An updated review of pandas/pans disease also known as idiopathic autoimmune encephalitis: what the allergist should know
CONCLUSION: Due to the complexity and variability in how patients with IAE may present to the Allergist/Immunologist office, an interdisciplinary approach is imperative to provide patients with the best medical care. Still, additional research is needed to further elucidate the mechanism(s) and optimal treatment algorithm for IAE in order to facilitate broader recognition and acceptance of this condition by the medical community.PMID:37634580 | DOI:10.1016/j.anai.2023.08.022

Perception of burden of oral and inhaled corticosteroid adverse effects on asthma-specific quality of life
: A multistakeholder core outcome set created for asthma trials showed that asthma specific quality of life (QoL) was a critically meaningful outcome. However, the definition and how to measure it was undetermined. The adverse effects (AEs) of corticosteroids may be a vital clinical trial outcome. Yet, the AE burden from the patient perspective has not yet been elucidated in an asthma population.

Thymic Stromal Lymphopoietin (TSLP), Its Isoforms and the Interplay with the Epithelium in Allergy and Asthma
Int J Mol Sci. 2023 Aug 12;24(16):12725. doi: 10.3390/ijms241612725.ABSTRACTThymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) is a pleiotropic cytokine that has emerged as a critical player in the development and progression of allergy and asthma. It is primarily produced by epithelial cells and functions as a potent immune system activator. TSLP acts through interaction with its receptor complex, composed of the TSLP receptor (TSLPR) and interleukin-7 receptor alpha chain (IL-7Rα), activating downstream complex signalling pathways. The TSLP major isoform, known as long-form TSLP (lfTSLP), is upregulated in the airway epithelium of pat...

Canadian Wildfire Smoke Increased Asthma-Related ED Visits in the U.S.
(MedPage Today) -- Exposure to smoke originating from the Canadian wildfires led to a rise in asthma-associated emergency department (ED) visits in the U.S., with a large spike seen in New York during days with the highest recorded pollution, CDC...

Prevalence and Burden of Coconut Allergy in the United States
CONCLUSION: Roughly 1 in 260 Americans report symptoms consistent with an IgE-mediated allergy to coconut, although fewer than half of these individuals report receiving a physician diagnosis. Our data indicate that most individuals with reported coconut allergy meeting symptom-based criteria for convincingly IgE-mediated disease have comorbid food allergies, and for many patients, clinical management appears to be suboptimal.PMID:37625503 | DOI:10.1016/j.anai.2023.08.017

Adding oscillometry to spirometry in guidelines better identifies uncontrolled asthma, future exacerbations, potential targeted therapy
In conclusion, these data support the benefit of adding IOS to spirometry in future asthma guidelines, and suggest the potential benefit from targeted therapy.PMID:37625502 | DOI:10.1016/j.anai.2023.08.011

Neuroimmune interplay during type 2 inflammation: symptoms, mechanisms and therapeutic targets in atopic diseases
Type 2 inflammation is characterized by overexpression and heightened activity of type 2 cytokines, mediators and cells that drive neuroimmune activation and sensitization to previously sub-threshold stimuli. The consequences of altered neuroimmune activity differ with tissue type and disease and include: skin inflammation, sensitization to pruritogens, and itch amplification in atopic dermatitis and prurigo nodularis; airway inflammation/hyperresponsiveness, loss of expiratory volume, airflow obstruction and increased mucus production in asthma; loss of sense of smell in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps; and dysph...

An updated review of pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with Streptococcus/pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome, also known as idiopathic autoimmune encephalitis: What the allergist should know
Pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome, further subcategorized as pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcus, is a form of idiopathic autoimmune encephalitis (IAE). Poststreptococcal autoimmunity seen in Idiopathic autoimmune encephalitis manifests as various neuropsychiatric symptoms such as obsessive rituals, tics, anxiety, depression, and many others. Idiopathic autoimmune encephalitis has clinically heterogeneous phenotypes that make accurate diagnosing difficult, although diagnostic testing such as the Cunningham Panel increases the likelihood of finding effective treatments.

Analysis of comorbidities and multimorbidity in adult patients in the International Severe Asthma Registry
Investigation for the presence of asthma comorbidities is recommended by GINA as their presence can complicate asthma management.
