Sustained release of curcumin from fibrin matrix induces cancer cell death and immunomodulation.
This study describes the advantages of clinical-grade curcumin-incorporated fibrin matrix either in lyophilized off-the-shelf wafer or injectable hydrogel forms, as a biodegradable local delivery system. To produce the curcumin-fibrin wafer, used clinical-grade fibrin sealant in a modified composition. To fabricate wafer, we premixed the curcumin with either fibrinogen or thrombin, before clotting into a hydrogel. Sustained release of active curcumin from fibrin wafer, suspended in culture medium at 37 °C lasted for seven days. Upon premixing albumin with thrombin and subsequently adding curcumin into the mixture improved...

Evaluation of the Hemostatic Efficacy of Two Powdered Topical Absorbable Hemostats Using a Porcine Liver Abrasion Model of Mild to Moderate Bleeding.
CONCLUSION: Surgicel-P provided more effective and sustained hemostasis and faster TTH than Hemoblast-B. Surgicel-P represents a novel clinical alternative to provide adjunctive control of diffuse mild and moderate bleeding. Surgicel-P combines an ORC powder formulation and a delivery system in a device that is particularly useful for application on large surfaces and difficult-to-access anatomical locations where application of other forms of topical hemostats may be impractical. A novel self-assembling peptide for hemostasis during endoscopic submucosal dissection: a randomized controlled trial
Conclusions This study has demonstrated that Purastat is an effective hemostat that can reduce the need for heat therapy for bleeding during ESD. It may also have a role in improving post-resection wound healing. [...] © Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New YorkArticle in Thieme eJournals: Table of contents  |  Abstract  |  Full text

Targeting Biological Polyanions in Blood: Strategies towards the Design of Therapeutics.
Abstract In this review, we highlight well-described and emerging polyanions, and the way these molecules can be targeted in the design of potential therapeutics (synthetic and biologics) with applications in thrombosis and hemostasis. It is important to strike a balance between bleeding and clotting. In thrombosis, unwanted blood clots are formed in the lumen of a blood vessel, obstructing the flow of blood through the circulatory system. Over many years of research, several polyanionic biopolymers that can either impede (anticoagulant) or promote (procoagulant) blood clotting have been identified. Mediators impe...

Thermal Treatment Stimulus on Erythrocyte Compatibility and Hemostatic Behaviour of One-Dimensional Bioactive Nano-Structures.
This study identifies the role and significance of heat treatment parameters on blood compatibility and hemostatic performances. Bioactive nanomaterials step-annealed at 550 °C and 600 °C enhances the biocompatibility due to the liberation of nitrate content. This also develops the anisotropic structures such as needle-like and rod-like appearances that positively improve the erythrocyte compatibility. Different stable crystalline phases such as NaCaPO4 , Na2 Ca2 Si3 O9 and Na1.8 Ca1.1 Si6 O14 were observed for all the bioactive materials, while in the case of 800 °C phase transition of Na3 CaPSiO7 was perceived along w...

Ankaferd hemostat: from molecules to medicine.
ANKAFERD HEMOSTAT: FROM MOLECULES TO MEDICINE. Turk J Med Sci. 2020 Apr 14;: Authors: Çiftçiler R, Haznedaroglu IC Abstract Ankaferd hemostat (ABS; Ankaferd blood stopper®, Istanbul, Turkey) is a hemostatic agent having an impact on red blood cell-fibrinogen interactions. The hemostatic effect of ABS depends upon the quick promotion of a protein network, particularly fibrinogen gamma, in relation to the erythrocyte aggregation. The entire physiological process involves ABS-induced formation of the protein network by vital erythrocyte aggregation. Vital erythroid aggregation occurs with the spectrine...

Non-antibiotic prophylaxis in thyroid surgery. Experience of a single Institution and revision of literature.
CONCLUSIONS: Fever, neutrophilic leukocytosis and increased PCR cannot be assessed as predictive factors of infectious complication in thyroid surgery. The cutaneous antisepsis of the operative field with chlorhexidine gluconate, the improvement of the surgical technique, the protection of the cutaneous margins of incision, the use of new devices, the accurate hemostasis and the reduction of surgery time lead to a lack of SSIs and systemic infection complications in all patients undergoing thyroid surgery in NO-AP. In-vitro and in-vivo evaluation of modified sodium starch glycolate for exploring its haemostatic potential
Publication date: Available online 11 February 2020Source: Carbohydrate PolymersAuthor(s): Vineeta Panwar, Jijo Thomas, Anjana Sharma, Vianni Chopra, Swati Kaushik, Ashutosh Kumar, Deepa GhoshAbstractThe control of blood flow from breached blood vessels during surgery or trauma is challenging. With the existing treatment options being either expensive or ineffective, the development of a haemostat that overcome such drawbacks would be beneficial. With an aim to develop an ideal haemostat, the potential of sodium starch glycolate (SSG), a commonly used pharmaceutical disintegrant was modified to obtain porous microparticles...

Puff Pastry-Like Chitosan/Konjac Glucomannan Matrix with Thrombin-Occupied Microporous Starch Particles as a Composite for Hemostasis
In this study, we produced a puff pastry-like chitosan/konjac glucomannan matrix loaded with thrombin-occupied microporous starch particles to initiate hemostasis. The composite showed a hierarchical porous structure system consisting of porous and rough structures with evenly distributed microporous starch particles. Thrombin was evenly and independently distributed on the microporous starch particles within the hierarchical system and served to accelerate hemostasis. Meanwhile, the composite displayed excellent water absorption capacity, high zeta potential, roughness, and porosity. The composite was found to elicit desi...
