A Longitudinal Study of Commonly Used Admissions Measures and Disenrollment from Medical School and Graduate Medical Education Probation or Termination from Training.
Conclusions: Academic difficulties, especially in the basic sciences, appear to be the most common factor for disenrollment from medical school. These students also had lower MCAT scores, particularly on the first attempt. The MCAT performance indicators and undergraduate GPA were consistently lower, but not statistically significant, for those who appeared before SPC or were put on probation or terminated from training during GME. Biting into integrated quality improvement: medical student and staff blinded taste test for sodium reduction improving medical education and care?
AbstractOver 90  % of Americans consume an excessive amount of sodium as a key salt ingredient, despite its contribution to morbidity and mortality. No known studies have analyzed the optimal salt reduction level for medical students and staff in characteristic restaurant recipes. Increased studies linking such qu ality improvement in medical education and care through lifestyle-based modifications with medical professionals in training may provide a promising model for competency-based medical education in the age of healthcare reform. A volunteer sample (n = 105) of medical students and staff was recruited over 3 wee...

Undergraduate Medical Education Leader Performance Predicts Postgraduate Military Leader Performance
CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study indicate that a positive relationship exists between leader performance at the end of medical school and leader performance in PGY1 and 3 years of residency. These correlations were stronger in PGY3 compared to PGY1. During PGY1, learners may be more focused on being a physician and an effective team member compared to PGY3 where they have a deeper understanding of their roles and responsibilities and can take on more leadership roles. Additionally, this study also found that MCAT and USMLE Step exams performance was not predictive of PGY1 or PGY3 leader performance. These findings p...

Post-graduate education for medical specialists focused on patients with medically unexplained physical symptoms; development of a communication skills training programme
Conclusion: By applying the ‘intervention mapping approach’ we were able to create a feasible and promising intervention to improve specialist interaction with MUPS patients. Intervention effects are currently being assessed in a randomized controlled trial.Practice implications: If the RCT demonstrates sufficient effectiveness and efficiency of the MUPS focused communication skills training programme for medical specialists the intervention could be embedded in post-graduate education of medical specialists and residents.

Significance of the doctorate in scientific medical education.
Abstract According to European and German law, the medical education of physicians must take place in a scientific degree program at a university or under the supervision of a university. To keep up the ideal of a scientific degree program, various organizations and associations, such as the German Research Foundation, the German Council of Science and Humanities and the German Medical Faculty Association, see the need for an even stronger anchoring of academic learning content in the course of study. Traditionally, a scientific project, which is carried out during the studies, provides the basis for the Doct...

Beyond 'born not made: challenging character, emotions and professionalism in undergraduate medical education
In this article we explore the historical antecedents and ongoing perpetuation of the idea that medical professionals must adhere to a specific ‘character’. In the late nineteenth century, an ideal of the medical student as ‘born not made’ was substantiated through medical school opening addresses and other medical literature. An understanding prevailed that students would have a natural inclination that would suit them to medical work, which was predicated on class structures. As we move into the twentieth-century context, we see that such underpinnings remained, even if the idea of ‘characte...
