Feasibility and acceptability of miracle fruit application prior to the consumption of sour-tasting foods as a weight-loss strategy in adults with diabetes or prediabetes: A randomized crossover trial
Appetite. 2023 Sep 17:107046. doi: 10.1016/j.appet.2023.107046. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMiracle fruit (MF) has emerged as a promising option for healthy noncaloric sweeteners due to its sour-to-sweet taste-modifying effects and high antioxidant activity. We aimed to examine the feasibility and acceptability of using MF as a weight-loss strategy for individuals with diabetes or prediabetes. Fifty Korean-American men and women (25 participants each) aged 45-75 years with diabetes or prediabetes were recruited in this study. They participated in a randomized placebo-controlled crossover trial where they took the assigne...

Byrsonima sericea Ethanol Extract Protected PC12 Cells from the Oxidative Stress and Apoptosis Induced by 6-Hydroxydopamine
This study aimed to evaluate the cytoprotective activity of the B. sericea ethanolic extract (BSEE) against the cytotoxicity induced by 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) in PC12 cells, an in vitro model of parkinsonism. The identification of phenolic compounds in the extract by HPLC-DAD revealed the presence of geraniin, rutin, isoquercetin, kaempferol 3-O-β-rutinoside, and quercetin. The BSEE (75-300 µg/mL) protected PC12 cells from toxicity induced by 6-OHDA (25 µg/mL), protected cell membrane integrity and showed antioxidant activity. BSEE was able to decrease nitrite levels, glutathione depletion, and protect cells from 6-...

Chem Biodivers. 2023 Sep 17:e202301159. doi: 10.1002/cbdv.202301159. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAn [Et3NH][HSO4] ionic-liquid catalyzed, intermolecular C-N bond formation for 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazole synthesis was achieved by the reaction of OPD and substituted aldehydes at ambient reaction conditions. Operational simplicity, use of easily available substrate and reagents, good yield in short reaction time, simple work-up, and column chromatographic free synthesis are remarkable features of this new protocol. The applicability of [Et3NH][HSO4] ionic-liquid as a green and inexpensive catalyst with good recyclabili...

β-Glucan Regulates Lipopolysaccharide Induced Genotoxic Damage to The Liver through The Induction of BRCA1 Protein Expression
CONCLUSION: The results manifested that the βG is a strong inducer of the BRCA1 protein expression in the LPSinduced hepatic stress and the protein constitutes the key component of a βG mediated liver protection against an LPS-induced genotoxic and pathological damage.PMID:37718767 | DOI:10.22074/cellj.2023.1989382.1226

Fe-NPs and Zn-NPs: Advancing Aquaculture Performance Through Nanotechnology
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.1007/s12011-023-03850-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAquaculture is a growing industry facing several challenges, including disease control, water quality management, and sustainable feed production. One potential solution to these challenges is the use of trace elements such as iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn), either in their conventional form or as nanoparticles (NPs). Aquatic animals need these micronutrients for normal growth, physiological processes, and overall health. In marine species, iron boosts development, immunity, and disease resistance. At the same time, zinc enhances meta...

Biochar supported nano core-shell (TiO < sub > 2 < /sub > /CoFe < sub > 2 < /sub > O < sub > 4 < /sub > ) for wastewater treatment
Environ Res. 2023 Sep 16:117169. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2023.117169. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe porous structure of biochar, its large surface area, and its anti-oxidant properties are extensively used for pollutant removal strategies. The literature to date has reported that the biochar assisted metal-oxide core-shells have a dominating degradation ability under solar irradiation. Therefore, this study is significantly focused on cinnamon biochar as an active anti-oxidant agent incorporated in titania-cobalt ferrite nanocore-shell (Biochar/TiO2/CoFe2O4) structures for the first time in wastewater treatment against c...

Climbazole causes cell apoptosis and lipidosis in the liver of grass carp
In this study, grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) and liver cell lines (L8824 cells) were treated with climbazole at concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 20 μg/L for 42 days in vivo and 24 h in vitro to evaluate the effects on the liver, respectively. Pathological, biochemical, and gene transcription and expression analyses were conducted to examine the hepatotoxicity. Our results showed that climbazole significantly decreased the hepatosomatic index, caused cell apoptosis in vivo and in vitro, and finally accumulated lipids in the liver. Beside, climbazole increased ROS levels, reduced Nrf2 and Keap1 mRNA and protein lev...

Air nanobubble water improves plant uptake and tolerance toward cadmium in phytoremediation
This study found that diluted air NBs (25% concentration) boosted cadmium uptake of A. philoxeroides by 17.39%. They also enhanced growth (25-50%) and photosynthetic pigments (10-20%) even at low cadmium levels (0.1 mM). Furthermore, the incorporation of 25% air NBs has been demonstrated to significantly amplify the performance of key antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase and catalase, alongside heightened levels of crucial antioxidants such as malondialdehyde. This heightened activity of antioxidant defenses offers a compelling explanation for the potential amelioration of cadmium toxicity and concurrent enhan...

Protective effect of cornuside on OGD/R injury in SH-SY5Y cells and its underlying mechanism
In this study, we treated SH-SY5Y cells with OGD/R to simulated ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Using high-throughput transcriptome sequencing, differentially expressed genes were analyzed in the OGD/R group versus the OGD/R + Cornuside (10 μmol/L) group to explore the neuroprotective mechanisms of Cornuside. The differentially expressed genes were mainly enriched in apoptosis signaling pathway, cell cycle, DNA damage and repair, and p38/JNK MAPK and p53 signaling pathways. The results showed that OGD/R significantly reduced the survival of SH-SY5Y cells, induced apoptosis, disrupted the nucleus, promoted the release o...
