In vitro inhibition of 5- α reductase and in vivo suppression of benign prostatic hyperplasia by Physalis angulata ethyl acetate extract
Fitoterapia. 2024 Apr 8:105950. doi: 10.1016/j.fitote.2024.105950. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe inhibitory effect against 5-α reductase of the ethyl acetate (EA) extract from Physalis angulata was evaluated in vitro using mouse prostate homogenates, and the suppression of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) was assessed in a mouse model of testosterone-induced BPH. The EA extract exhibited a potentially inhibitory effect on 5-α reductase with an IC50 of 197 μg/ml. In BPH mice, the EA extract at a dose of 12 mg/kg was comparable to finasteride 5 mg/kg in suppressing BPH in terms of reducing absolute enlarged prostate...

New steroids with anti-inflammatory activity from the whole plants of < em > Physalis minima < /em >
Nat Prod Res. 2024 Apr 10:1-7. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2024.2340048. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTwo new steroids, phyminiolide J (1) and phyministerol A (2), along with three known compounds (3-5) were isolated from the whole plants of Physalis minima. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic analysis and the absolute configurations were determined by using computational ECD calculations. All isolates were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activity via inhibiting the production of nitric oxide (NO) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cells, and t...

Effect of saline stress on the metabolic profile and antidiabetic potential of < em > Physalis peruviana < /em >
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of applying NaCl (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 mM) to goldenberry plants on the metabolite profile and hypoglycaemic potential of both fruit and leaf decoctions. The findings demonstrated that NaCl increases the phenolic content, flavonoids, and hydrolysable polyphenols in leaf decoctions. Additionally, four alkaloids previously unreported in Physalis peruviana were identified. Saline stress improved the profile of extractable and non-extractable phenolic compounds in both leaves and fruits. Furthermore, incubation with decoctions of stressed leaves at a concentration of 0.50 mg/mL reduced...

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 267: Meta-Transcriptomic Analysis Uncovers the Presence of Four Novel Viruses and Multiple Known Virus Genera in a Single Hibiscus rosa-sinensis Plant in Colombia
ohn Hammond Hibiscus is not native to Colombia but well suited to its arid soil and dry climates. A single hibiscus plant from Risaralda, showing black spots on upper and lower sides of its leaves, was collected for virome analysis using meta-transcriptomic high-throughput sequencing technology. Bioinformatic analysis identified 12.5% of the total reads in the Ribo-Zero cDNA library which mapped to viral genomes. BLAST searches revealed the presence of carlavirus, potexvirus, and of known members of the genera Betacarmovirus, Cilevirus, Nepovirus, and Tobamovirus in the sample; confirmed by RT-PCR with virus-specific p...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 184: Structural Studies of Mexican Husk Tomato (Physalis ixocarpa) Fruit Cutin
-Patiño Green tomato (Physalis ixocarpa) is a specie native to Mexico, and it is known as “tomatillo” or “husk tomato”. The fruit contains vitamins, minerals, phenolic compounds, and steroidal lactones, presenting antimicrobial activity and antinarcotic effects. Therefore, it is not only used in traditional Mexican cuisine, but also in traditional medicine to relieve some discomforts such as fever, cough, and amygdalitis. However, it is a perishable fruit whose shelf life is very short. As a part of the peel, cuticle, and epicuticular waxes represent the most imp...
