Cardiovascular Disease & amp; Cancer Risk Among South Asians: Impact of Sociocultural Influences on Lifestyle and Behavior
AbstractA comprehensive literature review revealed cultural beliefs, societal obligations, and gender roles within the South Asian community to be indirect contributors to the health of South Asian immigrants (SAIs). Health professionals need to increase their work with SAI communities to change less beneficial cultural elements such as misconceptions about health and exercise, and lack of communication when using alternative medicines. Community engaged efforts and continuing medical education are both needed to improve the health of the South Asian immigrant population in a culturally appropriate manner.

Coaching patients to be active, informed partners in their health.
In this issue, the article “A Physician Communication Coaching Program,” by McDaniel and colleagues (see record 2020-40858-007), addresses this untenable situation through the coaching of physicians as part of continuing medical education. The coaching program hopes to explode the traditional paradigm of physician–patient interaction. An alternative paradigm is the philosophy of health coaching. While McDaniel et al. (2020) describe coaching physicians, the new paradigm involves coaching patients. Health coaching can be summed up in the adage: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and...

Electronic consultations between primary providers and radiologists improve patient care
(American Roentgen Ray Society) According to ARRS' American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR), the eConsult electronic consultation system allowed primary care providers to easily consult with radiologists, was perceived as high value by primary care providers, resulted in altered patient management, and avoided unnecessary imaging tests. " We identified follow-up imaging of cystic lesions and imaging workup of pain in patients as opportunities for continuing medical education for primary care providers, " the AJR authors wrote.

Transgender health in medical education
We describe important aspects of transgender and gender-diverse health care, including the design and provision of health services, epidemiological considerations, transition-related care, changes in transition-related goals, cultural considerations, and political and legal issues. We then review the existing global literature on incorporating transgender health into medical curricula. We make a case for prioritizing improved education in medical schools on the specific health needs of transgender and gender-diverse people as part of addressing global health inequities in care. Our recommendations for comprehensive educati...

Augmenting Fellow Education Through Spaced Multiple-Choice Questions.
Conclusions: Introduction of a spaced education curriculum resulted in a sustained positive learner experience for >5 yr with demonstrated mastery of material. Spaced education learning is a viable addition to augment training experience, especially in areas of curricular gaps such as operational medicine. Correct answer data may also be useful to perform Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-required objective assessment of knowledge. PMID: 29401332 [PubMed - in process]

Training medical educators to teach: bridging the gap between perception and reality
AbstractTeaching is a core expectation of physicians in academic hospitals and academic medical centers, but best practices for training physicians to teach have not been established. There is significant variability in how physicians are trained to teach medical students and residents across the world, and between Israeli hospitals. In an article published earlier this year in the Israel Journal of Health Policy Research, Nothman and colleagues describe a survey of 245 Israeli physicians in departments of internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology, at four different faculties of medicine across Israel. T...

Pre-graduate and post-graduate education in personalized medicine in the Czech Republic: statistics, analysis and recommendations
Abstract The main goal of personalized medicine is the individualized approach to the patient’s treatment. It could be achieved only by the integration of the complexity of novel findings in diverse “omics” disciplines, new methods of medical imaging, as well as implementation of reliable biomarkers into the medical care. The implementation of personalized medicine into clinical practice is dependent on the adaptation of pre-graduate and post-graduate medical education to these principles. The situation in the education of personalized medicine in the Czech Republic is analyzed together with novel education...

Physical activity levels and motivational responses of boys and girls: A comparison of direct instruction and tactical games models of games teaching in physical education
The purpose of this study was to independently determine the levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and self-determined motivation of both boys and girls as they participated in prolonged units of invasion games (i.e. 6–12 lessons) through two pedagogical models: direct instruction and the tactical games model (TGM). It was hypothesized that given the differences in domain interaction and lesson structure, both boys and girls would gain higher levels of physical activity (PA) and possess higher quality motivation during TGM-based lessons when compared to direct instruction lessons. Seventy-two childr...
