Therapeutic targets of neuroprotection and neurorestoration in ischemic stroke: Applications for natural compounds from medicinal herbs
Biomed Pharmacother. 2022 Feb 12;148:112719. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2022.112719. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNeuroprotective and neurorestorative therapy represent two major drug intervention strategies for ischemic stroke. Multiple factors such as excitotoxicity, inflammation, angiogenesis, and neurogenesis are the main pathological processes that underlie acute and chronic ischemic brain injury. Furthermore, their intimate interactions mediate blood-brain barrier permeability, increase neurovascular unit structural damage as well as a hemorrhagic transformation during ischemic stroke. We aimed to review the current unde...

Efficacy and safety of Buyang-Huanwu-Tang (Boyang-Hwano-Tang) in patients with vascular dementia: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The results support the clinical use of BHT for the improvement of cognitive function in patients with vascular dementia. The methodological quality of the included studies was relatively poor. Therefore, further rigorously designed trials are required.PMID:35168040 | DOI:10.1016/j.ctcp.2022.101547

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 1754: Traditional East Asian Herbal Medicine for Post-Stroke Insomnia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
Lim Post-stroke insomnia (PSI) is a highly prevalent complication after stroke. Current evidence of psychotropic drug use for PSI management is scarce and indicates harmful adverse events (AEs). Traditional East Asian herbal medicine is a widely used traditional remedy for insomnia. However, so far, no study has systematically reviewed the efficacy and safety of traditional east asian herbal medicine (HM) for PSI. Therefore, we perform meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of HM for PSI. After a comprehensive electronic search of 15 databases, we review the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of HM use...

Suppressing NK Cells by Astragaloside IV Protects Against Acute Ischemic Stroke in Mice Via Inhibiting STAT3
In conclusion, ASIV inhibits post-ischemic brain infiltration and activation of NK cells through STAT3 suppression, and this inhibitory effect of ASIV on NK cells plays a key role in its protection against acute ischemic brain injury. Our findings suggest that ASIV is a promising therapeutic candidate in NK cell-based immunotherapy for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke and pave the way for potential clinical trials.

A Network Meta-Analysis of the Clinical Efficacy and Safety of Commonly Used Chinese Patent Medicines in the Auxiliary Treatment of Poststroke Depression
CONCLUSION: The mechanisms of seven CPMs in the adjuvant treatment of PSD have advantages. In terms of safety and efficacy, the CPMs had better clinical adjuvant treatment performance. Although this study concluded that the Jieyu Anshen capsule is the preferred drug for clinical treatment, a clear conclusion still needs to be verified in a high-quality randomized controlled study. In clinical practice, accurate selection and application can be carried out according to the specific characteristics of patients.PMID:35035507 | PMC:PMC8758270 | DOI:10.1155/2022/7265769

Recent Advances in Chinese Herbal Medicine for Cerebral Ischemic Reperfusion Injury
Cerebral ischemic reperfusion injury (CI/RI) is a critical factor that leads to a poor prognosis in patients with ischemic stroke. It is an extremely complicated pathological process that is clinically characterized by high rates of disability and mortality. Current available treatments for CI/RI, including mechanical and drug therapies, are often accompanied by significant side effects. Therefore, it is necessary to discovery new strategies for treating CI/RI. Many studies confirm that Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) was used as a potential drug for treatment of CI/RI with the advantages of abundant resources, good efficacy...

Neuroprotective Effect of Daidzein Extracted From Pueraria lobate Radix in a Stroke Model Via the Akt/mTOR/BDNF Channel
Daidzein is a plant isoflavonoid primarily isolated from Pueraria lobate Radix as the dry root of P. lobata (Wild.) Ohwi, have long been used as nutraceutical and medicinal herb in China. Despite the report that daidzein can prevent neuronal damage and improve outcome in experimental stroke, the mechanisms of this neuroprotective action have been not fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to determine whether the daidzein elicits beneficial actions in a stroke model, namely, cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, and to reveal the underlying neuroprotective mechanisms associated with the regulation of Akt/mTOR/BD...
