Reaching low-density lipoprotein cholesterol treatment targets in stable coronary artery disease: Determinants and prognostic impact.
CONCLUSIONS: In this observational study, only a minority of stable CAD patients had LDL-C<70mg/dL. The patients who reached their LDL-C goal had the lowest risk of cardiovascular events. PMID: 29198936 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Factors that may Account for Cardiovascular Risk Reduction with a Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 Inhibitor, Vildagliptin, in Young Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
ConclusionBased on our findings, it can be hypothesized that the positive effects of vildagliptin on SBP, LDL cholesterol, hypoglycemia and weight observed in younger, but not in older patients could be associated with the lower risk of MACE in younger patients with T2DM.FundingNovartis.

Factors Associated with Intima-Media Complex Thickness of the Common Carotid Artery in Japanese Noncardioembolic Stroke Patients with Hyperlipidemia: The J-STARS Echo Study.
CONCLUSION: Baseline mean and maximum values of carotid IMT in Japanese noncardioembolic stroke patients with hyperlipidemia were 0.89±0.15 mm and 1.19±0.32 mm, respectively, which were similar to those previously reported from Western countries. Age, smoking, hypertension, HDL cholesterol, and diabetes mellitus were associated with mean IMT, and those, except for hypertension, were associated with maximum IMT. Risk factors, vascular lesion distribution, outcome and recurrence of strokes due to intracranial atherosclerosis: One year data from Hyderabad stroke registry
Conclusion: Risk factors, distribution of vascular lesions and high recurrence of stroke due to ICAS in this study is similar to that reported from other Asian countries. Aggressive medical management and risk factor control remains the best strategy for preventing recurrence.

Clinical Characteristics and Long-Term Outcomes of Rotational Atherectomy - J2T Multicenter Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: This study has provided the largest Japanese dataset for long-term follow-up of RA. Although RA in calcified lesions appears feasible with a high rate of procedural success, a high incidence of MACE was observed. PMID: 28931790 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Atherogenic index of plasma is positively associated with the risk of all-cause death in elderly women : A  10-year follow-up.
CONCLUSIONS: The AIP is positively associated with the risk of all-cause death in elderly women with arterial hypertension independent of age, smoking habits, statin therapy and comorbidities. PMID: 28913629 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Transient ischemic attack and ischemic stroke patients with or without prior stroke
ConclusionsBoth in TIA and IS, vascular risk factors were more common in patients with a history of stroke compared with those without. In contrast to other secondary preventive medications, OAC treatment in the presence of AF was underutilized in patients with a history of stroke.

Changes in the prevalence of statin use in Germany - findings from national health interview and examination surveys 1997-1999 and 2008-2011.
CONCLUSION: The increase in the prevalence of statin use in Germany between the two national health surveys (1997-1999 and 2008-2011) reflects the implementation of current guideline recommendations without evidence for inequalities according to gender, education, type of health insurance or region of residence. These population-based data add to information on statin prescription obtained from statutory health insurance data. Limitations of survey-based information derive from potential misclassification and selection bias as well as large time gaps between the survey periods. Further studies are needed to examine why the...

Impact of Ezetimibe on the Rate of Cardiovascular-Related Hospitalizations and Associated Costs Among Patients With a Recent Acute Coronary Syndrome: Results From the IMPROVE-IT Trial (Improved Reduction of Outcomes: Vytorin Efficacy International Trial) Original Articles
Conclusions— Addition of ezetimibe to statin therapy in patients with a recent acute coronary syndrome leads to reductions in cardiovascular-related hospitalizations and associated costs, with the greatest cost offsets in high-risk patients. These cost reductions may completely offset the cost of the drug once ezetimibe becomes generic, and may lead to cost savings from the perspective of the healthcare system, if treatment with ezetimibe is targeted to high-risk patients. Race-Sex Differences in Statin Use and Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Control Among People With Diabetes Mellitus in the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke Study Health Services and Outcomes Research
BackgroundStatin therapy is a cornerstone of cardiovascular disease risk reduction for people with diabetes mellitus. Past reports have shown race‐sex differences in statin use in general populations, but statin patterns by race and sex in those with diabetes mellitus have not been thoroughly studied. Methods and ResultsOur sample of 4288 adults ≥45 years of age with diagnosed diabetes mellitus who had low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‐C)>100 mg/dL or were taking statins recruited for the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke study from 2003 to 2007. Exposures included race‐sex groups (w...

Effect of Addition of a Statin to Warfarin on Thromboembolic Events in Japanese Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation and Diabetes Mellitus
Statins have been shown to decrease stroke risk in patients with cardiovascular risk factors, but not to prevent recurrence of ischemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). The present subanalysis aimed to clarify the efficacy of combined use of warfarin and statins in nonvalvular AF (NVAF) patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), diabetes mellitus (DM) or hypertension. The effects of adding statins to warfarin were compared with those of warfarin alone in NVAF patients with the data set of J-RHYTHM Registry, a prospective, observational study with a 2-year follow-up.

Association Between Diabetes and 1-Year Adverse Clinical Outcomes in a Multinational Cohort of Ambulatory Patients With Chronic Heart Failure: Results From the ESC-HFA Heart Failure Long-Term Registry
CONCLUSIONS The presence of diabetes markedly increases the risk of 1-year adverse clinical outcomes in outpatients with CHF independent of multiple common risk factors. More effective and personalized treatment for diabetes should be considered in this particularly high-risk patient population.
