Maternal Mortality: A National Institutes of Health Pathways to Prevention Panel Report
Obstet Gynecol. 2023 Dec 21. doi: 10.1097/AOG.0000000000005488. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe National Institutes of Health's (NIH) Pathways to Prevention panel on postpartum health provides a consensus statement on the evidence, research gaps, and future priorities to prevent maternal morbidity and mortality. The panel reviewed an NIH-commissioned evidence review and workshop that included epidemiologic studies, demonstration interventions, and other maternal morbidity and mortality research to create these national recommendations. The panel concludes that a maternal morbidity and mortality crisis reflects a systemic...

On May 25, 2023, the Food and Drug Administration approved nirmatrelvir/ritonavir for treatment of adults at high risk for severe disease. Although antiviral therapies are widely available, they are under...

Developing research programs that align with the clinical mission
Building a competitive research program within a department of surgery requires a significant commitment by the department and the institution to provide the necessary resources for faculty recruitment, retention of current faculty, and physical space/infrastructure to support research activities. We expanded the academic footprint of our department as demonstrated by the expansion of the department of surgery research funding by 13-fold over a period of 7 years, resulting in an increase in national ranking from 55th place to 10th place in the National Institutes of Health extramural funding. Depression in patients with Raynaud ’s phenomenon: A case-control study in the National Institutes of Health's All of Us Research Program
To the Editor: Raynaud ’s phenomenon (RP) is a clinical condition characterized by exaggerated vasospasm, triphasic color change, and in severe cases, ulceration and necrosis of the digits. With an estimated prevalence of 1.6% to 7.2%, RP can occur as an isolated phenomenon (“primary RP”) or in the setting of autoim mune connective tissue disease (most commonly systemic sclerosis [SSc], systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE], or Sjogren’s syndrome [SS]) as so-called “secondary RP.”1 While prior literature has suggested that patients with RP experience increased psychological distress and poorer overall mental healt...

The pivotal role of timing of intravenous thrombolysis bridging treatment prior to endovascular thrombectomy
In this study, we found OTD times to have a significant effect on the impact of IVT bridging treatment. Our study shows that among patients with OTD < 2 h bridging treatment may be associated with higher rates of successful recanalization. By contrast, in patients with OTD > 2 h, bridging treatment was associated with worse outcomes. Further time-sensitive randomized trials are needed.PMID:38107442 | PMC:PMC10725133 | DOI:10.1177/17562864231216637 (Source: Adv Data)

Biomarkers have to make sense
In this issue of Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, Kraus and co-workers report that no more than eight serum protein markers are required to separate, on group levels, persons with radiographic knee osteoarthritis (OA) from those free of radiographic OA (non-OA) in hands, hips, knees and spine. Sera from the knee OA cohort Foundation National Institutes of Health (FNIH; n = 596, Kellgren-Lawrence [KL] grade 1-3) were compared with sera from the non-OA multi-joint control cohort Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project (JoCoOA; n = 127, KL = 0). NIH advisory group recommends $14,000 boost in postdoc pay
The minimum starting salaries of U.S. biomedical postdocs should increase to $70,000, up from the current minimum of $56,484, concludes a report released today by an advisory group to the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). “We feel that this is crucial to … protect the U.S. biomedical competitiveness,” said co-chair Shelley Berger, an epigenetics professor at the University of Pennsylvania, during the presentation unveiling the report’s recommendations. If enacted, such a salary boost could impact researchers well beyond the biomedical research community, as many academic institutions across the country set ...

Mechanical thrombectomy for AIS from large vessel occlusion - current trends and future perspectives
Ann Med Surg (Lond). 2023 Oct 4;85(12):6021-6028. doi: 10.1097/MS9.0000000000001385. eCollection 2023 Dec.ABSTRACTStroke is found to be one of the global top causes of mortality and the major factor in years of life with a handicap (DALYs). Ischemic strokes contributed to nearly 70% of all strokes worldwide. For endovascular thrombectomy in acute ischemic stroke with large vessel obstruction (AIS-LVO), using stent retrievers and/or reperfusion catheters has become the gold standard of therapy. The methodology involved keyword-based search in databases like PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar for recent publications on mecha...

Gender distribution and NIH funding rank in dermatology leadership: a cross-sectional analysis
AbstractIn examining the influence of National Institute of Health (NIH) funding on gender distribution within dermatology leadership roles, a cross-sectional analysis of Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited dermatology residencies was conducted. The gender of leadership faculty was verified using online resources, while institutions were categorized by their 2022 NIH dermatology funding status. Results revealed that male dermatologists predominantly occupied department chair roles, whereas female dermatologists were more frequently found in associate program director roles, regardless of...
