The plasticity of late-onset dementia: A nationwide cohort study in Denmark
DISCUSSION: Most of the observed plasticity in late-onset dementia is associated with a risk decline across successive birth cohorts that is independent of improvements in traditional risk factors.PMID:34569688 | DOI:10.1002/alz.12469

Sexual assault and white matter hyperintensities among midlife women
AbstractTraumatic experiences have been linked to poor mental and physical health. However, there has been little examination of their relationship to neuroimaging markers of cerebrovascular risk. White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are markers of brain small vessel disease. WMHs can be detected decades before the onset of dementia and other disorders and can serve as early markers for these brain disorders. We tested whether traumatic experiences were associated with brain WMH volume among midlife women. In the MsBrain study, 145 women (mean age  = 59 years) without cardiovascular disease, stroke, or dementia were r...

Book-Oriented Environment in Childhood and Current Cognitive Performance among Old-Aged Europeans
CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that early-life book-oriented environment may be important in shaping cognitive aging.PMID:34515091 | DOI:10.1159/000518129

Preliminary validation of the apraxia battery for adults-second edition (ABA-2) in Greek patients with dementia
ConclusionABA-2 is a valid, reliable and sensitive battery to differentiate demented patients from healthy individuals in the Greek population. We propose the modification of ABA-2 to a 5-subtest tool, to be administered as a bed-side test.

IJERPH, Vol. 18, Pages 8962: Current Update on the Clinical Utility of MMSE and MoCA for Stroke Patients in Asia: A Systematic Review
Conclusion: Clinicians in Asia are strongly recommended to consider the education level of stroke patients when interpreting the results of the MMSE and MoCA. Further studies in other Asian countries are needed to understand their clinical value in stroke settings.

Resistance to developing brain pathology due to vascular risk factors: the role of educational attainment
We examined if education contributes to brain resistance by studying its influence on the association between vascular risk factors and brain pathology. In 4111 stroke-free and dementia-free community-dwelling participants (62.9 ± 10.7 years), we explored the association between vascular risk factors (hypertension and the Framingham Stroke Risk Profile [FRSP]) and imaging markers of brain pathology (markers of cerebral small vessel disease and brain volumetry), stratified by educational attainment level. Associations of hypertension and FSRP with markers of brain pathology were not significantly different between levels o...

High Neutrophil –Lymphocyte Ratio Predicts Post-stroke Cognitive Impairment in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients
Conclusions: NLR in the acute stage of ischemic stroke was independently associated with PSCI at 3 months after stroke, and high NLR was specifically associated with cognitive dysfunction in the memory and visuospatial domains. Thus, systemic inflammation may be a modifiable risk factor that may influence cognitive outcomes after stroke.

426 prevalence of, and risk factors for, dementia in adult outpatient referrals to a regional referral hospital in arusha, tanzania
ConclusionsThe prevalence of dementia in this population is lower than previously reported community-based rates in Tanzania, and similar to those in high-income countries. This is the first time the association between uncorrected visual impairment and dementia has been reported in SSA. Other associations identified are in keeping with previous literature. Further research on the management of dementia and its risk factors, and the support and education of carers and patients in east African populations is required.

Age and Life-Sustaining Treatment Preferences in Parkinson Disease
Conclusions Advancing age in PD may correlate with paradoxically more aggressive goals as it relates to life-sustaining treatment preferences including cardiopulmonary resuscitation. This may reflect a response to heightened concern among older adults with PD about the potential for compromised autonomy in the setting of aging.

Trail Making Test Normative Data for the German Older Population
CONCLUSIONS: For TMT-A, TMT-B, and B - A, the narrow age categorization and distinction between three educational levels proved meaningful. The 300 s limit for the TMT-B impedes the identification of thresholds for very low performance in this age group and needs reconsideration.PMID:34009235 | DOI:10.1093/arclin/acab027
