What Sub-Saharan African Nations Can Teach the U.S. About Black Maternal Health
While poor maternal outcomes among Black women in the U.S. is not new, improving it is imperative. U.S. policymakers can look to sub-Saharan Africa for guidance on reversing this trend. Credit: Ernest Ankomah/IPSBy Ifeanyi NsoforABUJA, Jun 2 2023 (IPS) New research shows that Black mothers in the United States disproportionately live in counties with higher maternal vulnerability and face greater risk of preterm death for the fetus, greater risk of low birth weight for a baby, and a higher number of maternal deaths. While poor maternal outcomes among Black women in the U.S. is not new, improving it is imperative. U.S. poli...

Idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis and stroke secondary to protein C deficiency in a child with Down syndrome: a case report
ConclusionIdiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis remains a severe disease, which is rarely associated with Down syndrome. The management of this disease in Down syndrome patients is difficult, especially when associated with an ischemic stroke secondary to protein C deficiency.

Predictive factors of mechanical ventilation among critically ill adults with COVID-19
Conclusion: Among ICU admitted patients, comorbidities, neurological symptoms, elevated rate of D-dimer and CRP and important radiological damage are the main risk factors for requiring IMV.

A potential oral microbiome signature associated with coronary artery disease in Tunisia
In conclusion, the abundance of Eikenella in oral coronary patient samples compared to controls could be a prominent pathological indicator for the development of CAD.PMID:35695679 | DOI:10.1042/BSR20220583

Thromboembolic events in COVID-19 patients : A Tunisian case series study
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can lead to systemic coagulation activation and thrombotic complications(TC), which may lead to fatal outcomes if not diagnosed and managed appropriately. We aimed to report the incidence and characteristics of venous and arterial thrombotic complications(TC) in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and to investigate the predictive factors of their occurrence.A retrospective study including 200 patients with COVID-19 confirmed by a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction test, admitted between March 2020 and January 2021 in the pulmonary departement B at Abderrahman Mami Hospi...

Smoking cessation adherence:recurrent cardiovascular events after five years of first manifestation
ConclusionsSmoking cessation after a first cardiovascular event should be a key objective for both patients and physicians to reduce the risk for recurrent vascular events. More efforts are needed to maintain smoking cessation in patients at very high cardiovascular risk.Key messagesSmoking cessation consultation can increase adherence to smoking cessation and helps in reducing the excess risk of recurrent cardiovascular events.Smoking is highly addictive and cessation can be extremely difficult, even after a life-threatening vascular event.

Predictors of Quality of Life in Stroke Survivors: A 1-year Follow-Up Study of a Tunisian Sample
Stroke survivors often have impaired quality of live (QOL). There is very little information about the determining factors of QOL of stroke survivors in developing countries managed in public health structures with limited access to state of the art treatments.

MTHFR (C677T, A1298C), FV Leiden polymorphisms, and the prothrombin G20210A mutation in arterial ischemic stroke among young tunisian adults
In conclusion, our study confi rmed the involvement of MTHFR polymorphisms as AIS’s important risk factors. The existence of FVL polymorphism or prothrombin G20210A mutation alone doesn’t correlate with the occurrence of stroke. We assume that the presence of both MTHFR and FVL polymorphisms has a synergistic effect and incre ased the risk of the AIS.

Comparing Strategies to Prevent Stroke and Ischemic Heart Disease in the Tunisian Population: Markov Modeling Approach Using a Comprehensive Sensitivity Analysis Algorithm.
Conclusions: The primary prevention of cardiovascular disease via a reduction in dietary salt consumption appeared much more effective than secondary or tertiary prevention approaches. Our simple but comprehensive model offers a potentially attractive methodological approach that might now be extended and replicated in other contexts and populations. Mortality of diabetic on chronic dialysis in Tunisia.
This study aims to specify the epidemio-logical, clinical, and biological characteristics of diabetic disease, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and comorbidities at the initiation of HD and investigate factors associated with mortality during the dialysis period. We retrospectively analyzed the outcome of diabetic patients who were initiated on HD from 2007 to 2012 at the Rabta Hospital of Tunis. During the follow-up period, all morbid events and deaths were recorded. Univariate analysis and multivariate analysis were performed to identify risk factors associated with mortality in our population. The study population included...

Endocrine Disruptors and Health Effects in Africa: A Call for Action
Conclusion: To address the many challenges posed by EDCs, we argue that Africans should take the lead in prioritization and evaluation of environmental hazards, including EDCs. We recommend the institution of education and training programs for chemical users, adoption of the precautionary principle, establishment of biomonitoring programs, and funding of community-based epidemiology and wildlife research programs led and funded by African institutes and private companies. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP1774 Received: 16 February 2017 Revised: 22 May 2017 Accepted: 24 May 2017 Published: 22 August 2017 Address correspond...
