Atopic dermatitis and risk of hypertension, type-2 diabetes, myocardial infarction and stroke in a cross-sectional analysis from the Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow Project.
CONCLUSIONS: We did not find evidence of a positive association between AD and subsequent hypertension, T2D, MI or stroke; AD was inversely associated with these outcomes in our study. Given our findings and the conflicting literature, AD is likely not a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. Individual and Joint Effects of Early-Life Ambient PM2.5 Exposure and Maternal Prepregnancy Obesity on Childhood Overweight or Obesity
Conclusions: In the present study, we observed that early life exposure to PM2.5 may play an important role in the early life origins of COWO and may increase the risk of COWO in children of mothers who were overweight or obese before pregnancy beyond the risk that can be attributed to MPBMI alone. Our findings emphasize the clinical and public health policy relevance of early life PM2.5 exposure. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP261 Received: 29 March 2016 Revised: 08 August 2016 Accepted: 23 August 2016 Published: 14 June 2017 Address correspondence to X. 7 medtech stories we missed this week: June 2, 2017
[Photo from unsplash.com]From Implandata receiving CE Marking to Inolife eyeing up-listing, here are 7 medtech stories we missed this week but thought were still worth mentioning. 1. Dextera seeks expanded indications for MicroCutter 5/80 stapler Dextera Surgical announced in a June 1 press release that it has filed a 510(k) with the FDA for its MicroCutter 5/80 stapler. The company wants to expand the indications of the MicroCutter 5/80 for use in liver, pancreas, kidney and spleen surgeries. Currently, the staplers are used for transection and resection in multiple open minimally-invasive urologic, thoracic and pediatr...

Electrocardiographic Abnormalities and Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Type 1 Diabetes: The Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC) Study
CONCLUSIONS The presence of major ECG abnormalities is associated with an increased risk of CVD in patients with type 1 diabetes. This suggests a potential role for ECG screening in patients with type 1 diabetes to identify individuals at risk for CVD.

Path of translational discovery of urological complications of obesity and diabetes
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a prevalent chronic disease. Type 1 DM (T1DM) is a metabolic disorder that is characterized by hyperglycemia in the context of absolute lack of insulin, whereas type 2 DM (T2DM) is due to insulin resistance-related relative insulin deficiency. In comparison with T1DM, T2DM is more complex. The natural history of T2DM in most patients typically involves a course of obesity to impaired glucose tolerance, to insulin resistance, to hyperinsulinemia, to hyperglycemia, and finally to insulin deficiency. Obesity is a risk factor of T2DM. Diabetes causes some serious microvascular and macrovascular compli...

Range of Risk Factor Levels: Control, Mortality, and Cardiovascular Outcomes in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.
CONCLUSIONS: A steep-graded association exists between decreasing number of cardiovascular risk factors at target and major adverse cardiovascular outcomes among patients with T1DM. However, risks for all outcomes were numerically higher for patients with T1DM compared with controls, even when all risk factors were at target, with risk for acute myocardial infarction and heart failure hospitalization statistically significantly higher. An Unusual Cause of Hyperglycemia
BY CHRISTINE SHEELER; SEEMA ELAHI, MDA 46-year-old man presented to the ED with multiple complaints, including fatigue and dizziness for one day. His primary care physician had diagnosed him with diabetes the previous day, and had prescribed him an oral hypoglycemic as well as insulin. Neither, however, was started at the time of presentation. The patient had a medical history significant for HIV, with his most recent CD4 count above 500, and bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, which had progressively worsened since its initial onset in his 20s. His physical exam was unremarkable except for decreased hearing bilateral...

Daily diet of fresh fruit linked to lower diabetes risk
Conclusion The study findings – that eating fresh fruit every day does not raise the risk of diabetes, and may reduce it – are reassuring and in line with dietary advice in the UK. It's also helpful to see evidence that people who already have diabetes are likely to benefit from fresh fruit as well, because there has not been much research into fruit-eating for people with diabetes. However, it's a step too far to say that fresh fruit prevents diabetes or diabetes complications. Fresh fruit is just one part of a healthy diet, and diet is just one of the things that may affect someone's risk of getting diabetes. This ty...

Increased frequency of multiple sclerosis among patients with bullous pemphigoid: a population ‐based cohort study on comorbidities anchored around the diagnosis of bullous pemphigoid
ConclusionsWe discovered a significantly increased frequency of MS among patients with BP. At the time of diagnosis, patients with BP had an excessive number of comorbidities and an increased mortality rate over the following years.

Exploring the Link Between Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and inflammation-Related Medical Conditions: An Epidemiological Examination
This study examined the relation between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and inflammation-related medical conditions using data from the 2013 –2014 New York City Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Using a representative sample of 1,527 residents in New York City, the association between PTSD and 17 inflammation-related medical conditions were examined. Bivariate and multivariable analyses were conducted, adjusting for demographic characteristics and lifetime depression. PTSD was strongly associated with increased odds for hypercholesterolemia, insulin resistance, angina, heart attack, and emphysema with the gr...

The effectiveness and safety of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition or receptor blockade in vascular diseases in patients with hemodialysis
Abstract: Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who are on hemodialysis have high risk of vascular diseases. Our study sought to examine whether angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) or angiotensin type 1 receptor blockers (ARBs) could reduce the frequencies of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events in patients receiving hemodialysis using the medication possession ratio (MPR) method of analysis. This retrospective cohort study identified cases of ESRD with dialysis from the National Health Insurance Research Database between 1999 and 2006, and used Cox-regression methods to evaluate risk of poor outc...

Association between diabetes mellitus and incidence and case ‐fatality after stroke due to intracerebral haemorrhage: a retrospective population‐based cohort study
Abstract We investigated the associations between types of diabetes and ICH incidence and case‐fatality after ICH, in a retrospective cohort study of people aged 40–89 years in Scotland 2004–2013 using linkage of population‐based records of diagnosed diabetes, hospital discharges and deaths. We calculated ICH incidence and 30‐day case‐fatality after hospital admission for ICH and their relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) for people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes compared to people without diabetes adjusting for age, sex and socio‐economic status (SES). There were 77, 1275 and 9778 inciden...

Cardiac Outcomes After Ischemic Stroke or TIA: Effects of Pioglitazone in Patients with Insulin Resistance Without Diabetes.
Conclusions -Among patients with insulin resistance without diabetes, pioglitazone reduced the risk for acute coronary syndromes after a recent cerebrovascular event. Pioglitazone appeared to have its most prominent effect in preventing spontaneous type 1 MI's.
