Effect of statin use on clinical outcomes in ischemic stroke patients with atrial fibrillation
The objective of this study was to clarify whether statin therapy can influence the prognosis in recent ischemic stroke patients with atrial fibrillation. We identified ischemic stroke patients with atrial fibrillation between 2001 and 2011 from Taiwan National Health Insurance Database. Patients not treated with statins during the first 90 days after the index stroke were matched to patients treated with statins in the first 90 days in a 2:1 ratio on the basis of age, sex, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, heart failure, estimated National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, use of anticoagulant, an...

ISHLT 2017: Medtronic HVAD trial misses primary endpoint, reports lowered stroke rates
Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) said today that results from the Endurance supplemental trial of its HVAD heart pump system did not meet its primary endpoint, but did report  lowered stroke rates compared to standard treatment. The trial aimed to evaluate the use of the HVAD system, which it picked up along with HeartWare last year, as a destination therapy for patients who require a left ventricular assist device and received improved blood pressure management, the Fridley, Minn.-based company said. Data from the study was presented at the 2017 International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Scientific Meeting in San Dieg...

Multimorbidities Are Associated to Lower Survival in Ischaemic Stroke: Results from a Brazilian Stroke Cohort (EMMA Study)
Conclusions: A high burden of comorbidities represented an independent predictor of poor prognosis increasing the risk of dying by 2 to 3 times among IS up to 9 years in the EMMA study. The inclusion of other CVRF such as AF and stroke recurrence slightly modified all-cause mortality risk.Cerebrovasc Dis 2017;44:232-239

Importance rating of risk factors of ischemic stroke in patients over 85 years old in the polish population
Conclusion The course of brain stroke in the Polish population is more severe in patients over 85 years old than in younger ones. The key risk factor in this group is atrial fibrillation.

Effect of Variation in Published Stroke Rates on the Net Clinical Benefit of Anticoagulation for Atrial Fibrillation.
Conclusion: Variation in published AF stroke rates for patients not receiving anticoagulant therapy results in multifold variation in the net clinical benefit of anticoagulation. Guidelines should better reflect the uncertainty in current thresholds of stroke risk score for recommending anticoagulation. Primary Funding Source: None. Differences between Atrial Fibrillation Detected before and after Stroke and TIA: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: We found significant differences in the prevalence of vascular comorbidities, structural heart disease, and stroke recurrence rates between AFDAS and KAF, suggesting that they constitute different clinical entities within the AF spectrum. Protocol for Home-Based Solution for Remote Atrial Fibrillation Screening to Prevent Recurrence Stroke (HUA-TUO AF Trial): a randomised controlled trial
The objective of the study was to explore the use of long-term home-based ECG monitoring for AF detection and stroke prevention in patients with a history of stroke. Methods and analysis This prospective, randomised, open-label trial with blinded endpoint adjudication aimed to evaluate the efficacy of long-term home-based ECG monitoring for AF detection and stroke prevention in a 24-month period. Patients aged >18 years with a history of ischaemic stroke will be stratified according to the time from the index ischaemic stroke: <1, 1–3 and >3 years and then randomised in 1:1 to (1) home-based AF screening an...
