Clinical outcomes of conservative versus surgical treatment for patients with proximal humeral fracture before physiotherapy
This study aimed to compare kinesiophobia, pain, range of motion (ROM), shoulder function, and Quality of life (QoL) in patients treated with either conservative (CT) versus surgical (ST) after PHF. In addition, it aimed to determine correlations between fear of movement and seconder outcome measures. This cross-sectional study enrolled the patients having 5-6 weeks (being permitted active movement) after being treated either CT or ST and receiving no physical therapy. Pain, passive and active ROMs, shoulder function, fear of movement, and QoL were evaluated. 42 patients were recruited. Kinesiophobia scores were similar (p...

Renal artery occlusion in a young woman - a tale of mysterious thrombosis
CONCLUSION: Renal artery thrombosis in young people is extremely rare and presents a diagnostic and management challenge requiring input from multiple teams including nephrology, rheumatology, paediatrics and vascular surgery. Systemic coagulopathy and vasculitis are differentials against anatomical aetiologies such as fibromuscular dysplasia. Our case adds to the limited literature regarding this in the young population. Renal artery thrombosis with occlusion in young people is very rare and is most often associated with a systemic coagulopathic disorder, such as antiphospholipid syndrome or structural pathology of the re...

Talonavicular-cuneiform arthrodesis in the management of Mueller-Weiss Syndrome: a retrospective case series
This study aimed to present clinical and radiological outcomes of talonavicular-cuneiform (TNC) arthrodesis in the treatment of patients with MWS. A retrospective study was performed on 8 consecutive patients (6 female, 2 male; mean age = 50 years; range = 33-64) who underwent TNC arthrodesis using plate fixation with autologous bone grafting for the treatment of MWS. To evaluate clinical status, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) Ankle-Midfoot Score was performed immediately preoperatively and at the final follow-up. In radiographic evaluation, talus-first metatarsal angle (Meary's angle) was measured...

Dorsal wrist plating for the management of intra-articular distal radius fractures
Acta Orthop Belg. 2024 Mar;90(1):110-114. doi: 10.52628/90.1.8058.ABSTRACTThe aim of the study was to evaluate the results of Dorsal Wrist Plating in intra-articular distal radius fractures with a dorsal displacement. In this prospective study, a single surgeon treated 20 patients with a (partially) intra-articular distal radius fracture with a dorsal rim avulsion or a dorsal Barton's type fragment. They all underwent an open reduction and internal fixation by Dorsal Wrist Plating. A total of 17 patients had a follow-up period of at least 12 months (mean follow- up of 17 months) and these patients were included in the stud...

Evaluation of patient reported outcome measures and costs of managing osteoarthritis of the hip
The objective of this study is to evaluate patient-report- ed outcomes and hospital costs of hip replacement six months after surgery. Both generic (EQ-5D) and specific (HOOS) PROMs of general hospital patients undergoing hip replacement surgery in 2021 were conducted. The results of these PROMs were then combined with financial and health management data. The mean difference (SD) in QALYs between the preoperative and postoperative phases is 0.20 QALYs (0.32 QALYs). The average cost (SD) of all stays is €4,792 (€1,640). Amongst the five dimensions evaluated in the EQ-5D health questionnaire, the 'pain' dimension seems ...

Dental practitioners' knowledge, management practices, and attitudes toward collaboration in the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders: a mixed-methods study
CONCLUSIONS: The study successfully validated a questionnaire to understand dental practitioners' knowledge regarding physical therapy in TMD treatment. The study identified significant gaps in knowledge and a lack of collaboration between dentists and physiotherapists. The limited referral practices highlighted in the study, along with insights from dentist interviews, emphasize the need for improved interdisciplinary approaches to managing TMDs within dental practice.PMID:38671353 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-024-02398-1 (Source: Primary Care)

McArdle's disease revealed by acute low back pain
We report the case of a 17-year-old male patient who was referred to the emergency department for the management of acute inflammatory low back pain, without traumatic context, associated with an increase of CK at 66,336 UI/L (N<192UI/L) and a CRP at 202mg/L. The immunological assessment was negative and the spinal MRI showed images in favor of necrotizing fasciitis affecting the erector spinae muscles, among others. Faced with the description of difficulties in practicing physical activities since childhood and a non-ischaemic forearm exercise test showing no elevation in lactacidemia, genetic tests were carried out, f...

Investigating the safety and feasibility of osteopathic manipulative medicine in hospitalized children and adolescent young adults with cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Hospitalized children and AYAs with cancer received OMT safely with decreased pain in their reported somatic dysfunction(s). These findings support further investigation into the safety, feasibility, and efficacy of implementing OMT in the pediatric oncology inpatient setting and to a broader inpatient pediatric oncology population.PMID:38669608 | DOI:10.1515/jom-2024-0013 (Source: Pain Physician)

Assessment of Clinical Outcomes in Patients With Osteoarthritis: Analysis From the UK Medical Cannabis Registry
This study aims to assess changes in validated patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and CBMP clinical safety in patients with osteoarthritis. A prospective case series from the UK Medical Cannabis Registry was analyzed. Primary outcomes were changes in the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI), McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ2), EQ-5D-5L, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) questionnaire, and Single-Item Sleep Quality Scale (SQS) at 1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-ups from baseline. Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events v.4.0 was used for adverse event (AE) analysis. Statistical significance was defined as p < 0.05...
