Hacking The Nervous System
(Photo: © Job Boot) One nerve connects your vital organs, sensing and shaping your health. If we learn to control it, the future of medicine will be electric. When Maria Vrind, a former gymnast from Volendam in the Netherlands, found that the only way she could put her socks on in the morning was to lie on her back with her feet in the air, she had to accept that things had reached a crisis point. “I had become so stiff I couldn’t stand up,” she says. “It was a great shock because I’m such an active person.”It was 1993. Vrind was in her late 40s and working two jobs, athletics coach and a carer for disabled ...

Lower Extremity Proximal Muscle Function and Dyspnea in Older Persons
ConclusionPoor performance on a single chair stand was associated with an adjusted 85% greater likelihood of moderate to severe exertional dyspnea than normal performance. These results suggest that reduced proximal muscle function of the lower extremities is associated with moderate to severe exertional dyspnea, even after adjusting for multiple confounders.

Subcutaneous nodules are associated with cardiovascular events in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: results from a large US registry
The objective of this study is to examine the possibility of a relationship between subcutaneous nodules and “first ever” cardiovascular disease event, i.e., myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, or cardiovascular death in a large registry-cohort of patients with RA. Patient information was collected from the CORRONA registry from October 2001 to September 2011. A total of 26,042 patients with RA were studied for the presence or absence of subcutaneous nodules. Cox proportional hazards regression models were constructed to estimate the hazard ratios (HR) for CVD events in relation to subcutaneous nodules at baseline. Thr...

Dr. Sears Saves Hospital Patient?
Since I started practicing “telemedicine” at my Sears Institute for Anti-Aging Medicine — the response has been just incredible. Telemedicine is the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another via electronic communications to improve a patient’s health status. You can now have private consultations with me or my clinical team from the comfort of your own home — through a live video stream. Tele-patients use tele-health service to receive advice or treatment from another location. I’m delighted for all my new patients that have already registered to become “tele-patients” from acros...

Healing through music
The last time I had a mammogram, I got a big surprise — and it was a good one. A string quartet was playing just outside the doors of the breast imaging center, and my thoughts immediately shifted from “What are they going to find on the mammogram?” to “Is that Schubert, or Beethoven?” By the time my name was called, I had almost forgotten why I was there. The unexpected concert was the work of Holly Chartrand and Lorrie Kubicek, music therapists and co-coordinators of the Environmental Music Program at Massachusetts General Hospital. But bringing music to hospital corridors is just a sideline for music therapist...

Being happy 'won't help you live longer' survey finds
ConclusionThis large prospective study aimed to assess whether happiness or related measures of wellbeing are associated with risk of death, after allowing for the influence of the poor health and lifestyles of people who are unhappy. The study found poor health was linked with unhappiness in middle-aged women. However, after allowing for this association and adjusting for the influence of other factors that may be associated, such as smoking and poor socioeconomic status, happiness and related measures of wellbeing do not appear to have any direct effect on death. This suggests that, as has sometimes previously been specu...

Impact of nine chronic conditions for US adults aged 65 years and older: an application of a hybrid estimator of quality-adjusted life years throughout remainder of lifetime
Conclusions This study presents a QALY estimator for respondents in the NHANES-Linked Mortality File and demonstrates the utility of this method to other follow-up data. Continued application of our method would enable the burden of disease to be compared for a range of health conditions and risk factors in the ongoing effort to improve population health.

The Relationship of Cardiovascular Disease to Physical Functioning in Women Surviving to Age 80 and Above in the Womens Health Initiative
Conclusions: Older women with any CVD, and particularly women with congestive heart failure or peripheral arterial disease, reported significantly lower PF compared to women with no CVD. Regardless of CVD diagnosis, higher PF was strongly associated with a more active lifestyle and lower body mass index, suggesting potential intervention targets for more optimal aging.

Adjuvant-induced mono-arthritis potentiates cerebral hemorrhage in the spontaneously hypertensive rats
Publication date: Available online 21 February 2016 Source:Life Sciences Author(s): Amy Randell, Noriko Daneshtalab Aims Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), have a higher incidence of hypertension and stroke than the normal population. Currently there exists no animal model to study the pathogenic interactions of hemorrhagic stroke (HS) subsequent to chronic inflammation and hypertension. We have created and defined a hypertensive-mono-arthritic animal model who demonstrate gross signs of cerebral hemorrhage in presence of mono-arthritis. Main methods Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) were fed either a high s...

Prevalence of chronic non-communicable diseases and association with self-rated health: National Health Survey, 2013

The relative impact of chronic conditions and multimorbidity on health-related quality of life in Ontario long-stay home care clients
Conclusion Clinically important negative effects on HRQL were observed for clients with a previous diagnosis of stroke, osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis, or CHF, as well as with increasing levels of multimorbidity. Findings provide baseline preference-based HRQL scores for home care clients with different diagnoses and may be useful for identifying, targeting and evaluating care strategies toward populations with significant HRQL impairments.
