Current practice of Dutch cardiologists in detecting and diagnosing atrial fibrillation: results of an online case vignette study.
CONCLUSION: Dutch cardiologists have access to a wide variety of ambulatory arrhythmia monitoring tools. Nearly half of the cardiologists would perform opportunistic screening. In cases with non-frequent symptoms, monitoring duration was shorter than recommended by NICE. PMID: 28631211 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Review of screening studies for atrial fibrillation in rural populations of 11 countries.
Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common cardiac arrhythmia, and pathological burden can be influenced by environmental factors. The rural environment may influence the burden of AF, although no systematic review studies have been conducted to address this issue. We performed a systematic review of AF screening studies conducted in rural global populations to determine the burden, risk factors, and screening methods surrounding AF in these settings. Out of the 1792 articles gathered from a keyword search of medical databases and reference lists, 18 publications from 11 countries were included in our analysis....

Design of the Swiss Atrial Fibrillation Cohort Study (Swiss-AF): structural brain damage and cognitive decline among patients with atrial fibrillation.
CONCLUSION: Swiss-AF is a large national prospective cohort of patients with AF in Switzerland. This study will provide important new information on structural and functional brain damage in patients with AF and on other AF related complications, using a large variety of genetic, phenotypic and health economic parameters. Troponin elevation in other conditions than acute coronary syndromes.
We present some clinical cases that illustrate this diagnostic problem. A troponin elevation is observed in myopericarditis, renal failure, heart failure, pulmonary embolism, septic shock, rhabdomyolysis, stroke and others where there is a myocardial damage unrelated to coronary occlusion. Many cases of false positives, which raise the possibility of analytical interferences, must be identified. PMID: 28751286 [PubMed - in process]

Cardiovascular Event Prediction by Machine Learning: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.
Conclusions: Machine learning in conjunction with deep phenotyping improve prediction accuracy in cardiovascular event prediction in an initially asymptomatic population. These methods may lead to greater insights regarding subclinical disease markers without apriori assumptions of causality. PMID: 28794054 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Cuffless Blood Pressure Estimation Using Pulse Transit Time and Photoplethysmogram Intensity Ratio.
Authors: Gholamhosseini H, Baig M, Rastegar S, Lindén M Abstract High blood pressure (BP) is one of the common risk factors for heart disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, and kidney disease. An accurate, continuous and cuffless BP monitoring technique could help clinicians improve the rate of prevention, detection, and treatment of hypertension and related diseases. Pulse transit time (PTT) has attracted interest as an index of BP changes for cuffless BP measurement techniques. Currently, PPT-based BP measurement approaches have improved and are able to relieve the discomfort associated with an inflated cuff...

Comparison between electrocardiogram- and photoplethysmogram-derived features for atrial fibrillation detection in free-living conditions
Objective : Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most commonly experienced arrhythmia and it increases the risk of stroke and heart failure. The challenge in detecting the presence of AF is the occasional and asymptomatic manifestation of the condition. Long-term monitoring can increase the sensitivity of detecting intermittent AF episodes, however it is either cumbersome or invasive and costly with electrocardiography (ECG). Photoplethysmography (PPG) is an unobtrusive measuring modality enabling heart rate monitoring, and promising results have been presented in detecting AF. However, there is still limited knowledge ab...

Electrocardiogram in Chagas disease
Abstract Since the initial descriptions of Chagas cardiomyopathy (ChCM), the electrocardiography has played a key role in patient evaluations. The diagnostic criterion of chronic ChCM is the presence of characteristic electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities in seropositive individuals, regardless of the presence of symptoms. However, these ECG abnormalities are rarely specific to ChCM and, particularly among the elderly, can be caused by other simultaneous cardiomyopathies. ECG abnormalities can predict the occurrence of heart failure, stroke, and even death. Nevertheless, most prognostic studies have included Chagas dise...

YiQiFuMai Powder Injection Attenuates Coronary Artery Ligation-Induced Heart Failure Through Improving Mitochondrial Function via Regulating ROS Generation and CaMKII Signaling Pathways
This study was carried out in accordance with the recommendations of “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, National Institutes of Health.” The protocol was approved by the “China Pharmaceutical University.” Surgical Preparation The mice were anesthetized with chloral hydrate (4% chloral hydrate, ip). The HF model was induced by CAL as previously reported (Gao et al., 2010). Successful ligation of the coronary artery was confirmed by the occurrence of ST-segment elevation in electrocardiogram. Sham operated mice were performed the same process except left CAL. After ligation, the h...

Atrial Transcriptional Profiles of Molecular Targets Mediating Electrophysiological Function in Aging and Pgc-1 β Deficient Murine Hearts
Conclusion: These findings limit the possible roles of gene transcriptional changes in previously reported age-dependent pro-arrhythmic electrophysiologial changes observed in Pgc-1β-/- atria to an altered Ca2+-ATPase (Atp2a2) expression. This directly parallels previously reported arrhythmic mechanism associated with p21-activated kinase type 1 deficiency. This could add to contributions from the direct physiological outcomes of mitochondrial dysfunction, whether through reactive oxygen species (ROS) production or altered Ca2+ homeostasis. Introduction Atrial arrhythmias constitute a major public health pro...

Existing screening methods require prolonged monitoring and are limited by cost and low yield. We aimed to develop a rapid, inexpensive, point-of-care means of identifying patients with atrial ...
