Dozens in China Infected With New ‘Langya’ Virus Carried by Shrews
Nearly three dozen people in China have been sickened by a newly identified virus from the same family as the deadly Nipah and Hendra viruses, though there’s no evidence the pathogen can be transmitted from person-to-person. The virus, named Langya henipavirus or LayV, was found thanks to an early detection system for feverish people with a recent history of exposure to animals in eastern China. The patients—mainly farmers—also reported fatigue, cough, loss of appetite and aches, with several developing blood-cell abnormalities and signs of liver and kidney damage. All survived. Among the 35 patients, 26 ...

NIH launches clinical trial of mRNA Nipah virus vaccine
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, has launched an early-stage clinical trial evaluating an investigational vaccine to prevent infection with Nipah virus. The experimental vaccine is manufactured by Moderna, Inc., (Cambridge, Massachusetts) and was developed in collaboration with NIAID's Vaccine Research Center. It is based on a messenger RNA (mRNA) platform - a technology used in several approved COVID-19 vaccines. (Source: World Pharma News)

Professor Sarah Gilbert on the legacy of lockdown: We must ensure we are better prepared for future outbreaks
The pandemic has taught us that viruses are not easy to identify – and can spread like wildfireAs we move into the late stages of the pandemic, it is important to reflect on the scientific discoveries of the past two years, so that we are better prepared for future virus outbreaks. I believe there are two areas in particular where we can learn from the experience. The first is understanding that outbreaks are not always easy to identify quickly. Viruses such as Nipah and Ebola cause severe, and therefore obvious, illness in everyone who is infected. The fatality rate is high but transmissibility is low, with an R number â...

Moderna Is Sharing Its Vaccine Technology With Low-Income Countries. But That Doesn ’t Mean Locally Produced Shots Are Coming Soon
Moderna, the Massachusetts-based company behind one of the two mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, made the decision in 2020 not to enforce the patent on its shot. The move was meant to encourage low- and middle-income countries that couldn’t afford to purchase billions of doses of the vaccine (as the U.S., Canada, and many European countries had done) to develop their own versions of the shot using less expensive resources. On Mar. 8, Moderna went a step further, saying that it will now extend that promise indefinitely in the 92 low- and middle-income countries that are receiving doses from COVAX, the global vaccine distributio...

How the hunt for this deadly virus shaped the search for coronavirus’s origins
Scientists quickly identified the deadly Nipah virus, tracing it to fruit bats. The detective story is taking on new relevance as scientists hunt for the origins of coronavirus and as zoonotic spillover is happening with increasing frequency, heightening the possibility of more pandemics in the future.
