Association between REM-related mild obstructive sleep apnea and common cardiometabolic diseases
ConclusionCommon CMDs, particularly HT, tend to show an association with REM-OSA in patients with  mild OSA, but this association did not reach statistically significant levels.

Effects of inspiratory muscle training on the severity of obstructive sleep apnea in individuals after stroke: a protocol for a randomized controlled trial
This study will be a randomized controlled trial with blinded assessors. Forty individuals after stroke will randomized to two groups. For 5 weeks, both groups will participate in the rehabilitation program activities, including aerobic exercise, resistance training, and educational class when they will receive guidance on the behavioral management of OSA. The experimental group will also perform high-intensity IMT 5 times a week, for 5 weeks, consisting initially of five sets of five repetitions achieving 75% of the maximal inspiratory pressure, increasing one set each week, totaling nine sets at the end of training. The ...

Sleep apnea-COPD overlap syndrome is associated with larger left carotid atherosclerotic plaques
CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that the presence of OS in COPD patients is associated with larger left carotid atherosclerotic plaques, indicating that OS might be screened in all COPD patients to identify those with higher risk of stroke.PMID:37025690 | PMC:PMC10070750 | DOI:10.3389/fcvm.2023.1104377

Participation by patients from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in trial evidence supporting secondary stroke prevention guideline recommendations
CONCLUSIONS: Compared to their global burden of stroke, LMICs are underrepresented in key clinical trials used in formulating a prominent global stroke prevention guideline. While current therapeutic recommendations are likely applicable to practice settings throughout the world, greater involvement of patients from LMIC settings will enhance the contextual relevance and generalizability of recommendations to these disparate populations.PMID:37028264 | DOI:10.1016/j.jns.2023.120641

Your Sleep Can Affect Your Stroke Risk
THURSDAY, April 6, 2023 -- Sleep problems — from snoring to sleeping too much or too little — may be associated with elevated stroke risk, researchers say. Snorting during sleep, having poor quality of sleep and sleep apnea may also be linked...

Clinical outcomes of obstructive sleep apnea in patients with acute coronary syndrome in relation to hyperuricemia status
J Sleep Res. 2023 Apr 5:e13898. doi: 10.1111/jsr.13898. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe clinical outcome of obstructive sleep apnea in patients with acute coronary syndrome in relation to hyperuricemia is still unclear. We aimed to explore the clinical prognosis of obstructive sleep apnea in patients with acute coronary syndrome in relation to hyperuricemia status. This was a prospective cohort study. We included consecutively eligible patients with acute coronary syndrome who underwent cardiorespiratory polygraphy between June 2015 and January 2020. According to apnea-hypopnea index ≥ 15 events per hr and serum uric a...

Recent progress in patent foramen ovale and related neurological diseases: A narrative review
Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a common congenital cardiac abnormality when the opening of the interatrial septum is not closed in adulthood. This abnormality affects 25% of the general population. With the development of precision medicine, an increasing number of clinical studies have reported that PFO is closely related to various neurological diseases such as stroke, migraine, obstructive sleep apnea, and decompression syndrome. It has also been suggested that PFO closure could be effective for preventing and treating these neurological diseases. Therefore, increasing attention has been given to the prevention, diagnosi...

Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Stroke: Determining the Mechanisms Behind their Association and Treatment Options
Transl Stroke Res. 2023 Mar 16. doi: 10.1007/s12975-023-01123-x. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSleep-disordered breathing (SDB) can be a sequela of stroke caused by vascular injury to vital respiratory centers, cerebral edema, and increased intracranial pressure of space-occupying lesions. Likewise, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) contributes to increased stroke risk through local mechanisms such as impaired ischemic cerebrovascular response and systemic effects such as promoting atherosclerosis, hypercoagulability, cardiac arrhythmias, vascular-endothelial dysfunction, and metabolic syndrome. The impact of OSA on stroke out...
