Nipah virus: Age and breathing difficulties increase the risk of disease spread
(Institut Pasteur) Nipah virus has been identified as an emerging infectious disease that may cause severe epidemics in the near future. Researchers from the Institut Pasteur, CNRS, icddr,b, and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, just showed that adult cases with respiratory symptoms transmit the virus to more individuals than other cases, and might therefore be targeted for interventions when the isolation of all suspected Nipah cases is not possible. This research paves the way to more efficient control measures. (Source: EurekAlert! - Infectious and Emerging Diseases)

Researchers explain how viral protein promotes deadly infection by Nipah and Hendra viruses
(Georgia State University) Researchers have identified how a viral protein, which plays a major role in causing deadly Nipah and Hendra virus infections, targets a critical function in human cells to suppress immune responses and promote fatal disease. (Source: EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health)

Super-resolution microscope reveals secrets of deadly Nipah virus
(University of British Columbia) The deadly Nipah virus and others like it assemble themselves in a much more haphazard manner than previously thought, new UBC research has found. The discovery could allow scientists to develop more effective vaccines and rule out many approaches to fighting these viruses. (Source: EurekAlert! - Infectious and Emerging Diseases)

Monash scientists show that highly lethal viruses hijack cellular defences against cancer
(Monash University) Henipaviruses are among the deadliest known viruses and have no effective treatments. They include Hendra, lethal to humans and horses, and the Nipah virus, a serious threat in parts of Asia. Researchers have now discovered that Henipaviruses hijack a mechanism used by cells to counter DNA damage and prevent harmful mutations (important in diseases like cancer). This finding adds insight into how viruses behave, and could lead to new targets for antivirals to treat them. (Source: EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health)
