“ Bulking Up ” For Sports?
Discussion Athletes, whether recreational or competitive, who participate in weight sensitive sports commonly gain or lose weight to achieve a particular body type or to improve performance. Athletes in duration or aesthetic sports (such as distance running, diving, dance, etc.) attempting to lose weight to be able to move the body against gravity better. Sports that emphasize strength and power including combat sports (such as football, wrestling, mixed martial arts, body building, etc.) often have athletes attempting to gain weight and lean muscle mass to improve performance. This is felt to increase the strength-to-weig...

Are Taste Preferences Genetic?
Discussion Taste or gustation is the sensation of taste and is a primary human sense. There are 5 basic tastes currently accepted including sweet, sour, bitter, salty and umami or savory. There is also some data for distinct tastes of fats (called oleogustus) or complex carbohydrates. Taste buds in the oral cavity are the primary chemoreceptors of whether or not to allow a substance into our bodies. Taste receptors are also found in the gastrointestinal tract and are involved in gut sensing. Flavor and taste are not the same although in general everyday language people use them interchangeably. Flavor is “… th...

Dietary Assessment of Korean Non-dialysis Chronic Kidney Disease Patients with or without Diabetes.
CONCLUSION: DM and kidney function affected energy and nutrient intakes. Subjects in the Late-CKD group consumed less energy than those in the Early-CKD group. Non-DM subjects seemed to restrict protein intake starting from the Early-CKD stage than subjects with DM. Subjects in this study had low energy and high sodium intakes compared with recommended levels. Protein intake was lower in advanced CKD patients, but their intake level was still higher than the recommendation. Dietary intervention strategies for non-dialysis CKD patients need to be customized depending on the presence of DM and kidney function. PMID: 3253...

The changing face of hunger: from fasting to the concept of atherogenesis.
Abstract The history of hunger is a story about natural disasters and wars, but, on the other hand, also about the investigation of evolutionary defense mechanisms concerning quantitative food shortages. The article presents how fasting and the experimental starving oriented the development of physiology, and it is based on a comparative analysis of monographs and articles on starvation in the medical context from library collections and the PubMed database. Over the centuries, doctors have believed that fasting has a beneficial effect on health, and they recommended a restrictive diet during an illness. In the 19...

The 6th International Lafora Epilepsy Workshop: Advances in the search for a cure
Epilepsy Behav. 2021 May 1;119:107975. doi: 10.1016/j.yebeh.2021.107975. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLafora disease (LD) is a fatal childhood dementia with severe epilepsy and also a glycogen storage disease that is caused by recessive mutations in either the EPM2A or EPM2B genes. Aberrant, cytoplasmic carbohydrate aggregates called Lafora bodies (LBs) are both a hallmark and driver of the disease. The 6th International Lafora Epilepsy Workshop was held online due to the pandemic. Nearly 300 clinicians, academic and industry scientists, trainees, NIH representatives, and LD friends and family members participated in the ...

A comprehensive search of the primary and secondary metabolites and radical scavenging potential of Trillium govanianum Wall. ex D. Don
Chem Biodivers. 2021 Aug 10. doi: 10.1002/cbdv.202100300. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTrillium govanianum rhizomes are traditionally consumed as a raw powder and decoction for the treatment of health complications. Hence, the present study aimed to investigate whether aqueous and alcoholic extracts of T. govanianum rhizomes under hot and cold extraction conditions have similar or dissimilar chemical, nutrient, and antioxidant profiles. The total phenolics, flavonoids, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and energy values were estimated in all the conditionally prepared samples. The total phenolics (21.23 ± 1.4 mg GAE/g extra...

Plant lectins as prospective antiviral biomolecules in the search for COVID-19 eradication strategies
Biomed Pharmacother. 2021 Dec 6;146:112507. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2021.112507. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLectins or clusters of carbohydrate-binding proteins of non-immune origin are distributed chiefly in the Plantae. Lectins have potent anti-infectivity properties for several RNA viruses including SARS-CoV-2. The primary purpose of this review is to review the ability of lectins mediated potential biotherapeutic and bioprophylactic strategy against coronavirus causing COVID-19. Lectins have binding affinity to the glycans of SARS-COV-2 Spike glycoprotein that has N-glycosylation sites. Apart from this, the complement...

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 11686: Impact of One-Year Dietary Education on Change in Selected Anthropometric and Biochemical Parameters in Children with Excess Body Weight
w Walczak Obesity is regarded as a civilization disease that increases mortality and the risk of cardiovascular complications. In Poland, the prevalence of excess body weight in the paediatric population has been steadily increasing. The consequences of excess body weight in the developmental age population affect children’s health and destabilize their development. Appropriate dietary interventions are the main non-invasive methods of preventing and treating obesity. They should be aimed at the whole family, optimally with the use of simple tools such as the Healthy Eating Pyramid. Due to the increasing ...

Archana Shrestha Diabetes can be prevented through lifestyle modification in the prediabetic phase. A group-based lifestyle intervention called ‘Diabetes Prevention Education Program’ (DiPEP) was tested recently in Nepal. The present study aimed to explore experiences of making lifestyle changes among people with prediabetes participating in the DiPEP. This qualitative study, with semi-structured interviews of 20 participants, was conducted 4–7 months following DiPEP intervention. Data analysis was performed by thematic analysis. The results included four themes, understanding ...
