Outcomes of Thrombolytic Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke in Dialysis Dependant Patients in the United States (S02.003)

Paradoxical Association of Smoking With In-Hospital Mortality Among Patients Admitted With Acute Ischemic Stroke Stroke
Conclusions Similar to myocardial ischemia, smoking was independently associated with lower inpatient mortality in acute ischemic stroke. This effect may be due to tobacco-induced changes in cerebrovascular vasoreactivity, or may be due in part to residual confounding. Larger, multicenter studies are needed to confirm the finding and the effect on 30-day and 1-year mortality.

Glycosylated Hemoglobin A1 Predicts Risk for Symptomatic Hemorrhage After Thrombolysis for Acute Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In our study, HbA1c turns out to be an important predictor of sICH after thrombolysis for acute stroke. These results suggest that hemorrhage after thrombolysis may be a consequence of long-term vascular injury rather than of acute hyperglycemia, and that HbA1c may be a better predictor than acute blood glucose or a history of diabetes mellitus.

Differences in Outcome and Predictors Between Ischemic and Intracerebral Hemorrhage: The South London Stroke Register Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— ICH has poorer outcomes up to 5 years after stroke. The improvement of functional outcome up to 3 months was significantly greater with ICH. Identification of factors associated with poor outcome may be used for clinical predictions.

Metformin-inclusive Therapy Reduces the Risk of Stroke in Patients with Diabetes: A 4-Year Follow-up Study
Metformin is a kind of oral hypoglycemic agents commonly prescribed to patients with diabetes mellitus. Implementation of a Structured Guideline-Based Program for the Secondary Prevention of Ischemic Stroke in China Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— The implementation of a program to improve adherence to secondary ischemic stroke prevention efforts in China is feasible, but these programs had only a limited impact on adherence and no impact on 1-year outcomes. Sex Differences in Trends of Incidence and Mortality of First-Ever Stroke in Rural Tianjin, China, From 1992 to 2012 Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— There was a significant increase in the incidence of first-ever stroke in women annually and a declining trend in the male/female rate ratio in rural China during the past 21 years. These results suggest that stroke will become one of the major diseases affecting women in future decades in China.

Metabolic Syndrome Associated with Ischemic Stroke among the Mexican Hispanic Population in the El Paso/US–Mexico Border Region
In this report, data were collected in the El Paso/US–Mexico border region, where 82% of the population is Mexican Hispanic, through a retrospective study of ischemic stroke from 2005-2010. Odds ratios (ORs), 95% confidence intervals, logistic regression, and multivariate analysis of the ORs adjusted for other variables, were used to analyze the effects of various risk factors on ischemic stroke. The Long-term Nutritional Status in Stroke Patients and its Predictive Factors

Conclusion: This study represents the largest clinical experience of the safety of thrombolysis in patients on prior antiplatelet therapy. Despite a higher incidence of sICH, the absolute excess risk appears small (0.67%). These findings support current guideline recommendations regarding use of intravenous tPA in patients on antiplatelet therapy with careful weighing of potential risk and benefit.
