Benchmarking institutional geriatric hip fracture management: a prelude to a care quality improvement initiative
ConclusionThis study emphasizes the importance of early admission and fast provision of surgical fixation to reduce mortality and morbidity. Benchmarking institutional practices allows for defining the evidence-practice gaps and barriers to best practice implementation. This is an essential step to begin care quality improvement for geriatric patients with proximal femur fragility fractures. (Source: European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology)

Factors associated with pressure ulcer and dehydration in long-term care settings in Ontario, Canada
by Mary Crea-Arsenio, Andrea Baumann, Valentina Antonipillai, Noori Akhtar-Danesh Pressure ulcers and dehydration are common conditions among residents of long-term care facilities that result in negative health effects. They have been associated with signs of neglect and increased 30-day mortality among LTC residents. However, they are both preventable and with proper care can be effectively managed and treated. We conducted a retrospective cohort study to examine factors associated with pressure ulcers and dehydration among long-term care residents in the province of Ontario, Canada. Results indicated that close to one-...

Prevalence of hospital-acquired pressure injuries in intensive care units of the Eastern Mediterranean region: a systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: This systematic review and meta-analysis of the pertinent peer-reviewed literature revealed a high prevalence of hospital-acquired pressure injuries of 16% in intensive care units of Eastern Mediterranean region. Therefore, it is necessary for health policymakers and managers in Eastern Mediterranean Region to take necessary measures to prevent the incidence of Pressure ulcers in hospitals, especially in ICUs.PMID:38263177 | PMC:PMC10804626 | DOI:10.1186/s13037-023-00384-7 (Source: Patient Safety in Surgery)

The impact of manual vacuum-assisted closure technique in wound healing: a case report
ConclusionAfter daily manual vacuum-assisted closure technique wound treatment for 21  days in diabetic ulcers, there was a noticeable decrease in the Bates–Jensen Wound Assessment Tool scores. Specifically, on day 5, the score was 38; on day 14, the score was 30; and on day 21, the score was 24. The use of the manual vacuum-assisted closure technique in wound treatment demonstra ted significant improvements in diabetic ulcers. (Source: Journal of Medical Case Reports)

Ozonated Sunflower Oil (OSO) alleviates inflammatory responses in oxazolone-induced atopic dermatitis (AD)-like mice and LPS- treated RAW 264.7 cells
J Microbiol Biotechnol. 2024 Jan 12;34(4):1-10. doi: 10.4014/jmb.2310.10037. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOzone, a highly reactive oxidant molecule, is widely used as a complementary therapy for various skin diseases, including wound healing, pressure ulcers, diabetic foot, and infections. However, there is limited research on the effectiveness of ozone for atopic dermatitis (AD). Ozonated sunflower oil (OSO) is an active ingredient obtained from partially ozonated sunflower oil (SO). OSO markedly reduced the LPS-induced increase in IL-1β and nitric oxide (NO) levels in RAW 264.7 mouse macrophage cells. Oxazolone (OXZ) w...

Do individuals from an SCI-specialized rehabilitation facility have fewer secondary health conditions than those from a non-SCI-specialized rehabilitation facility? Analysis of the InSCI database from a middle-income country
CONCLUSION: Attending an SSRF was significantly associated with having fewer SHCs, specifically, bladder dysfunctions, sexual dysfunctions, and pressure ulcers. These results suggest the importance of having SSRF in middle-income countries for delivering effective care to people with SCI and standardized education to health care providers.PMID:38251980 | DOI:10.1080/10790268.2023.2289690 (Source: Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine)

Pressure Injuries and Chronic Wounds
Pressure injuries (also referred to as bedsores, decubitus ulcers, pressure sores, or pressure ulcers) were designated a geriatric syndrome in the late twentieth century, as they satisfy the criteria of being highly prevalent, multifactorial, and associated with substantial morbidity and poor outcomes.1,2 In the ensuing decades the topic of pressure injuries lagged as research and knowledge of other geriatric syndromes, such as delirium, dementia, and falls, moved forward.3 In the face of increased prevalence of chronic diseases, other wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers, arterial and venous ulcers, and postsurgical and m...

Sensors, Vol. 24, Pages 524: A Custom-Tailored Multichannel Pressure Monitoring System Designed for Experimental Surgical Model of Abdominal Compartment Syndrome
Norbert Nemeth In experimental medicine, a wide variety of sensory measurements are used. One of these is real-time precision pressure measurement. For comparative studies of the complex pathophysiology and surgical management of abdominal compartment syndrome, a multichannel pressure measurement system is essential. An important aspect is that this multichannel pressure measurement system should be able to monitor the pressure conditions in different tissue layers, and compartments, under different settings. We created a 12-channel positive–negative sensor system for simultaneous detection of pressure c...

Differences in bacterial flora detected during negative pressure wound treatment of different origin of infected wounds in stick and sponge cultures
Orv Hetil. 2024 Jan 14;165(2):59-68. doi: 10.1556/650.2024.32947. Print 2024 Jan 14.ABSTRACTBevezetés: A sebekben jelen lévő kórokozók különböző sebességgel növekednek, kölcsönhatásba léphetnek egymással, hogy elősegítsék a szaporodásukat, és biofilmképző tulajdonságaik révén kolóniákat képeznek, gátolva az antibiotikumok hatékonyságát és a sebgyógyulást. A negatív nyomású sebkezelés csökkenti a seb baktériumterhelését. Célkitűzés: Tanulmányunk célja volt, hogy felmérjük a pálcika- és szivacsmintás tenyésztések közötti esetleges eltéréseket a fertőzött sebek neg...

Back to Basics: Pediatric Casting Techniques, Pearls, and Pitfalls
Iowa Orthop J. 2023 Dec;43(2):79-89.ABSTRACTCast application is a critical portion of pediatric orthopaedic surgery training and is being performed by a growing number of non-orthopaedic clinicians including primary care physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs). Given the tremendous remodeling potential of pediatric fractures, correct cast placement often serves as the definitive treatment in this age population as long as alignment is maintained. Proper cast application technique is typically taught through direct supervision from more senior clinicians, with little literature and few resources available for prov...
