H‐Type hypertension, stroke and diabetes in China: Opportunities for primary prevention / H

A Statistical Analysis of a Traffic-Light Food Rating System to Promote Healthy Nutrition and Body Weight
Conclusion: The food rating color-coded system identifies food items with superior nutrition, and lower caloric density. The smartphone app, incorporating the system, has the potential to improve nutrition; reduce the risk of developing diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and stroke; and improve public health.

Sex hormones and ischemic stroke: a prospective cohort study and meta-analyses.
CONCLUSIONS: Extreme low endogenous testosterone concentrations were associated with high risk of IS in men, a risk mediated in part by body mass index and hypertension. Whether or not low testosterone is a causal factor for IS or merely a biomarker of poor metabolic health is still not known. PMID: 26509870 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Diabetes mellitus related biomarker: the predictive role of growth-differentiation factor-15
Publication date: Available online 9 October 2015 Source:Diabetes & Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research & Reviews Author(s): Alexander E. Berezin Growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) is a stress-responsive cytokine, which belongs to super family of the transforming growth factor beta. GDF-15 is widely presented in the various cells (macrophages, vascular smooth muscle cells, adipocytes, cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, fibroblasts), tissues (adipose tissue, vessels, tissues of central and peripheral nervous system) and organs (heart, brain, liver, placenta) and it plays an important role in the ...

Evidence-Based Guideline of the German Nutrition Society: Fat Intake and Prevention of Selected Nutrition-Related Diseases.
Abstract As nutrition-related chronic diseases have become more and more frequent, the importance of dietary prevention has also increased. Dietary fat plays a major role in human nutrition, and modification of fat and/or fatty acid intake could have a preventive potential. The aim of the guideline of the German Nutrition Society (DGE) was to systematically evaluate the evidence for the prevention of the widespread diseases obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, dyslipoproteinaemia, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and cancer through the intake of fat or fatty acids. The main res...

Social Determinants of Health in Adults with Type 2 Diabetes–Contribution of Mutable and Immutable Factors
Type 2 diabetes affects more than 29 million people in the US, with an estimated 8.1 million individuals having undiagnosed type 2 diabetes and an estimated 86 million Americans diagnosed with prediabetes [1]. In 2012, costs associated with type 2 diabetes totaled $245 billion, including direct and indirect costs [1]. The remarkable cost of type 2 diabetes can be attributed to various complications and comorbid conditions associated with this chronic illness, including hypo- and hyperglycemia, high blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol, heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease, and amputations [1].

Sex-Specific Differential in Risk of Diabetes-Related Macrovascular Outcomes
In conclusion, diabetes is associated with a slightly higher risk of cardiovascular disease in women compared to men. Future studies should further explore the reasons underlying imperfect use of medications that lower cardiovascular risk in both women and men with diabetes.

H‐type hypertension, stroke and diabetes in China: Opportunities for primary prevention
Abstract In summary, the CSPPT, with its large sample size and unique study design has provided a definitive answer regarding the role of folic acid supplementation in conjunction with anti‐hypertension therapy in the primary prevention of stroke. Further studies are needed to examine the joint effect of anti‐hypertensive treatment and folic acid supplementation on the development or progression of T2DM as well as vascular complications, particularly in populations without folic acid fortification. If these relationships can be established and underlying mechanisms elucidated, the implications for clinical and public h...

Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of the Diagnosis and Treatment of Primary Aldosteronism in Japan
We examined whether diagnosing and treating hidden PA in hypertensive population was cost-effective compared with suboptimal treatment. Our hypothetical patient was a 50-year-old man diagnosed with stage I–III hypertension. We established a Markov decision model based on plausible clinical pathways and prognoses of PA. We applied cost-effectiveness analysis comparing a comprehensive diagnostic strategy for PA (measurement of plasma aldosterone/renin ratio, 2 loading tests, imaging, and selective adrenal venous sampling) with a suboptimal strategy to manage hypertension by medication unless the typical signs of PA or othe...

Sleep apnea syndrome in endocrine clinics
Abstract Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a chronic condition with a high prevalence (up to 7 % of the general population) characterized by frequent episodes of upper airway collapse while sleeping. Left untreated, OSAS can cause severe complications, including systemic hypertension, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and abnormal glucose metabolism. This review aims to summarize the close links between OSAS, endocrinology, and metabolism. In patients with metabolic syndrome, OSAS is an independent risk factor for the onset of type 2 diabetes and a worsening glycemic control. The accumulation of adipose ti...

Normocalcaemic, vitamin D sufficient hyperparathyroidism ‐ high prevalence and low morbidity in the general population A long‐term follow‐up study, the WHO MONICA project, Gothenburg, Sweden
ConclusionsThis small random population study showed that nHPT was common, 11% at follow‐up. Only one individual developed mild hypercalcaemia in 13 years. Previous S‐PTH was predictive of nHPT and hypertension was prevalent, but no increase in hard end points was seen over a 17‐year period. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
