Nutrition education on obesity and diabetes to medical students
Adv Physiol Educ. 2021 Jun 1;45(2):217-223. doi: 10.1152/advan.00193.2020.ABSTRACTIt is important for medical students to understand the relationship between nutrition, obesity, and diabetes to educate their patients in the future. However, medical training does not always include nutritional education. An experiential learning project was incorporated into the medical school curriculum as an effort to implement nutrition in the physiology course. First-year medical students (n = 140) received lectures on the regulation of blood glucose levels and their relationship to carbohydrates with different glycemic indexes (GI), ob...

Unarousable child with a short bowel
Unarousable child with short bowel A 4-year-old boy was admitted with progressive lethargy of a few hours’ duration and no other symptoms. His medical history was relevant for short bowel syndrome (SBS), following neonatal volvulus, with residual bowel length of 23 cm and intact ileocecal valve. He had similar self-limiting episodes in the past, after weaning parenteral nutrition, especially after eating large meals. The day before, he had consumed a large amount of apples. Arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis showed metabolic acidosis with normal lactacidaemia (pH 7.09, pCO2 19 mm Hg, pO2 101 mm Hg, HCO3 5.8 mmol/L, BE...

Cardiac rehabilitation in patients with diabetes
CONCLUSIONS: Therapeutic management of heart disease in diabetic patients is aimed at reducing cardiovascular risk, through pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. However, the weakest point of the treatment is the lack of adherence to the treatments. Physical Exercise is an essential element, together with hypoglycemic and nutritional treatment in Diabetes Mellitus (DM), due to its usefulness in the control of diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular complications.PMID:33687182 | DOI:10.23736/S0031-0808.21.04308-1

Searching for Utopia, the Challenge of Standardized Medical Nutrition Therapy Prescription in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Management: A Critical Review
Semin Reprod Med DOI: 10.1055/s-0040-1722316Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common pregnancy disorder and the incidence is increasing worldwide. GDM is associated with adverse maternal outcomes which may be reduced with proper management. Lifestyle modification in the form of medical nutrition therapy and physical activity, as well as self-monitoring of blood glucose levels, is the cornerstone of GDM management. Inevitably, the search for the “ultimate” diet prescription has been ongoing. Identifying the amount and type of carbohydrate to maintain blood glucose levels below targets while balancing the nutritio...
