The prevalence and prognosis of asymptomatic intracranial atherosclerosis in a community-based population: Results based on high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging
CONCLUSIONS: We found that ICAD detected using HR-MRI increases the long-term risk of a first-ever ischemic stroke in a stroke-free population, suggesting that the current primary prevention protocol of stroke awaits further optimization.PMID:37738517 | DOI:10.1111/ene.16057

Low-density lipoprotein subclasses over the menopausal transition and risk of coronary calcification and carotid atherosclerosis: the SWAN Heart and HDL ancillary studies
CONCLUSIONS: During the MT, women experience significant increases in LDL subclasses found to be related to greater cIMT levels and CAC prevalence. Whether these changes could better predict future risk of hard cardiovascular disease events beyond LDL-C remains a research question to address.PMID:37738035 | DOI:10.1097/GME.0000000000002245

Assembling the anaerobic gamma-butyrobetaine to TMA metabolic pathway in < em > Escherichia fergusonii < /em > and confirming its role in TMA production from dietary < em > L- < /em > carnitine in murine models
mBio. 2023 Sep 22:e0093723. doi: 10.1128/mbio.00937-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTrimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) is a major pro-atherogenic and pro-thrombotic metaorganismal molecule produced through the initial conversion of the dietary L-carnitine and other precursors into trimethylamine (TMA). We recently identified a dual-microbe anaerobic pathway for the metabolism of L-carnitine into TMA, in which the widely distributed cai operon in Enterobacteriaceae converts L-carnitine into gamma-butyrobetaine (γBB), followed by the degradation of γBB into TMA by the relatively rare gamma-butyrobetaine utilization (gbu) gene...

Non-Calcified Coronary Artery Plaque on Coronary Computed Tomography Angiogram: Prevalence and Significance
CONCLUSIONS: NCP is the initial precursor of calcified plaque and serves as a prominent marker of early coronary atherosclerosis. By detecting NCP during early stages, several measures can be implemented which can alter the evolutionary course of the underlying disease. This can potentially lead to a lower incidence of cardiovascular events.PMID:37736993 | DOI:10.3390/tomography9050140

Sirt6 enhances macrophage lipophagy and improves lipid metabolism disorder by regulating the Wnt1/ β-catenin pathway in atherosclerosis
In this study, ApoE-/-: Sirt6-/- and ApoE-/-: Sirt6Tg mice were used and lipid droplets were analysed via transmission electron microscopy and Bodipy 493/503 staining in vitro. Atherosclerotic plaques in ApoE-/-: Sirt6-/- mice showed greater necrotic cores and lower stability score. Reconstitution of Sirt6 in atherosclerotic mice improved lipid metabolism disorder and prevented the progression of atherosclerosis. Furthermore, macrophages with Ac-LDL intervention showed more lipid droplets and increased expression of adipophilin and PLIN2. Reconstitution of Sirt6 recruited using SNF2H suppressed Wnt1 expression and improved...

Female-specific risk factors of parity and menopause age and risk of carotid plaque: the multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis
CONCLUSION: In a multiethnic cohort, grand multiparity was independently associated with carotid plaque presence and progression. Early menopause, a known risk factor for CVD, was not captured by carotid plaque in this study. These findings may have implications for refining CVD risk assessment in women.PMID:37736349 | PMC:PMC10509453

High-Throughput Screening of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae Genome for 2-Amino-3-Methylimidazo 4,5-f Quinoline Resistance Identifies Colon Cancer-Associated Genes
G3 (Bethesda). 2023 Sep 22:jkad219. doi: 10.1093/g3journal/jkad219. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHeterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) are potent carcinogenic agents found in charred meats and cigarette smoke. However, few eukaryotic resistance genes have been identified. We used Saccharomyces cerevisiae (budding yeast) to identify genes that confer resistance to 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f] quinoline (IQ). CYP1A2 and NAT2 activate IQ to become a mutagenic nitrenium compound. Deletion libraries expressing human CYP1A2 and NAT2 or no human genes were exposed to either 400 or 800 µM IQ for five or ten generations. DNA barc...

Oncologic outcomes of segmentectomy versus lobectomy for clinical T1c radiological pure-solid non-small cell lung cancer
CONCLUSIONS: In T1c radiological pure-solid non-small cell lung cancer, segmentectomy was significantly associated with worse survival and insufficient loco-regional cancer control. Lobectomy remains the standard surgical treatment; meanwhile, segmentectomy should be applied with great caution.PMID:37738593 | DOI:10.1093/icvts/ivad152

Paraneoplastic arthritis: a series of 92 cases
CONCLUSION: As a result, although PA is a rare condition, it can be confused with many rheumatological diseases. The most commonly involved joint is the knee joint, followed by the ankle and hand-wrist. Autoantibody negativity, high LDH level, and arthritis unresponsive to treatment constitute important clues for diagnosis.PMID:37738571 | DOI:10.1093/rheumatology/kead500

Characterization of the Tumor Microenvironment of De Novo Oligometastatic Breast Cancer in a Nationwide Cohort
CONCLUSION: We identified tumor and ECM features in the primary tumor of patients with de novo OMBC that were associated with long-term survival. Our data should be validated in other patients with OMBC before they can be used in clinical practice.PMID:37738542 | DOI:10.1200/PO.22.00670

A new method of estimating prevalence of childhood cancer survivors (POCCS): example of the 20-year prevalence in The Netherlands
CONCLUSIONS: Using the POCCS model and aggregated cancer data, our estimates of childhood cancer survivors limited-duration prevalence were consistent with those computed by a standard method requiring individual cancer records. The POCCS method provides relevant information for planning follow-up and care for childhood cancer survivors.PMID:37738448 | DOI:10.1093/ije/dyad124
