Region-Based Semi-Two-Stream Convolutional Neural Networks for Pressure Ulcer Recognition
AbstractPressure ulcers are a common, painful, costly, and often preventable complication associated with prolonged immobility in bedridden patients. It is a significant health problem worldwide because it is frequently seen in inpatients and has high treatment costs. For the treatment to be effective and to ensure an international standardization for all patients, it is essential that the diagnosis of pressure ulcers is made in the early stages and correctly. Since invasive methods of obtaining information can be painful for patients, different methods are used to make a correct diagnosis. Image-based diagnosis method is ...

Nurses' barriers to the pressure ulcer risk assessment scales implementation: A phenomenological study
ConclusionThe findings of this study have uncovered three primary factors that have a detrimental impact on the utilization of risk assessment scales by nurses, that is their lack knowledge on pressure ulcer risk assessment scales; a shortage of staff and equipment; and an absence of policies/guidelines. The findings from this study provide valuable implications for guiding quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing the standard of care in Namibia and other resource-limited settings. The Impact of Rationing Nursing Care on Patient Safety: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSIONS RONC has a negative impact on patient safety outcomes. It is essential for healthcare organizations to implement effective strategies to prevent the RONC. Improving staffing levels, workload management, and communication amo0ng healthcare providers are some of the strategies that can support this.PMID:38196186 | PMC:PMC10787575 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.942031 (Source: Medical Science Monitor)

A bioengineering investigation of cervical collar design and fit: Implications on skin health
The occiput is at increased risk of cervical collar-related pressure ulcers during supine immobilisation, especially for Stiffneck extrication collars. Lined open-cell foams could be used to minimise skin humidity and increase comfort. (Source: Clinical Biomechanics)

Patient positioning on the operating table and patient safety: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Harmful incidents related to patient positioning occur and consequences can be severe. The operating room teams should be aware of the harms and prevent and treat them seriously.IMPACT: This review underlines that research is sparse on patient positioning on operating table and harmful incidents. There is a need for high-quality, well-designed studies that focus on harmful incidents and prevention of harm related to patient positioning.PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: No patient or public contribution, as this is a review of previous research.PMID:38186052 | DOI:10.1111/jan.16049 (Source: Adv Data)

Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry methods for quantification of total and free antibiotic concentrations in serum and exudate from patients with post-sternotomy deep sternal wound infection receiving negative pressure wound therapy
CONCLUSION: This method can accurately quantify the total and free concentrations of 16 antibiotics. Comparison of concentration ratios between serum and exudates allows for monitoring individual antibiotics' penetration capacity in patients receiving NPWT.PMID:38185284 | DOI:10.1016/j.cca.2023.117704 (Source: International Journal of Clinical Chemistry)

Autoimmune encephalitis and paraneoplastic encephalitis: difficulties in diagnosis and management in the ICU
Rom J Morphol Embryol. 2023 Oct-Dec;64(4):475-482. doi: 10.47162/RJME.64.4.03.ABSTRACTAutoimmune encephalitis (AIE) represents a category of relatively newly described neurological disorders associated with an increasing prevalence, a significant impact on the healthcare system, and a high rate of intensive care unit (ICU) admission. This category of diseases often requires prompt treatment, even before a definitive diagnosis is established. In the ICU, patients present with nonspecific signs and symptoms for AIE, which pose challenges in both management and diagnosis. Patients frequently exhibit dysautonomia, severe physi...
