COVID-19 and SEPSIS
Turk J Med Sci. 2021 Sep 30. doi: 10.3906/sag-2108-239. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe COVID-19 pandemic has created a major alteration in the medical literature including the sepsis discussion. From the outset of the pandemic, various reports have indicated that although there are some unique features pertinent to COVID-19, many of its acute manifestations are similar to sepsis caused by other pathogens. As a consequence, the old definitions now require consideration of this new etiologic agent, namely SARS-CoV-2. Although the pathogenesis of COVID-19 has been not fully explained, the data obtained so far in hospitaliz...

Heart rate turbulence measurements in patients with dipper and nondipper hypertension: the effects of autonomic functions
CONCLUSIONS This study shows a statistically significant difference in HRT measurements between dipper and non-dipper hypertensive patients. Deteriorated autonomic circadian rhythm and autonomic functions may contribute to these results.PMID:34590797 | DOI:10.3906/sag-2105-177 (Source: Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences)

Circular RNA circPRMT5 is Upregulated in Breast Cancer and is Required for Cell Proliferation and Migration
CONCLUSION: CircPRMT5 seems to act as an oncogene in the progression of BC. Our data suggest that CircPRMT5 may be used as a biomarker for the diagnosis, prognosis evaluation and targeted therapy of breast cancer.PMID:34590798 | DOI:10.3906/sag-2102-90 (Source: Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences)

Evaluation of the contribution of fine-needle non-aspiration cytology to diagnosis in cases with pulmonary malignant lesions
CONCLUSION: In cases with pulmonary lesions, FNNAC performed from the peripheral lymph node is an easy-to-apply, cost effective, minimally invasive method with a high diagnostic success and low complication rate. It can be preferred for diagnosis, staging and recurrence in malignant cases not suitable for advanced invasive procedures.PMID:34590799 | DOI:10.3906/sag-2104-363 (Source: Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences)

Assessment of Takayasu arteritis in routine practice with PETVAS, an 18F-FDG PET quantitative scoring tool
CONCLUSION: We observed higher PETVAS in patients with active disease and elevated acute phase reactants. Although scores in our study (performed at one-hour) were lower compared to the original PETVAS study performed at two hours, PETVAS seems to be a reliable tool to quantify FDG PET scores in routine practice.PMID:34590801 | DOI:10.3906/sag-2106-129 (Source: Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences)

Non-pharmaceutical interventions in Turkey and worldwide during COVID-19 pandemic
Turk J Med Sci. 2021 Sep 30. doi: 10.3906/sag-2106-210. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNon-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) are actions apart from getting vaccinated and medications, in order to promote deceleration of the spread of illness among people and communities during pandemic. In this article, we aim to examine NPIs applied in Turkey and worldwide due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the NPIs such as isolation, quarantine, and contact tracing were maintained with updates of the Ministry of Health guidelines in Turkey. Some NPIs including travel and partial or full curfew mobilization restrictions were set in ac...

The objectives of this study were to assess pharyngeal airway volume (PAV) in patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) by cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) and to evaluate the impact of diaphragm thickness and pulmonary function tests on PAV.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty DM1 patients (10 female and 20 male; mean age 42.40 ± 12.07) were included in the study. Age and gender-matched thirty patients were participated as control group. In DM1 group pulmonary function tests (PFT) were performed.

Three-Dimensional Assessment of Pharyngeal Airway in Individuals with Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1
Independent t-test was used to compare PAV values of patients with DM1 and control group. The Mann-Whitney U test w...
