Characterization of Cardiac Dysfunction by Echocardiography in Early Severe Acute Pancreatitis
Conclusions: Two thirds of patients with early SAP and hypotension had cardiac dysfunction, which was most commonly diastolic dysfunction. A better understanding of the nature of cardiac dysfunction in this setting may allow more accurate diagnosis, prognostication, and management.

Isolated Internal Carotid Artery Thrombus and Cerebral Infarction in a Patient with Necrotizing Pancreatitis: Case Report
We report a case of a patient presenting with right arm weakness, slurred speech, and altered mental status in the setting of acute on chronic pancreatitis. The patient was found to have scattered left cerebral hemisphere cortical infarctions, and catheter angiography confirmed the presence of intraluminal left ICA thrombus, with no evidence of atherosclerotic disease in the cervical or intracranial vasculature.

Ahead of Shire buyout, Takeda sells joint venture and reportedly plans $20B bond deal
Japanese pharmaceutical giant Takeda is boosting its finances ahead of its costly acquisition of Shire plc, selling its stake in a Chinese joint venture for $280 million and reportedly planning a record $20 billion bond deal. Takeda announced Monday that it had sold its majority stake in a joint venture called Guangdong Techpool Bio-Pharma Co., which sells drugs for pancreatitis and stroke. The move is part of a broader effort by Takeda to ditch assets outside of its core focus areas, including…

Mandatory criteria for the application of variability-based parameters of fluid responsiveness: a prospective study in different groups of ICU patients.
CONCLUSIONS: The applicability of SVV in a predominantly medical ICU is only about 25%-35%. The prevalence of both mandatory criteria decreases over time during the ICU stay. Furthermore, the applicability is particularly low in patients with acute pancreatitis and liver failure. PMID: 29971990 [PubMed - in process]

Complications of Solid Organ Transplantation
Despite improvements in overall graft function and patient survival rates after solid organ transplantation, complications can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. Cardiovascular complications include heart failure, arrhythmias leading to sudden death, hypertension, left ventricular hypertrophy, and allograft vasculopathy in heart transplantation. Neurologic complications include stroke, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, infections, neuromuscular disease, seizure disorders, and neoplastic disease. Acute kidney injury occurs from immunosuppression with calcineurin inhibitors or as a result of graft failu...

Medical Conditions Among Survivors of Adolescent and Young Adult Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL), Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)
Conclusion: This study found that sociodemographic factors were associated with the risk of developing medical conditions in AYA NHL, ALL and AML survivors. As expected, the risk of medical conditions varied by cancer type and treatment, with those undergoing SCT having a higher risk of medical conditions regardless of cancer type. NHL and ALL survivors who were uninsured or publicly insured were at a consistently higher risk of developing medical conditions, as were Hispanic ALL survivors and Black AML survivors. Our findings highlight the higher burden of medical conditions in subgroups of cancer survivors that may relat...

Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance - Patient Characteristics and Referral Patterns
ConclusionMGUS is often incidentally detected as part of a work up for other medical conditions, and our results reveal that there is a variety of reasons for which monoclonal testing is performed. With recent developments in our understanding of the significance of monoclonal gammopathy and its association with certain renal and organ damage (Fermand et al., 2018; Leung et al., 2012), there may be a change in how the paraproteinemia investigations are utilized by clinicians in different disciplines. It will be important to recognize and establish appropriate indications for testing. Furthermore, MGUS patients present with...

Plant-Derived Alkaloids: The Promising Disease-Modifying Agents for Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Conclusion This paper summarizes the current findings regarding the anti-colitis activity of plant-derived alkaloids and shows how these alkaloids exhibit significant and beneficial effects in alleviating colonic inflammation. These natural alkaloids are not only promising agents for IBD treatment but are also components for developing new wonder drugs. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms or toxicological evaluation of most plant-derived alkaloids still require much scientific research, and their actual efficacies for IBD patients have not been verified well in field research. Thus, further clinical trials to elu...

Challenge to the Intestinal Mucosa During Sepsis
Conclusion The impact of sepsis on the gut is manifold, e.g., sepsis mediated alteration of the gut-blood barrier and increase in the intestinal permeability, which may correlate with the phenomena of bacterial translocation and lymphatic activation (“toxic-lymph”). Systemic consequences of sepsis are widespread and concern to the coagulative system, the microbiome as well as enzymes, such as pancreatic proteases, MMPs and IAPs. Nevertheless, the therapeutic approaches for modulating the mucosal immune system are still rarely effective in daily routine. Recent published studies showing that treatment with ...

The diagnostic and prognostic value of red cell distribution width in cardiovascular disease; current status and prospective
AbstractThe red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is an index of the heterogeneity of circulating red blood cell size, which along with other standard complete blood count (CBC) parameters are used to identify hematological system diseases. Besides hematological disorders, several clinical studies have shown that an increased in the RDW may be associated with other diseases including acute pancreatitis, chronic kidney disease, gastrointestinal disorders, cancer, and of special interest in this review, cardiovascular disease (CVD). The diagnostic and prognostic value of RDW in different CVD (acute coronary syndrome, ische...
