Protective effects of Japanese sake yeast on depressive-like behaviors, oxidative stress and inflammatory parameters in a rat model of global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion
This study evaluates the effects of sake yeast on depressive-like behaviors, oxidative stress and inflammatory parameters in a rat model of global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion. Rats were divided into four groups, including 1) control: without bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) and sake supplement, 2) Ischemia group: rats induced with BCCAO and lack of therapeutic supplement, and 3 and 4) Ischemia + sake groups: rats induced with BCCAO and treated with 25 and 50 mg/kg sake yeast, respectively. Depressive-like behaviors antioxidant enzymes activities were assessed. The induction of stroke increased oxidant st...

Lithium Co-administration with rutin improves post-stroke neurological outcomes via suppressing Gsk-3 β activity in a rat model
Free Radic Biol Med. 2023 Jul 4:S0891-5849(23)00522-1. doi: 10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2023.07.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCerebral ischemic stroke is one of the leading causes of adult disability worldwide. Reperfusion is the only therapeutic option with a lot of side effects. In the current study, we investigated the efficacy of rutin and lithium co-treatment in improving post-stroke neurological outcomes in a transient global cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury rat model. Middle-aged male rats were subjected to transient global cerebral ischemia-reperfusion. NORT and Y-maze were used to assess the cognitive process...

Clinical Potential of Hydrogen Sulfide in Peripheral Arterial Disease
Int J Mol Sci. 2023 Jun 9;24(12):9955. doi: 10.3390/ijms24129955.ABSTRACTPeripheral artery disease (PAD) affects more than 230 million people worldwide. PAD patients suffer from reduced quality of life and are at increased risk of vascular complications and all-cause mortality. Despite its prevalence, impact on quality of life and poor long-term clinical outcomes, PAD remains underdiagnosed and undertreated compared to myocardial infarction and stroke. PAD is due to a combination of macrovascular atherosclerosis and calcification, combined with microvascular rarefaction, leading to chronic peripheral ischemia. Novel therap...

Melatonin mitigates type 1 diabetes ‐aggravated cerebral ischemia‐reperfusion injury through anti‐inflammatory and anti‐apoptotic effects
ConclusionsT1DM aggravates CIRI. Melatonin treatment is neuroprotective against CIRI in T1DM rats via anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects.

Tetramethylpyrazine alleviates mitochondrial abnormality in models of cerebral ischemia and oxygen/glucose deprivation Reoxygenation
Exp Neurol. 2023 Jun 10:114468. doi: 10.1016/j.expneurol.2023.114468. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTraditional herbal medicine Ligusticum wallichii Franchat (Chuan Xiong) is frequently prescribed and highly recommended to patients with stroke. Rodent studies have demonstrated the neuroprotective effects of its active component tetramethylpyrazine against post-stroke brain injury and highlighted its role in antioxidant, anti-inflammation, and anti-apoptosis activity. Using permanent cerebral ischemia in rats and oxygen/glucose deprivation and reoxygenation (OGDR) in rat primary neuron/glia cultures, this study sheds light ...

Can ‘toxic’ bilirubin treat a variety of illnesses?
Generations of medical and biology students have been instilled with a dim view of bilirubin. Spawned when the body trashes old red blood cells, the molecule is harmful refuse and a sign of illness. High blood levels cause jaundice, which turns the eyes and skin yellow and can signal liver trouble. Newborns can’t process the compound, and although high levels normally subside, a persistent surplus can cause brain damage. Yet later this year up to 40 healthy Australian volunteers may begin receiving infusions of the supposedly good-for-nothing molecule. They will be participating in a phase 1 safety trial, sponsored ...

Zhilong Huoxue Tongyu capsule attenuates intracerebral hemorrhage induced redox imbalance by modulation of Nrf2 signaling pathway
Conclusion: ZLHXTY capsules possess an intrinsic antioxidant potential that can modulate the ICH-induced redox imbalance in the brain as revealed by the normalization of Nrf2 and its downstream antioxidant targets.

Endothelial glycocalyx injury is involved in heatstroke-associated coagulopathy and protected by N-acetylcysteine
DiscussionOur results indicate that the poor prognosis of HS patients correlates with severe coagulation disorders, coagulation abnormalities in HS rats are associated with the damage of EGCX, and NAC improves HS-induced coagulopathy, probably through its protection against EGCX injury by preventing ROS generation.
