The role of Smad3 in the fibrotic phenotype in human vocal fold fibroblasts
ConclusionTransforming growth factor‐β1 stimulated profibrotic cell activities in our cell line and these actions were largely reduced with Smad3 knockdown. These data provide continued support for therapeutic targeting of Smad3 for vocal fold fibrosis because it appears to regulate the fibrotic phenotype. Level of EvidenceN/A. Laryngoscope, 2015

Epidermal growth factor receptor inhibition by anti‐CD147 therapy in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma
ConclusionInhibition and downregulation of CD147 in cutaneous SCC resulted in suppression of the malignant phenotype in vitro and in vivo, which may be mediated in part by an alteration in EGFR expression. As a result, CD147 may serve as a potential therapeutic target for advanced cutaneous SCC. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Head Neck, 2015

Increased Sensitivity to Noise-Induced Hearing Loss by Blockade of Endogenous PI3K/Akt Signaling
In conclusion, this study suggests that endogenous PI3K/Akt signaling is an intrinsic protective mechanism of the inner ear. Blockade of PI3K/Akt signaling pathways increases sensitivity to TTS noise-induced hearing loss.

Delphinidin Inhibits LPS-Induced MUC8 and MUC5B Expression Through Toll-like Receptor 4-Mediated ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK in Human Airway Epithelial Cells.
CONCLUSION: These results suggest that delphinidin attenuates LPS-induced MUC8 and MUC5B expression through the TLR4-mediated ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK signaling pathway in human airway epithelial cells. These findings indicated that delphinidin may be a therapeutic agent for control of inflammatory airway diseases. PMID: 25177436 [PubMed]

Osteopontin Promotes EZH2 Expression and Tumor Progression in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma
Objective: To evaluate the possible mechanism of osteopontin (OPN) in the tumor progression of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Methods: Twenty NPC specimens and 10 normal biopsy specimens were analyzed, and the expression of OPN and enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) was examined by immunohistochemical staining. Moreover, the expression of EZH2 in NPC cell lines was examined using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analysis in the presence of recombinant human (rh) OPN and specific inhibitors. NPC cell migration and invasion were evaluated using a transwell chamber in the presence...

Corticosteroid Regulates Epithelial Occludin Expression in Nasal Polyps through a MKP-1-Dependent Pathway
Objective: To evaluate the regulatory effect of corticosteroid on occludin expression in polyp tissues of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) patients and in vitro. Methods: Twenty CRSwNP patients were enrolled and subjected to prednisone (30 mg/day for 14 days). The expression of occludin in polyp tissues was examined before and after treatment using immunohistochemical staining and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Moreover, the expression of occludin in polyp-derived epithelial cells (PECs) and human bronchial epithelial cells (BECs) was examined using Western blot analysis in t...
