Significance of CHA 2 DS 2 -VAS C on the severity and hemorrhagic transformation in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation-induced acute ischemic stroke
This study aimed to identify the significance of CHA2DS2-VASC score on the severity and hemorrhagic transformation (HT) in patients with NVAF-induced acute ischemic stroke (NVAF-AIS). Total 113 patients diagnosed as NVAF-AIS were included in this study. Patients were categorized into severe stroke group (NIHSS  >  10) and non-severe group (NIHSS ≤ 10), and the risk factors for severe stroke were investigated. Based on the results of repeated brain CT/MRI examination performed within 14 days from stroke onset or immediately in case of clinical worsening, patients were divided into HT group and non-HT group, an...

Plasma D ‐dimer concentrations predicting stroke risk and rivaroxaban benefit in patients with heart failure and sinus rhythm: an analysis from the COMMANDER‐HF trial
ConclusionsIn COMMANDER-HF, rivaroxaban reduced the risk of stroke but the benefit may be confined to patients with D-dimer concentrations above 515  ng/mL. Prospective trials are warranted to confirm these findings.

Oral anticoagulants vs antiplatelets in cryptogenic stroke with potential cardiac emboli: Meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: OACs compared with antiplatelet therapies were associated with a reduced recurrent ischemic stroke risk and OACs might be a viable non-procedural alternative in patients with cryptogenic stroke and potential cardiac emboli.PMID:34419310 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejim.2021.08.002

Atrial fibrillation and stroke: importance of left atrium as assessed by echocardiography
AbstractAtrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia, which has been increasing dramatically. AF has unfavorable consequences, such as stroke, heart failure, and cardiovascular death. Of these, stroke has been considered to be the serious complication. Recently, direct oral anticoagulation or new technologies, such as the WATCHMAN left atrium (LA) appendage closure device, have emerged to prevent stroke. Therefore, the accurate estimation of thromboembolic risk and appropriate prevention are essential for high-risk patients with AF. Although CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores has been widely used to...

Essen score in the prediction of cerebrovascular events compared with cardiovascular events after ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack: a nationwide registry analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The Essen score is potentially more suitable for risk stratification of cardiovascular events than cerebrovascular events. Moreover, future predictive tools should take brain imaging findings and cause of stroke into consideration.PMID:35572218 | PMC:PMC9068593 | DOI:10.11909/j.issn.1671-5411.2022.04.002

Heart Failure Status among Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients: A Hospital-Based Study
CONCLUSION: There is a high prevalence of HF among acute ischemic stroke patients. Older patients with a history of hypertension and previous MI are at higher risk. Since patients with HF have a higher mortality and morbidity rate after experiencing an ischemic stroke, close cooperation between the neurology and cardiology specialists for providing advanced care for survivors is required.PMID:36059928 | PMC:PMC9433237 | DOI:10.1155/2022/7348505

Identification of magnetic resonance imaging features for the prediction of unrecognized atrial fibrillation in acute ischemic stroke
Conclusion Initial MRI at the time of stroke may be useful to predict which patients have cardioembolic stroke caused by unrecognized AF. Further studies are warranted to verify these findings and their application to high-risk patients.
