Sex Difference of Radiation Response in Occupational and Accidental Exposure
Conclusion and Outlook This review summarizes the data from major human studies on the health risks of radiation exposure and shows that sex can potentially influence the prolonged response to radiation exposure (Figure 1 and Tables 1, 2). These data suggest that long-term radiosensitivity in females is higher than that in males who receive a comparable dose of radiation. Our analysis of the literature agrees with the conclusions of the recent report on the Biological effects of ionizing radiation (BEIR VII) published in 2006 by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), United States (National Research Council, 2006). The B...

Association between High Platelet Reactivity Following Dual Antiplatelet Therapy and Ischemic Events in Japanese Patients with Coronary Artery Disease Undergoing Stent Implantation.
CONCLUSION: HTPR was significantly associated with adverse ischemic outcomes at 1 year after PCI in Japanese patients receiving maintenance DAPT, indicating its potential as a prognostic indicator of clinical outcomes in this high-risk patient population. Worsening renal function, adverse clinical events, and major determinants for changes of renal function in patients with atrial fibrillation: a Japanese multicenter registry substudy.
Conclusion: Age ≥75 years, body weight ≤50 kg, a history of heart failure, and initially preserved renal function appear to promote renal dysfunction in patients with AF, but a history of AF ablation seems to have a favorable effect. Worsening renal function seems to increase AF patients' risk of adverse clinical events. Renal function can decline quickly; thus, early intervention including AF ablation is warranted. Contemporary Antiplatelet Therapy and Clinical Outcomes of Japanese Patients With Acute Myocardial Infarction - Results From the Prospective Japan Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry (JAMIR).
CONCLUSIONS: The present real-world database of the JAMIR demonstrated that the potent P2Y12-inhibitor prasugrel showed comparable rates of 1-year ischemic events to clopidogrel, but the risk of bleeding was lower with prasugrel than with clopidogrel. Which Patients Are Candidates for Minimally Invasive Mitral Valve Surgery? - Establishment of Risk Calculators Using National Clinical Database.
CONCLUSIONS: We developed risk calculator formulas using risk factors associated with both operative mortality and composite outcome. The present risk calculator formula is useful for patient selection and may influence future applications for this procedure. PMID: 31257312 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Major cardiovascular and bleeding events with long-term use of aspirin in patients with prior cardiovascular diseases: 1-year follow-up results from the Management of Aspirin-induced Gastrointestinal Complications (MAGIC) study
This study was conducted to clarify CV and bleeding events in Japanese aspirin users with a history of CV diseases. This study was a prospective, nationwide, multicenter cooperative registry of Japanese patients with CV diseases at risk of thromboembolism who were taking aspirin (75–325 mg) for at least 1 year. We observed major CV and bleeding events during follow-up. Patients with history of ischemic stroke (IS), transient ischemic attack (TIA), coronary artery disease (CAD), atrial fibrillation (AF), and venous thromboembolism (VTE) were included and analyzed in this sutdy. CV events included IS, TIA, CAD, CV death,...

Use of proton pump inhibitors is associated with an increase in adverse cardiovascular events in patients with hemodialysis: Insight from the kids registry.
CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that the use of PPIs in patients with maintenance hemodialysis might increase mortality and cardiovascular events without decreasing the risk of bleeding. Therefore, it should always be analyzed if a patient truly needs PPIs. PMID: 31735546 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Risk factors for major bleeding and clinically relevant non-major bleeding in Japanese patients treated with edoxaban.
In this study, we investigated the risk factors for bleeding in Japanese patients receiving edoxaban. A retrospective review of the records of 198 patients who received 30 mg/day edoxaban in our hospital between April 2015 and March 2017 was performed. Subsequently, these patients were followed up to 1 year. Seven (3.5%) and 22 (11.1%) patients developed major bleeding and clinically relevant bleeding, respectively. In the univariate Cox regression analyses, low baseline hemoglobin levels (p = 0.002) and low baseline creatinine clearance (p = 0.020) were significantly associated with major bleeding. Multivariate Cox regre...

Age-Related Differences in the Clinical Characteristics and Treatment of Elderly Patients With Atrial Fibrillation in Japan - Insight From the ANAFIE (All Nippon AF In Elderly) Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: Permanent/persistent AF, comorbidities, and cardiovascular and bleeding risk all increased significantly with age. Furthermore, use of warfarin and apixaban increased with age, accompanied by a decrease in other oral anticoagulant usage. PMID: 31969518 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clinical implications of assessment of apixaban levels in elderly atrial fibrillation patients: J-ELD AF registry sub-cohort analysis
ConclusionsA high trough apixaban level in patients indicated for standard dose was not associated with adverse events, while a high apixaban level in patients indicated for a reduced dose was associated with bleeding requiring hospitalization.

Meta-analysis of efficacy and safety of new oral anticoagulants compared with warfarin in Japanese patients undergoing catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation
ConclusionsIn Japanese NVAF patients undergoing CA, NOACs have similar effects to warfarin in the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism. Moreover, NOACs were associated with a lower incidence of bleeding complications.
