Fibroblast Growth Factor-23 and Cardiovascular Disease in the General Population: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis Original Articles
Conclusions— Higher serum FGF-23 concentrations are associated with subclinical cardiac disease and with new heart failure and coronary disease events, but not with carotid intima-media thickness or stroke. FGF-23 may be a novel cardiovascular risk factor in the general population.

Antihypertensive treatment and risk of atrial fibrillation: a nationwide study
Conclusion Use of ACEis and ARBs compared with β-blockers and diuretics associates with a reduced risk of atrial fibrillation, but not stroke, within the limitations of a retrospective study reporting associations. This suggests that controlling activation of the renin-angiotensin system in addition to controlling blood pressure is associated with a reduced risk of atrial fibrillation.

Controversy Regarding the Association of High Calcium Intake and Increased Risk for Cardiovascular Disease
Calcium intake has been shown to be associated with beneficial effects regarding hypertension, coronary heart disease (CHD), vascular disease, and stroke by several prospective cohort studies. However, recent studies have questioned the beneficial cardiovascular effects of calcium intake and instead have shown that high calcium intake is associated with an increased risk for CHD and stroke. These findings have created controversy and concern among physicians, because calcium is consumed by a large number of older men and women to prevent osteoporosis and bone fractures. Based on the methods of patient self‐reporting of c...

Association of computed tomography-derived left atrial size with major cardiovascular events in the general population: The Heinz Nixdorf Recall Study
Conclusion: LA size is associated with incident major CV events independent of risk factors and CAC-score. Once cardiac CT imaging is performed, assessment of LA size may complement information of this imaging modality.Highlights:

U Wave Variability in the Surface ECG
A 72‐year‐old man with heart failure, left ventricular dysfunction (ejection fraction 20%), prior ischemic stroke, COPD, and exacerbation of chronic renal failure was admitted in our unit. Serum potassium was 6.1 mmol/L, calcium concentration was at the lower normal range 2.15 mmol/L, and NT‐pro‐BNP was 28,900 pg/mL. The surface 12‐lead electrocardiogram (ECG) showed sinus rhythm at 60 bpm, PR interval 160 ms, QRS duration 115 ms, QT interval 460 ms, and left ventricular hypertrophy criteria. Negative T waves in leads I, II, aVL, and V4–V6 were also seen. In leads V4–V6, negative U waves were observed in conc...

Use of drug treatment for secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease in urban and rural communities of China: China Kadoorie Biobank Study of 0.5million people
Conclusions: Despite recent improvements in hospital care in China, only one in three individuals with prior CVD was routinely treated with any proven secondary preventive drugs. The treatment rates were correlated with the existence of other risk factors, in particular evidence of hypertension.

Heme iron intake and acute myocardial infarction: A prospective study of men
Conclusions: Findings from this prospective study indicate that a high heme iron intake, particularly with simultaneous low intake of minerals that can decrease iron absorption, may increase the risk of fatal AMI.

Recurrent stroke and myocardial infarction in a young woman with severe osteoporosis and hyperparathyroidism
We have taken great interest in the recently published article entitled “ Effect of calcium or vitamin D supplementation on vascular outcomes: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trial” . Likewise, since parathormone (PTH) is a vasoactive peptide, we, herein, wish to draw attention to the fact that primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) can –as well– be in association with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (i.e. myocardial infarction (MI), heart failure, thrombosis or cardioembolism, hypertension), stroke and osteoporosis . In this regard, we exemplify the clinical scenario of one of our pertinent patients.

Association of the RYR3 gene polymorphisms with atherosclerosis in elderly Japanese population
Conclusion: rs877087 and rs2229116 of RYR3 gene are associated with atherosclerosis severity in Japanese. The functional difference caused by rs2229116 needs to be investigated.

Understanding Digoxin
Most of us have heard of, or encountered a patient taking Digoxin at some point in our carreers. But, do we understand what it is and how it affects our patient?    Digoxin (Lanoxin), is a Cardiac Glycoside, derived from the foxglove plant, Digitalis. This medication is often seen in the pre-hospital setting, used for the treatment of:    Heart Failure (HF) with reduced Systolic Function   Atrial Fibrillation (AF) and Atrial Flutter (A-flutter) associated with Rapid Ventricular Response (RVR)   Cardiomyopathies   Often combined with Calcium and Beta Channel Blockers, Angiot...

Can cardiac computed tomography predict cardiovascular events in asymptomatic type-2 diabetics?: results of a long term follow-up
This study aims to evaluate the usefulness of calcium score (CS) and coronary computed tomography (CT) angiography (CTA) to predict fatal and non fatal cardiovascular events (CVEV) in T2DP. Methods: Eighty-five consecutive T2DP undergoing CT (Phillips Brilliance, 16-slice) with CS and CTA were prospectively enrolled in a transversal case-control study. Patients were followed for 48 months (range 18 - 68) to assess CVEV: cardiovascular death, acute coronary syndrome, revascularisation and stroke. Potential predictors of CVEV were identified. Predictive models based on clinical features, CTA and CS were created and compared....

Role of 20-HETE, TRPC channels, and BKCa in dysregulation of pressure-induced Ca2+ signaling and myogenic constriction of cerebral arteries in aged hypertensive mice
Hypertension in the elderly substantially increases the risk of stroke and vascular cognitive impairment in part due to an impaired functional adaptation of aged cerebral arteries to high blood pressure. To elucidate the mechanisms underlying impaired autoregulatory protection in aging, hypertension was induced in young (3 mo) and aged (24 mo) C57BL/6 mice by chronic infusion of angiotensin II and pressure-induced changes in smooth muscle cell (SMC) intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) and myogenic constriction of middle cerebral arteries (MCA) were assessed. In MCAs from young hypertensive mice, pressure-induced inc...
