Examining pain, function, behavioral symptoms and associations with engagement in meaningful activity for residents with dementia in assisted living
CONCLUSION: Findings from this study show that pain is a significant factor that is negatively associated with residents' engagement in meaningful activity. Ongoing research is needed to help improve pain management for residents with dementia in assisted living and support their engagement in meaningful activity.PMID:38651198 | DOI:10.1080/13607863.2024.2342963 (Source: Aging and Mental Health)

Transversus Abdominis Plane Block versus Epidural Anesthesia for Pain Management Post-Caesarean Delivery: A Pilot Study
CONCLUSION: The TAP block proves advantageous in mitigating postoperative pain for women post-caesarean delivery, particularly in the initial 6 postpartum hours. This relief promotes early mother-infant bonding and facilitates breastfeeding.PMID:38650746 | PMC:PMC11033210 | DOI:10.2147/LRA.S444947 (Source: Local and Regional Anesthesia)

Surgical Techniques in Non-Traumatic Midcarpal Instability: Evaluating the Dorsal Capsulodesis and Three-Ligament Tenodesis Technique
CONCLUSIONS: Both 3LT and dorsal capsulodesis demonstrate promising results for addressing non-traumatic MCI. However, considering the quicker recovery and faster return to work associated with dorsal capsulodesis, we recommend favoring capsulodesis over 3LT when both surgical options are deemed suitable for the patient.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III.PMID:38652927 | DOI:10.1097/PRS.0000000000011489 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Cingulotomy for Intractable Pain: A Systematic Review of an Underutilized Procedure
Cureus. 2024 Mar 22;16(3):e56746. doi: 10.7759/cureus.56746. eCollection 2024 Mar.ABSTRACTPain management is a critical aspect of cancer treatment and palliative care, where pain can significantly impact quality of life. Chronic pain, which affects a significant number of people worldwide, remains a prevalent and challenging symptom for patients. While medications and psychosocial support systems play a role in pain management, surgical and radiological interventions, including cingulotomy, may be necessary for refractory cases. Cingulotomy, a neurosurgical procedure targeting the cingulate gyrus, aims to disrupt neural pa...

Recent United States Developments in the Pharmacological Treatment of Dry Eye Disease
AbstractDry eye disease (DED) can arise from a variety of factors, including inflammation, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), and neurosensory abnormalities. Individuals with DED may exhibit a range of clinical signs, including tear instability, reduced tear production, and epithelial disruption, that are driven by different pathophysiological contributors. Those affected often report a spectrum of pain and visual symptoms that can impact physical and mental aspects of health, placing an overall burden on an individual ’s well-being. This cumulative impact of DED on an individual’s activities and on society underscores...

Use of General Practitioner Services Among Workers with Work-Related Low Back Pain: A Systematic Review
ConclusionOnly seven studies met the eligibility indicating a relative lack of evidence, despite the acknowledged important role that GPs play in the care of workers with low back pain. More research is needed to understand the prevalence, patterns and determinants to support effective service delivery and policy development. (Source: Journal of Occupational Rehabilitation)

Patient Perspectives on Outpatient versus Inpatient Cervical Ripening for Induction of Labor
Conclusion Outpatient cervical ripening can be a patient-centered solution to obstetric throughput challenges arising from increased numbers of inductions. Those who underwent outpatient cervical ripening had similar perceived control to those who underwent inpatient cervical ripening, suggesting that individual patient preferences are most important in determining the optimal setting for care. The patients' reported experiences identified focus areas for process improvement efforts and future research, including improving patient education regarding expectations and innovating new pain management strategies for cervical...

Comparison of analgesic efficacy of ibuprofen and dexketoprofen in pain management of long bone fractures: a prospective, randomized, double-blind study
ConclusionIbuprofen 800 mg demonstrated superior analgesic efficacy at 60 and 120 min compared to Dex in long bone fractures. These findings suggest ibuprofen ’s potential as an effective pain management option in emergency departments. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Do the management and functional outcomes of the surgically treated spinal fractures change in suicidal jumpers?
ConclusionPsychiatric disorders are more common in patients in the suicidal jumpers. The presence of underlying psychiatric problems adversely affects the postoperative functional outcomes of patients with surgically treated spinal fractures. A multidisciplinary approach together with raising awareness in this way can improve the clinical outcomes after orthopedic treatment, even if there is physical disability. Lumbar Spinal Stenosis: Diagnosis and Management
Am Fam Physician. 2024 Apr;109(4):350-359.ABSTRACTLumbar spinal stenosis is a clinical syndrome that affects more than 200,000 people in the United States annually. It is a common cause of chronic insidious low back pain, especially in older patient populations (mean age = 64 years). Lumbar spinal stenosis is a degenerative condition of the spine leading to narrowing in the spaces around the neurovascular bundles and the classic symptom of low back pain that radiates to the buttocks and lower extremities bilaterally. It is typically a progressive waxing and waning process that may deteriorate over years. The pain is typica...
