 patients with pre-B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia who developed severe and ultimately ...

New-onset Post-transplant Diabetes and Therapy in Long-term Survivors After Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
Conclusion: After allo-HSCT, a significant number of patients developed PTDM and patients with acute graft-versus-host-disease were found to have a higher risk for PTDM. Long-term and continuous follow-up for diabetes and cardiovascular risk factors after HSCT is important in order to be able to provide timely and appropriate treatment.

Targeted Cancer Therapies.
Abstract Targeted cancer therapies involve chemotherapeutic agents that attack, directly or indirectly, a specific genetic biomarker found in a given cancer. Targeted oncology includes monoclonal antibodies, small molecule inhibitors, antibody-drug conjugates, and immunotherapy. For example, the monoclonal antibodies trastuzumab and pertuzumab target human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) and are used when treating HER2-positive breast cancer. Although targeted oncology has improved survival by years for some incurable cancers such as metastatic breast and lung cancer, as few as 8% of patients with advanc...

Identification of Novel Biomarkers for Pre-diabetic Diagnosis Using a Combinational Approach
Reliable protein markers for pre-diabetes in humans are not clinically available. In order to identify novel and reliable protein markers for pre-diabetes in humans, healthy volunteers and patients diagnosed with pre-diabetes and stroke were recruited for blood collection. Blood samples were collected from healthy and pre-diabetic subjects 12 h after fasting. BMI was calculated from body weight and height. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), insulin and albumin were assayed by automated clinical laboratory ...
