Do brachycephaly and nose size predict the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)? A sample-based geometric morphometric analysis of craniofacial variation in relation to OSA syndrome and the role of confounding factors
J Sleep Res. 2022 Dec 29:e13801. doi: 10.1111/jsr.13801. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTObstructive sleep apnea is a common disorder that leads to sleep fragmentation and is potentially bidirectionally related to a variety of comorbidities, including an increased risk of heart failure and stroke. It is often considered a consequence of anatomical abnormalities, especially in the head and neck, but its pathophysiology is likely to be multifactorial in origin. With geometric morphometrics, and a large sample of adults from the Study for Health in Pomerania, we explore the association of craniofacial morphology to the apnea-hy...

Normal and excessive muscle sympathetic nerve activity in heart failure: implications for future trials of therapeutic autonomic modulation
ConclusionBurst frequency and incidence exceeded normative values in only ~53% and ~33% of patients. Such diversity encourages selective deployment of sympatho-modulatory therapies. Clinical characteristics can highlight individuals who may benefit from future personalized interventions targeting pathological sympathetic activation.

Disturbed Sleep is Not Good for the Heart: A Narrative Review
Curr Cardiol Rev. 2022 Nov 30. doi: 10.2174/1573403X19666221130100141. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSleep-related breathing disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and central sleep apnea (CSA), have a major impact on cardiovascular function. It has shown an association with hypertension, coronary artery disease, cardiac arrhythmias, sudden cardiac death, and congestive heart failure (CHF). This review focuses on highlighting the relationship between sleep apnea and CHF. We discuss the underlying pathophysiology which involves the mechanical, neurohormonal, and inflammatory mechanisms; in addition, the similari...

Comorbidities in patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea syndrome (OSAS) in Reunion Island.
Conclusion: Morbid obesity, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and respiratory illness are a predictor of severe OSAS in our patients especially snorers.

Hospitalizations in OSA patients
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with cardiovascular comorbidities and other chronic diseases, accounting for long-term morbidity, with elevated symptomatic burden and hospitalizations. We aim to study the hospitalizations' causes in OSA patients and its relation to OSA severity and PAP therapy adhesion. This is a retrospective study including 281 hospitalizations corresponding to 200 OSA patients during 2019. Mean age 65 years, 67% were males, and 43,5% (n=87) had severe OSA; 85% patients under PAP; 60,4% (n=102) good adherent patients. Overlap with obesity hypoventilation syndrome (n=7) and COPD (n=48) was noti...

Development of a new non invasive prognostic stroke scale (NIPSS) including triage elements for sleep apnea and peripheral artery disease
Although sleep apnea and peripheral artery disease are prognostic factors for stroke, their added benefit in the acute stage to further prognosticate strokes has not been evaluated.

Chronic Intermittent Hypoxia Worsens Brain Damage and Sensorimotor Behavioral Abnormalities after Ischemic Stroke: Effect on Autonomic Nervous Activity and Sleep Patterns
CONCLUSION: Autonomic activity and sleep patterns affected by IH were correlated with increased cerebral infarction and poor sensorimotor behavior after MCAO.PMID:36370768 | DOI:10.1016/j.brainres.2022.148159

Physical activity for obstructive sleep apnea after stroke? A pilot study assessing the contribution of body fluids
CONCLUSION: An acute bout of physical activity reduced OSA classification based on AHI (from moderate to mild) and sleep fragmentation. Our results provide preliminary evidence of a possible link between physical activity in patients after stroke as an intervention to counteract OSA severity and improve sleep.PMID:36327028 | DOI:10.1007/s11325-022-02735-7
