Urinary volatile organic compound metabolites and COPD among US adults: mixture, interaction and mediation analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings provide novel evidence suggesting that VOCs may have adverse associations with COPD in the general population, with N, N- Dimethylformamide and 1,3-Butadiene contributing most. These findings underscore the significance of understanding the potential health risks associated with VOC mixture and emphasize the need for targeted interventions to mitigate the adverse effects on COPD risk.PMID:38702703 | DOI:10.1186/s12940-024-01086-y (Source: Cancer Control)

Thiocarbonyl-Bridged N-Heterotriangulenes for Energy Efficient Triplet Photosensitization: A Theoretical Perspective
Chemphyschem. 2024 May 3:e202400371. doi: 10.1002/cphc.202400371. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRigid metal-free organic molecules are of high demand for various triplet harvesting applications. Inefficient intersystem crossing (ISC) due to large singlet-triplet gap ([[EQUATION]]) and small spin-orbit coupling (SOC) between lowest excited singlet and triplet in these molecules often limits their efficiency. We computationally investigate excited-state electronic structures, fluorescence and ISC rates in several thiiocarbonyl-bridged N-heterotriangulene ([[EQUATION]]S-HTG) with systematically increased S-content ([[EQUATION...

Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek. 2024 May 3;117(1):75. doi: 10.1007/s10482-024-01973-x.ABSTRACTBiogenic nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as promising therapeutic formulations in effective drug delivery. Despite of various positive attributes, these NPs are often conjugated with various cytotoxic organic fluorophores for bioimaging, thereby reducing its effectiveness as a potential carrier. Herein, we aim to formulate biogenic fluorescent pigmented polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) NPs from Rhodanobacter sp. strain KT31 (OK001852) for drug delivery. The bacterial strain produced 0.5 g L-1 of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) from 2.04 g L-1 of ...

Chemosphere. 2024 May 1:142083. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.142083. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDissolve organic matters (DOM) usually showed negative effect on the removal of inorganic arsenic (As) in groundwater by electrochemical approaches, yet which parts of sub-component within DOM played the role was lack of evidence. Herein, we investigated the effects of land-source humic-like acid (HA) on groundwater As(III) removal using air cathode iron electrocoagulation, based on the parallel factor analysis of three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix and statistical methods. Our results showed that the land-source ...

Phosphorus immobilization/release behavior of lanthanum-modified bentonite amended sediment under the dual effects of pH and dissolved organic carbon
Chemosphere. 2024 May 1:142221. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.142221. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLanthanum modified bentonite (LMB) is typical P-inactivating agent that has been applied in over 200 lakes. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and high pH restrict the phosphorus (P) immobilization performance of LMB. However, the P immobilization/release behaviors of LMB-amended sediment when suspended to overlying water with high pH and DOC have not yet been studied. In the present work, batch adsorption and long-term incubation experiments were performed to study the combined effects of pH and DOC on the P control by LMB. T...

The origin of betaine in mouse oocytes and preimplantation embryos †
Biol Reprod. 2024 May 3:ioae053. doi: 10.1093/biolre/ioae053. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBetaine has important roles in preimplantation mouse embryos, including as an organic osmolyte that functions in cell volume regulation in the early preimplantation stages and as a donor to the methyl pool in blastocysts. The origin of betaine in oocytes and embryos was largely unknown. Here, we found that betaine was present from the earliest stage of growing oocytes. Neither growing oocytes nor early preantral follicles could take up betaine, but antral follicles were able to transport betaine and supply the enclosed oocyte. Betai...

Controlling On-Surface Photoactivity: The Impact of π-Conjugation in Anhydride-Functionalized Molecules on a Semiconductor Surface
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2024 May 3:e202405983. doi: 10.1002/anie.202405983. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOn-surface synthesis has become a prominent method for growing low-dimensional carbon-based nanomaterials on metal surfaces. However, the necessity of decoupling organic nanostructures from metal substrates to exploit their properties requires either transfer methods or new strategies to perform reactions directly on inert surfaces. The use of on-surface light-induced reactions directly on semiconductor/insulating surfaces represents an alternative approach to address these challenges. Here, exploring the photochemical...

ß-Phenethylamine Synthesis via Latent Dual Electrophilicity of N-Pyridinium Aziridines
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2024 May 3:e202406335. doi: 10.1002/anie.202406335. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTß-Phenethylamines are widely represented in biologically and pharmacologically active organic small molecules. Here, we introduce N-pyridinium aziridines as latent dual electrophiles for the synthesis of ß-phenethylamines. Bromide-promoted ring opening generates ß-halopyridinium amines. Selective Ni-catalyzed C-C cross-coupling between organozinc nucleophiles and the benzylic C-Br electrophile affords a diverse family of ß-functionalized phenethylaminopyridinium salts, and coupling is stereoconvergent in the presen...

Switchable Dual Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Through-Space Conjugated Chiral Foldamers
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2024 May 2:e202407605. doi: 10.1002/anie.202407605. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOrganic materials with switchable dual circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) are highly desired because they can not only directly radiate tunable circularly polarized light themselves but also induce CPL for guests by providing chiral environment in self-assembled structures or serving as the hosts for energy transfer systems. However, most organic molecules only exhibit single CPL and it remains challenging to develop organic molecules with dual CPL. Herein, novel through-space conjugated chiral foldamers are const...

Organophotoelectrocatalytic C(sp < sup > 2 < /sup > )-H alkylation of heteroarenes with unactivated C(sp < sup > 3 < /sup > )-H compounds
Chem Commun (Camb). 2024 May 3. doi: 10.1039/d4cc01335b. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAn organophotoelectrocatalytic method for the C(sp2)-H alkylation of heteroarenes with unactivated C(sp3)-H compounds through dehydrogenation cross-coupling has been developed. The C(sp2)-H alkylation combines organic catalysis, photochemistry and electrochemistry, avoiding the need for external metal-reagents, HAT-reagents, and oxidants. This protocol exhibits good substrate tolerance and functional group compatibility, providing a straightforward and powerful pathway to access a variety of alkylated heteroarenes under green conditions....
