Drought in the Semiarid Region of Brazil: Exposure, Vulnerabilities and Health Impacts from the Perspectives of Local Actors
Conclusion The results obtained from this research shows, in general, the fragility in the social and political infrastructure necessary to improve the living conditions of populations, particularly those that depend on family agriculture in drought prone areas. The conditions of social, economic and environmental vulnerabilities presented in the region can be amplified by the drought process, and can aggravate the impacts resulting drought events, thus disadvantaging the population of this region, as shown in the Fig. 1. The general perception of the interviewees of the health sector shows an agreement with what is found...

Association of Ugrp2 gene polymorphisms with adenoid hypertrophy in the pediatric population
ConclusionSome single nucleotide polymorphisms and their combinations in the Ugrp2 gene are associated with an increased risk of developing adenoid hypertrophy. Therefore, we tried to underline the importance of genetic factors associated with adenoid hypertrophy and its related clinical phenotypes.

What Are Common Cross-reactivities with Other Allergens?
Discussion The most common allergic foods are cow’s milk (most common), egg, peanut, tree nut, soy, wheat, fish and shellfish. Egg, milk, soy and wheat tend to occur in young children and these are more likely to be outgrown over time. Peanut, tree nut, shellfish, and fish occur at all ages and are less likely to be outgrown. Peanut and tree nut allergies also tend to be more severe than other foods. Ninety percent of food fatalities were attributed to tree nuts and peanuts. In a study of anaphylaxis in schools, food was the most likely trigger (54%) with nuts and fruits being the most commonly identified foods. Co-f...

Polymorphisms in the DAD1 and OXA1L genes are associated with asthma and atopy in a South American population
This study aimed to evaluate how polymorphisms in DAD1 and OXA1L are associated with asthma and markers of atopy in individuals from the Salvador cohort of the SCAALA (Social Change Asthma and Allergy in Latin America) program. The DNA of 1220 individuals was genotyped using the Illumina 2.5 Human Omni Bead chip. Logistic regression analyses were performed with PLINK 1.9 software to verify the association between DAD1 and OXA1L polymorphisms and asthma and atopic markers, adjusted for sex, age, helminth infections and ancestry markers, using an additive model. The DAD1 and OXA1L genes were associated with some of the evalu...

IJERPH, Vol. 15, Pages 1203: Respiratory Condition of Family Farmers Exposed to Pesticides in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
This study aimed to evaluate whether pesticide exposure is associated with respiratory outcomes among rural workers and relatives in Brazil during the crop and off-seasons. Family farmers (82) were interviewed about occupational history and respiratory symptoms, and cholinesterase tests were conducted in the crop-season. Spirometry was performed during the crop and off-season. Respiratory outcomes were compared between seasons and multiple regressions analysis were conducted to search for associations with exposure indicators. Participants were occupationally and environmentally exposed to multiple pesticides from an early...

Factors associated with asthma expression in adolescents
Conclusions: Exposure to animals in and outside the home is associated with asthma symptoms, as is environmental tobacco smoke exposure. Families, health professionals, and administrators of health care facilities should take that into account in order to prevent asthma and reduce asthma morbidity.RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar os fatores de risco associados aos sintomas relacionados à asma em adolescentes de 13 e 14 anos. Clinical and Laboratory Profile of Zika and Dengue Infected Patients: Lessons Learned From the Co-circulation of Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya in Brazil
In conclusion, our data characterized the occurrence of an ongoing triple epidemic caused by DENV, ZIKV and CHIKV in Campo Grande, MS, Brazil. Importantly, the knowledge about dengue or zika severity in co-infected individuals is still unknown, however we provided here, new contributions related to the clinical presentations and laboratorial parameters during DENV and ZIKV infections, in an endemic scenario. Immunomodulation of allergic response in children and adolescents: What we can learn from lymphatic filarial infection.
CONCLUSIONS: The allergic response pattern in group with filarial infection was similar to that of the groups with and without allergic diseases, but the response to IL-5 in the culture stimulated by D. pteronyssinus was an exclusive characteristic of the allergic group.
