Pediatric tertiary emergency care departments in Zagreb, Rijeka, and Split before and during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic: a Croatian national multicenter study
CONCLUSION: A significant reduction in the number of pediatric emergency department visits and hospital admissions is indirectly related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the reduction was due to a decreased number of infectious disease cases. However, the number of visits requiring urgent medical intervention did not change.PMID:34981690 | PMC:PMC8771230 | DOI:10.3325/cmj.2021.62.580

Concurrent and transferable resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins, monobactam and fluoroquinolone in a Salmonella enterica serovar Worthington blood isolate from a neonate in Kolkata, India
Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) infection, characterised by gastroenteritis with or without focal extraintestinal invasion, represents a major public health problem in developing countries. Emergence of NTS isolates resistant both to extended-spectrum cephalosporins (ESCs) and fluoroquinolones (FQs), the current drugs of choice for invasive NTS infections, is a challenge to the treatment of these infections . In NTS, FQ resistance is mainly mediated by mutations in the quinolone resistance-determining regions of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase; in addition, the role of plasmids and efflux pumps has been investigated . Resistan...

Detection and molecular characterisation of adenovirus in children under 5 years old with diarrhoea
Conclusion: AdV31 and AdV7 were associated with gastroenteritis. Adenovirus serotypes showed a similarity of 80% (20/25) and 20% (5/25) with Asian and American serotypes, respectively. PMID: 29151318 [PubMed]

Carbapenem and colistin resistance in Enterobacteriaceae: worldwide spread and future perspectives
Carbapenems and colistin antibiotics are the major weapons against multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter cloacea, Klebsiella oxytoca, Proteus mirabilis, Citrobacter freundii, Citrobacter koseri, Serratia spp., Morganella morganii and Salmonella spp. have been reported as carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae members. Carbapenem resistance mostly occurs by means of some enzymes such as classes A, B and D carbapenemases. New Delhi metallo-β-lactamases, K. pneumoniae carbapenemase, imipenemase metallo-β-lactamase, Verona in...

Antibiotic-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in healthy gut flora: A report from north Indian semiurban community.
This study was conducted to find the faecal presence of antibiotic-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in faecal samples in the community in north India. Methods: In this prospective study, 207 stool samples were collected from apparently healthy individuals residing in a semiurban community in Chandigarh, India, from August to October, 2015. Isolates belonging to family Enterobacteriaceae were identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), and antibiotic susceptibility was determined using Clinical Laboratory Standard Institute disc diffusion method. Detection o...

What Causes Neutropenia?
Discussion Neuropenia is defined as a neutrophil count < 1500/µL. It is classified as mild from 1000-1500/µL, moderate from 500-1000/µL, and severe if < 500/µL. It is not uncommonly seen in the setting of acute self-limited infections, and with re-testing returns to normal. It is also not uncommon at certain ages, such as perinatally, especially in premature infants (up to 6%) . It is also common in certain ethnic groups particularly African American or Arabic populations where up to 10% of the children may have mild neutropenia which does not cause clinical disease. The overall prevalence a...

What Are Potential Complications of Tattooing?
Discussion “Tattooing of skin via deposition of pigment particles and ink ingredients in the dermis changes normal skin into abnormal skin. Fortunately, this often causes no harm and no disease, although with important exceptions.” Tattoos can be inadvertent from road dirt, gunpowder, pencil graphite etc., but most are desired. Tattoos are common in many cultures and over time..They have been increasing in popularity in the United States over the past few years particularly with a younger, wider and more diverse population.
