Differential relationships between physical activity and pain phenotypes in individuals with spinal cord injury
CONCLUSION: Differential relationships exist between pain phenotypes and MVPA in individuals with SCI. Pain location differed between the subgroups of nociceptive pain, which we presume may indicate the presence of nociplastic pain in some individuals. These results may contribute to the advancement of personalized pain management by targeting non-pharmacological interventions for specific pain phenotypes.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT05236933..PMID:38661677 | DOI:10.1080/10790268.2024.2344315 (Source: Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine)

Return to Sports After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction
Perm J. 2024 Apr 25:1-7. doi: 10.7812/TPP/23.132. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAnterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are one of the most common orthopedic injuries among athletes. Although a small proportion of patients with isolated tears can return to sports after completing a nonsurgical rehabilitation program, ACL reconstruction is frequently recommended for young athletes, especially those with concomitant knee injuries or symptomatic knee instability. Alongside emerging evidence for the effect of prehabilitation, the current standard of care for postoperative ACL physical therapy includes pain control, range of mot...

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed by a surgical care practitioner: a review of outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: There is a paucity of published data on surgical outcomes of procedures performed by SCPs. With a structured, supervised approach, SCPs could be trained to take on more complex procedures and further strengthen the surgical workforce. This study demonstrates that elective LC can be safely performed by an appropriately trained and supervised SCP.PMID:38660827 | DOI:10.1308/rcsann.2023.0058 (Source: Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England)

Surgical treatment of painful neuroma in amputated and non-amputated patients: does the level of neurotomy affect clinical outcomes?
CONCLUSION: DN seemed to give better results in amputees but there were confusing factors related to associated lesions. In other situations, the non-inferiority of PN was demonstrated. PN could be of interest for treating neuromas of superficial sensory nerves, for avoiding direct revision of a well-fitted stump and in conjunction with TMR.PMID:38662211 | DOI:10.1007/s00068-024-02529-4 (Source: Hand Surgery)

Comparative Analysis of Stereotactic Radiation Therapy and Conventional Radiation Therapy in Cancer Pain Control: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSION: In summary, stereotactic radiation therapy (SRT) has improved in achieving complete pain relief while exhibiting a decreased probability of delivering stationary pain compared to conventional radiation therapy (CRT). Nevertheless, it is crucial in future research to address a noteworthy limitation, specifically, the risk of vertebral compression fracture.PMID:38664177 | DOI:10.1016/j.clon.2024.04.004 (Source: Cancer Control)

Transdermal Opioids and the Quality of Life of the Cancer Patient: A Systematic Literature Review
CONCLUSIONS: Transdermal therapy was suggested to have several advantages over oral opioid therapy in enhancing cancer patients' QoL. These benefits span various dimensions, including pain management, physical functioning, mental health, vitality, overall patient improvement, anger/aversion, strength/activity, general QoL, cognitive and emotional functions, fatigue, and insomnia.PMID:38659244 | DOI:10.1177/10600280241247363 (Source: The Annals of Pharmacotherapy)

The pharmacist's role in optimizing medication management before, during, and after minimally invasive and bariatric surgery
CONCLUSION: Pharmacist contributions to perioperative medication management for MIS procedures can improve care as surgical patients navigate transitions through the perioperative setting. Pharmacists can further incorporate medication expertise through development and implementation of institutional MIS protocols within the context of ERPs. As such, any pharmacist should feel empowered to aid in the care of surgical patients.PMID:38662339 | DOI:10.1093/ajhp/zxae111 (Source: American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy : AJHP)
