Spring Garden Street
That ' s actually the name of a street in Philadelphia where my paternal ancestors lived, but it seemed like a good title for this post. If I still had the energy to keep up the Windham County blog I would have put it there, but for now I ' ll just leave it here.Living in the temperate zone we do have to get through the winter, but our reward is spring, which you can ' t have otherwise. I got a load of horseshit from my neighbors last fall and now I ' m starting to spread it around. I planted a Concord grape next to my front porch, with a decent scoop of manure in the hole, and my idea is that it will grow up the column an...

More epistemology
Many people find it uncomfortable to live with deep mystery. They want their questions answered. Many people also need to be handed meaning and purpose on a platter -- it ' s too difficult to make their own, especially in the face of hardship and injustice. Making up stories that seem to satisfy the need for explanation and meaning is a temptation that many just can ' t resist. But for other people, testing stories against empirical reality is more important. Whatever dissatisfaction or psychological distress we suffer from choosing to live in reality is worth it to us, because we want the truth more than anything. On...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, December 18th 2023
In conclusion, given the relative safety and the favourable effects of aspirin, its use in cancer seems justified, and ethical implications of this imply that cancer patients should be informed of the present evidence and encouraged to raise the topic with their healthcare team. « Back to Top Aged Transplant Organs Cause Harm to Younger Recipients https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2023/12/aged-transplant-organs-cause-harm-to-younger-recipients/ Old tissues are dysfunctional in ways that young tissues are not. This has always been known in the context of organ transplants, but absent me...

HALD, a Human Aging and Longevity Knowledge Graph
For those who find use in such things, HALD is an interesting tool for exploration of the literature surrounding particular genes, proteins, lipids, and other molecules. The authors mined the literature and determined relationships between these various items, as well as their roles as biomarkers. At the high level, the life sciences find themselves afloat on a sea of data. It costs little to generate ever more data, and much more to try to analyze it, so the pace at which databases grow is somewhat faster than the pace at which various groups are organizing, analyzing, and obtaining useful insights from that data. ...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, December 4th 2023
This study produced a great deal of data that continues to be mined for insights into human aging and effects of calorie restriction in a long-lived species such as our own, to contrast with the sizable effects on health and longevity in short-lived species such as mice. In particular, and the topic for today, cellular senescence and its role in degenerative aging has garnered far greater interest in the research community in the years since the CALERIE study took place. Thus in today's open access paper, scientists examine CALERIE study data to find evidence for calorie restriction to reduce the burden of cellular ...

Inflammatory Mid-Old Cells in Tissues are Restored to More Youthful Function by Recombinant SLIT2
Researchers here note the existence of what they call "mid-old" cells, cells in tissue stroma that are on the path to becoming senescent, are not yet entered into the senescent state, but nonetheless produce constant inflammatory signaling that is disruptive to tissue structure and function. The researchers find that these cells respond positively to delivery of recombinant SLIT2, diminishing their bad behavior. In very old mice, this treatment resulted in improved muscle mass and function and greater animal activity. This is an interesting finding, and will need further investigation and replication to rule out other mech...

American Telemedicine Association Leaps Into Privacy and AI Policies
The computerization of daily life has evolved from a set of technical decisions to a matter of urgent public policy over the past few decades. The American Telemedicine Association (ATA) recently released two sets of principles that highlights its concerns in two prominent computing issues: privacy and AI. Of course, privacy and AI both make front-page news these days. Concerns over the data protection of individuals dates back to the 1970s. The issue takes on new urgency since evidence has emerged about the manipulation of voters and exploitation of children. AI became the subject of an international summit at Bletchley P...

How Could Digital Technology Make An Impact On Primary Care?
I truly hope that very soon I do not have to make an appointment at the GP when I suspect signs of a disease, but my GP will send me a message that she spotted something irregular in my latest test results and my digital health data, so I’d better visit. Let me show you in detail how primary care should be carried out in the future! Digital health should become an organic part of primary care in the future I live a fairly healthy life. I use data to improve my lifestyle and to make better decisions by optimising my sleep pattern, my physical, my cognitive or my emotional abilities; and I had several genetic tests....
