Sleep-related rhythmic movement disorder in adults - A systematic review with a case report
J Sleep Res. 2023 Jul 6:e13985. doi: 10.1111/jsr.13985. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSleep-related rhythmic movement disorder is characterised by stereotyped and repetitive rhythmic movements involving large muscle groups during sleep with frequencies between 0.5 and 2 Hz. Most of the published studies on sleep-related rhythmic movement disorder have focussed on children. Therefore, we performed a systematic review on this topic focussing on the adult population. The review is followed by a case report. The review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 ...

Sex Differences in 90-Day Functional Outcomes for Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Conclusions Males were found to have two times higher risk for developing poor functional outcomes at 90 days. This may be due to more severe oxygen desaturation, increased susceptibility to oxidative stress, and greater frequency of full airway obstruction in males. Greater emphasis on early diagnosis and treatment of OSA may be necessary to reduce the disproportionate incidence of poor functional outcomes, particularly among apneic male stroke survivors.PMID:37388591 | PMC:PMC10306317 | DOI:10.7759/cureus.39652

Study of the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in cerebral infarction patients
ConclusionObstructive sleep apnea Syndrome is a factor in the prognosis of cerebral infarction as well as cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension. Thus, understanding the risk of stroke in people with sleep apnea is necessary and working with a doctor to diagnose and treat sleep apnea is important.

Functional recovery after ischemic stroke: Impact of different sleep health parameters
J Sleep Res. 2023 Jun 20:e13964. doi: 10.1111/jsr.13964. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSleep disturbances after ischaemic stroke include alterations of sleep architecture, obstructive sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, daytime sleepiness and insomnia. Our aim was to explore their impacts on functional outcomes at month 3 after stroke, and to assess the benefit of continuous positive airway pressure in patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea. Ninety patients with supra-tentorial ischaemic stroke underwent clinical screening for sleep disorders and polysomnography at day 15 ± 4 after stroke in a multisite study. Pati...

Effect of different ventilation modalities on the early prognosis of patients with sleep apnea after acute ischemic stroke –––protocol for a prospective, open-label and randomised controlled trial
Sleep apnea is highly prevalent after acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and has increased stroke-related mortality and morbidity. The conventional sleep apnea treatment is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) ...

Older Age is Associated with Positional Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a highly prevalent disease affecting almost 1 billion people worldwide (1), and its prevalence continues to rise with increasing age and rates of obesity (2,3). Untreated OSA has been regarded as a strong risk factor for stroke(4), myocardial infarction and hypertension(5), diabetes mellitus(6), motor vehicle accidents (7), and cognitive impairment in the elderly population (8). Therapies for OSA include continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), oral devices and hypoglossal nerve stimulation (9).

Effect of obstructive sleep apnea on prognosis in patients with acute coronary syndromes with varying numbers of standard modifiable risk factors: insight from the OSA-ACS study
ConclusionsIn hospitalized ACS patients, OSA is associated with an increased risk of MACCE and ischemia-driven revascularization among patients with 3 –4 SMuRFs. Therefore, screening for OSA should be emphasized in ACS patients with 3–4 SMuRFs, and intervention trials should be prioritized in these high-risk patients.

Mild-to-moderate obstructive sleep apnea and mortality risk in a general population sample: The modifying effect of age and cardiovascular/cerebrovascular comorbidity
We examined the association between mmOSA and all-cause mortality and the modifying effect of age and CBVD. A total of 1681 adults 20-88 years old from the Penn State Adult Cohort (PSAC) (41.9% male) were followed up for 20.1 ± 6.2 years for all-cause mortality. Mild and moderate OSA were defined as an apnea/hypopnea index (AHI) 5-14.9 and 15-29.9 events/hour, respectively. CBVD was defined as a report of a physician diagnosis or treatment for heart disease and/or stroke. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate all-cause mortality adjusted for confounders. All-cause mortality risk was significantl...
