A suggested shared aetiology of dementia - a colocalization study
Neurobiol Aging. 2022 May 13;117:71-82. doi: 10.1016/j.neurobiolaging.2022.05.005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIdentification of shared causal genes between dementia and its related clinical outcomes can help understand shared aetiology and multimorbidity surrounding dementia. We performed the HyPrColoc colocalization analysis to detect possible shared causal genes between dementia or Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 5 selected traits: stroke, diabetes, atherosclerosis, cholesterol level, and alcohol consumption within 601 dementia or AD associated genetic regions using summary results of the UK Biobank genome-wide associati...

188 Structural differences in access to neurological healthcare in Northern Ireland: a neurodisparity index
Disparities in management of neurological patients should be minimal in a universal healthcare system. Northern Ireland has one neuroscience centre but no neurology centres. We have devised an easily- applied neurodisparity index (NDI) to measure population equity of neurological healthcare. NDI=number of patients managed per 105 population per Trust/number of patients managed per 105 population of the tertiary centre Trust. NDIs <0.75 and >1.25 were arbitrarily designated as neurodisparities. NDIs were calculated between 2013–2016 for intravenous thrombolysis (eight centres) or mechanical thrombectomy (one cen...

Experiences of individuals with multiple sclerosis and stroke using transcutaneous foot drop electrical stimulators: a systematic review and meta-synthesis of qualitative studies
CONCLUSIONS: We recommend that the outcomes to continued use of foot drop electrical stimulators are carefully considered against the barriers. Our conceptual model may be useful to guide clinical conversations around the possible use of FES for managing foot drop in people with multiple sclerosis and stroke.Implications for rehabilitationThe key outcomes to foot drop electrical stimulator use were enhanced walking ability, improved independence and confidence, and enhanced social participation. The main barriers to foot drop electrical stimulator use were device aesthetics, usability challenges, trustworthiness of device i...

Stroke Recovery During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Position Paper on Recommendations for Rehabilitation
Arch Phys Med Rehabil. 2022 May 6:S0003-9993(22)00364-1. doi: 10.1016/j.apmr.2022.04.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHealthcare delivery shifted and adapted with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus 2 (CoV-2). Stroke care was negatively impacted across the care continuum and may lead to poor community living outcomes in those who survived a stroke during the ongoing pandemic. For instance, delays in seeking care, changes in length of stays, and shifts in discharge patterns were observed during the pandemic. Those seeking care were young...

Visceral fat: Avoid microwavable popcorn, vegetable oils and baked goods to burn belly fat
VISCERAL fat puts a person at high risk of heart disease, Alzheimer's, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and high cholesterol. Reading food labels is crucial as many products contain shocking amounts of trans fats which directly impacts this type of fat.

Trait Anger, Hostility, and the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes and Diabetes-Related Complications: A Systematic Review of Longitudinal Studies
CONCLUSION: Based on the available longitudinal evidence, trait anger and hostility are associated with an increased risk of diabetes. Longitudinal studies are needed to investigate the association between trait-anger or hostility and the risk of diabetes-related complications.PMID:35352665 | DOI:10.2174/1573399818666220329185229

Biomarkers for the Early Diagnosis of Sepsis in Burns: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Conclusions: The most widely studied biomarkers are poorly predictive for sepsis in burns patients. Brain natriuretic peptide, stroke volume index, TNF-alpha, and cell-free DNA showed promise in single studies and should be further evaluated. A standardized approach to the evaluation of diagnostic markers (including time of sampling, cut-offs, and outcomes) would be useful.

Patient-Led Mass Screening for Atrial Fibrillation in the Older Population Using Handheld Electrocardiographic Devices Integrated With a Clinician-Coordinated Remote Central Monitoring System: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial and Process Evaluation
CONCLUSIONS: By incorporating an integrated health care approach involving patient empowerment, centralized clinician-coordinated ECG monitoring, and facilitation of primary care and specialist services, it is possible to diagnose and treat AF early to reduce stroke risk. This study will provide new information on how to implement AF screening using digital health technology practicably and feasibly for older and frail populations residing in the community.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry ACTRN12621000184875; https://www.anzctr.org.au/Trial/Registration/TrialReview.aspx?id=380877.INTERNAT...

Assessing Staff's and Stroke Patients' Experiences in 8 Hospitals in Greece: Results from a Prospective Multi-Center Study ("SUN4Patients")
CONCLUSIONS: Health policy planners and decision-makers must take into consideration the results of such self-reported measures to establish innovative techniques to accomplish goals such as staff-specialization, continuous training and applying formal frameworks for efficient cooperation amongst different disciplines.PMID:35062174 | DOI:10.3233/SHTI210941
