Hepatocyte growth factor is associated with progression of atherosclerosis: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)
Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) has previously been associated with risk of stroke, coronary heart disease, and atherosclerosis. We hypothesized that higher circulating HGF is associated with greater progression of measures of atherosclerosis: coronary artery calcium (CAC) and carotid plaque.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation in bicuspid anatomy: procedural results with two different types of valves.
CONCLUSIONS: Postprocedural aortic regurgitation is still an issue in BAV undergone TAVI when: 1) the annulus is big; 2) when we are using self-expandable valves; and 3) in type 0 valves. Lotus valve, with a higher radial force put in a small annuls seems associated to better procedural outcomes in this subset of patients. PMID: 29512361 [PubMed - in process]

Vascular smooth muscle contraction in hypertension
AbstractHypertension is a major risk factor for many common chronic diseases, such as heart failure, myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular dementia, and chronic kidney disease. Pathophysiological mechanisms contributing to the development of hypertension include increased vascular resistance, determined in large part by reduced vascular diameter due to increased vascular contraction and arterial remodelling. These processes are regulated by complex-interacting systems such as the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, sympathetic nervous system, immune activation, and oxidative stress, which influence vascular smooth musc...

Aortic Root Calcification Score as an Independent Factor for Predicting Major Adverse Cardiac Events in Familial Hypercholesterolemia.
CONCLUSIONS: ARC was significantly associated with future MACE in Japanese patients with heterozygous FH. ARC may start to develop, on average, at 17.4 and 19.7 years of age in males and females, respectively, with heterozygous FH. PMID: 29321389 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effects of Cilnidipine, an L/N-Type Calcium Channel Blocker, on Carotid Atherosclerosis in Japanese Post-Stroke Hypertensive Patients: Results from the CA-ATTEND Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Cilnidipine promoted the regression of common carotid IMT in post-stroke hypertensive patients, especially in the thick group. Cilnidipine also reduced the IAD in both normal and thick groups. PMID: 29225324 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Diuretic or Beta-Blocker for Hypertensive Patients Already Receiving ACEI/ARB and Calcium Channel Blocker
ConclusionAdding a diuretic may be better than adding a beta-blocker for treating hypertensive patients with prior CVA history who have already received ACEIs/ARBs and CCBs.

A Prospective Survey of Atrial Fibrillation Management for Real-world Guideline Adherence: COmparison study of Drugs for symptom control and complication prEvention of Atrial Fibrillation (CODE-AF) Registry.
CONCLUSION: This study shows how successfully guidelines can be applied in the real world. The nonadherence rate was 17.2%, 9.9%, and 22.4% for stroke prevention, rate control, and rhythm control, respectively. PMID: 29171211 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

TRPM7 (Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin-Like 7 Channel) Kinase Controls Calcium Responses in Arterial Thrombosis and Stroke in Mice.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results identify TRPM7 kinase as a key modulator of phospholipase C signaling and store-operated Ca(2+) entry in platelets. The protection of Trpm7(R/R) mice from acute ischemic disease without developing intracranial hemorrhage indicates that TRPM7 kinase might be a promising antithrombotic target. Personalised Single-Pill Combination Therapy in Hypertensive Patients: An Update of a Practical Treatment Platform
AbstractDespite the improvements in the management of hypertension during the last three decades, it continues to be one of the leading causes of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality worldwide. Effective and sustained reductions in blood pressure (BP) reduce the incidence of myocardial infarction, stroke, congestive heart failure and cardiovascular death. However, the proportion of patients who achieve the recommended BP goal (<  140/90 mmHg) is persistently low, worldwide. Poor adherence to therapy, complex therapeutic regimens, clinical inertia, drug-related adverse events and multiple risk factors or comorbiditie...

Prognostic Application of Thoracic Aortic Calcium Scoring for Adverse Clinical Outcome Risk in Elderly Patients with Left Ventricular Hypertrophy.
CONCLUSION: TACS provides robust predictive utility for a composite of cardiovascular events and cardiac death in persons with LVH. This finding was less pronounced in those with a relatively healthy myocardium, defined by the absence of LVH. PMID: 29035431 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Thoracic extra-coronary calcification for the prediction of stroke: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis
We examined whether the cumulative burden of thoracic extra-coronary calcification (ECC) improves prediction of stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), and stroke mortality beyond traditional risk factors and coronary artery calcium (CAC).

Abstract 031: Diastolic Blood Pressure, Coronary Artery Calcium, and Cardiac Outcomes in the Multi-ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis Session Title: Cardiac Hypertrophy and Dysfunction
Diastolic blood pressure (BP) has a J-curve relationship with coronary heart disease and death. Because this association is thought to reflect reduced coronary perfusion at low diastolic BP, our objective was to test whether the J-curve is most pronounced among persons with coronary artery calcium. Among 6,811 participants from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, we used Cox models to examine if diastolic BP category is associated with coronary heart disease events, stroke, and mortality. Analyses were conducted in the sample overall and after stratification by coronary artery calcium score. In multivariable-adjuste...

Aging Modulates the Substrate and Triggers Remodeling in Atrial Fibrillation.
Abstract Aging plays a critical role in the genesis of atrial fibrillation (AF) and also increases the risks of cardiac dysfunction and stroke in AF patients. AF is caused by increased AF triggering from abnormalities of the thoracic vein and/or modulated substrate (atrial) with enhancement of AF maintenance. Clinical and laboratory evidence indicates that aging is significant in the creation of atrial electrical and structural remodeling that leads to increased susceptibility to AF occurrence. Aging is commonly associated with cardiovascular comorbidities, oxidative stress, calcium dysregulation, atrial myopathy ...
