Utility of FRET in studies of membrane protein oligomerization: the concept of the effective dissociation constant
Biophys J. 2023 Sep 21:S0006-3495(23)00588-X. doi: 10.1016/j.bpj.2023.09.011. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe activity of many membrane receptors is controlled through their lateral association into dimers or higher order oligomers. While Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) measurements have been used extensively to characterize the stability of receptor dimers, the utility of FRET in studies of larger oligomers has been limited. Here we introduce an effective equilibrium dissociation constant that can be extracted from FRET measurements for EphA2, a receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) known to form active oligomers of ...

Attention-gated U-Net networks for simultaneous axial/sagittal planes segmentation of injured spinal cords
This study proposes a new CNN-based segmentation method in which information is exchanged between two networks analyzing the scans from different planes. Our aim was to develop a robust method for automatic segmentation of the spinal cord in patients having suffered traumatic injuries. The database consisted of 106 sagittal MRI scans from 94 patients with traumatic spinal cord injuries. Our method used an innovative approach where the scans were analyzed in series under the axial and sagittal plane by two different convolutional networks. The results were compared with those of Deepseg 2D from the Spinal Cord Toolbox (SCT)...

Telephonic intervention to combat non-adherence to oral iron-folic acid supplementation in pregnancy: A randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSION: In addition to improving adherence to oral IFAS, telephonic intervention mitigates side effects and enhances hemoglobin in anemic pregnant women. The increase in adherence was threefold in the experimental group compared to a marginal rise in the control group. This study recommends the implementation of a telephonic intervention to promote adherence to oral IFAS among anemic pregnant women.PMID:37736306 | PMC:PMC10509657 | DOI:10.1016/j.eurox.2023.100235

Electrochemical biostimulation of aerobic metabolic TCE degradation in a bioaugmentation approach
In this study, a combined bio-/electro-approach to stimulate the TCE degradation by the SF culture was investigated in laboratory experiments. Column experiments were set up to compare a bioaugmentation approach with an electrochemical biostimulated bioaugmentation approach. Low strength direct current increased the amount of degraded TCE to about 150 % of the control. Through lowering the inflow concentration of oxygen, the effect of the electro-biostimulation in a low oxygen setting confirmed the potential of the bio-electro process for treatment of oxygen-deprived, TCE-contaminated sites.PMID:37735338 | DOI:10.1007/s11356-023-29839-1

Quantifying the impact of green growth and digital transformation on health: new insights from Asian economies
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 22. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29595-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn today's global landscape, a paradigm shift from closed systems to open and digital networks is underway, with digital transformation and green growth permeating every facet of society, including healthcare. Therefore, our study attempts to explore the impact of digital transformation and green growth on the health outcomes of Asian economies. Employing the ARDL-PMG methodology, we delve into the long-run and short-run correlations between digital transformation, green growth, and health. Digital transformation is capt...

Study on the formation process and mechanism of aerobic granular sludge in the sequencing batch biofilter granular reactor
This study systematically investigated the formation process and mechanism of aerobic granular sludge in an SBBGR to provide a theoretical basis for optimizing the culture of aerobic granular sludge. Aerobic granular sludge with good performance was successfully cultivated after 40 days of incubation using synthetic wastewater as feed: the mixed liquid suspended solids and mixed liquor volatile suspended solids increased from 3.85 and 1.85 g/L to 31.38 and 24.74 g/L respectively, and the COD, TN, and TP removal efficiencies were 91.21%, 84.99%, and 58.14%, respectively. The experimental results showed that Amoebacteria and...

Association of urinary bisphenols with thyroid function in the general population: a cross-sectional study of an industrial park in China
The objectives of this study are to describe demographic characteristics, BP exposure levels, and thyroid function measurements in potentially exposed and control districts and to investigate the association of urinary BPs with thyroid function. Data were collected from a general population aged 3-79 years (N = 281) recruited by the Zhejiang Human Biomonitoring Program (ZJHBP). The concentrations of 10 kinds of BPs in urine and serum free triiodothyronine (FT3), total triiodothyronine (TT3), free thyroxine (FT4), total thyroxine (TT4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroglobulin (Tg), thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb), ...

Adsorptive exclusion of crystal violet dye using barium encapsulated alginate/carbon composites: characterization and adsorption modeling studies
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Sep 22. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29894-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe present study is devoted to the removal of crystal violet dye using the synthesized barium alginate/carbon composites abbreviated as BA (barium alginate), BAAC (barium alginate/activated carbon), BASC (barium alginate/starch carbon), and BASSC (barium alginate/starch carbon modified with CTAB). The adsorptive removal of crystal violet as a function of contact time, pH of solution, composite dose, initial dye concentration, and temperature was studied. The uptake of crystal violet (CV) dye for the composites was recor...

Impact of green digital finance on green economic recovery and green agricultural development: implications for green environment
This study explores the potential of green digital finance and green agricultural growth to contribute to the green economic recovery of the BRICS economies. We examine the relationship between these variables using empirical data and various statistical techniques, including vector error correction, co-integration, unit root tests and long-run analysis. Our results suggest that well-functioning financial institutions play a crucial role in facilitating the structural transformation of green digital finance and promoting green agricultural growth to achieve green economic recovery in the BRICS region. Our findings undersco...

Phytotoxicity of coal waste elutriates (Douro Coalfield, North Portugal) in Lactuca sativa
This study aims to assess the ecotoxicological effects of 25 soil elutriates from these different soil types in seed germination and individual (emergence, growth, and morphologic alterations) and subindividual parameters in Lactuca sativa. The different evaluated endpoints were differently affected regarding the soil elutriate revealing the high heterogeneity of soil characteristics. The presence of different potentially toxic elements (e.g., Cd, Cr, Pb, Zn) in soil elutriates, even in low concentrations, caused effects on L. sativa development. Unburned coal wastes and downhill soil elutriates were able to inhibit the ge...

Large-view x-ray imaging for medical applications using the world's only vertically polarized synchrotron radiation beam and a single asymmetric Si crystal
Phys Med Biol. 2023 Sep 22;68(19). doi: 10.1088/1361-6560/acf640.ABSTRACTObjective.X-ray microangiography provides detailed information on the internal structure and function of a biological subject. Its ability to evaluate the microvasculature of small animals is useful for acquiring basic and clinical medical knowledge. The following three conditions are necessary to attain detailed knowledge of biological functions: (1) high temporal resolution with sufficient x-ray intensity, (2) high spatial resolution, and (3) a wide field of view. Because synchrotron radiation microangiography systems provide high sapatial resolutio...

Pulse parameter optimizer: an efficient tool for achieving prescribed dose and dose rate with electron FLASH platforms
Conclusion. A pulse parameter optimization application was built for a commercial electron FLASH platform to increase efficiency in dose, dose rate, and pulse parameter prescription process. Automating this process reduces safety concerns associated with manual look up and calculation of these parameters, especially when many subjects at different doses and dose rates are to be safely managed.PMID:37735967 | DOI:10.1088/1361-6560/acf63e
